  • Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

I will run small FTTs again shortly - How do I make sure that all cores have high values before I start the test? Do I need to make the system do something demanding as I click start?
    PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.
The four HWiNFO Core Clock current values don't need to be at the highest speed, just reasonably high.
You might find that moving your mouse pointer back and forth several times over several icons is enough to get all four core clocks reasonably high.
If you start LinX or IBT and only two of the core clocks are at full throttle, a 50 GFlop normal score will probably only give you a 37 GFlop score.

One confusing HWiNFO section is the Core Usage section which will report 100% usage for each core even when only two cores are working at maximum capacity. Take a look at my chart with the red and blue boxes and you'll see that it reports 100% usage for all four cores, even though two of you cores only completed 60% of the number of FFT tests that the two higher performing cores completed.

Your current Large FFT test screen-shot looks fine where all four cores are maxed out.

Increasing cpu vcore one step to 1.39375 might help.

On an unrelated subject, you've done a superlative overclocking job with your Sys_Fan1 fan speeds; over 16,000 rpm is truly outstanding!!

          I'll run Large FTTs next.

As for the fan speed - I noticed that when I connected it to Sys_Fan 1 but didn't think it was something I could fix haha!

If there are any issues with the Large FFT test, set tRFC = 60 and retest.

My concern is the much higher core temperature for you first core, it's very close to 80o(C) and throttling.

FWIW my HWiNFO window reports fan speed for "System2" and ~ 1550 rpm, yours reports 16,000 rpm for System1.
It is the 4-pin System fan header that provides much slower fan speeds even with a 3-pin fan connection.

Do I need to run small FTTs again?

I'll try running my Noctua case fan connected to PWR_FAN to see if that makes a difference also...

I'd have to say yes even though changing tRFC to use a higher (i.e. looser) setting should not affect Small FFT test results.

If you haven't guessed by now, I'm a real stickler when it comes to stress testing.

There is nothing magical about my choice of running each Prime95 stress test for 8 hours, it's just a reasonable compromise to running each test for 24 hours as we used to do 3 - 4 years ago. Back then I had very few Prime95 errors after 8 hours. With my current stress testing, I've had several Prime95 errors around the 4 hour mark.

This information applies to LGA775 overclocking, as I haven't been involved with overclocking newer systems.

In the past it was reported that 400MHz FSB stability was sometimes difficult.
Set Cpu Host Frequency = 402MHz.

DRAM Performance Enhance = Turbo at 3.80GHz might cause some memory timings to be too tight.
Set Performance Enhance = Standard and repeat the Prime95 Large FFT test.

Keep in mind that my 3.82GHz and 4.00GHz settings have not been fully tested for stability.

The middle MemSet window's memory speed is
                      1080MHz

I've just set DRAM Performance Enhance = Standard and MemSet shows timings of 5-7-7-7-22 for A and B channels - Do I want to manually set these in the BIOS to 5-5-5-5-15 or 5-5-5-5-18 before I test Large FTTs again?

                          Yes, manually set:
                          • primary memory timings to 5-5-5-15 or 18
                          • tRD = 9 for each memory channel
                          • DRAM Voltage somewhat lower; 2.00 -2.04

It might speed things up by running a brief LinX test before you start your Prime95 tests; 5 LinX loops using 1024 or 2048MB of memory.
It might save time in the long run if you run three 30 - 60 minute Prime95 stress tests before you start your 8 hour Prime95 stress tests.

With my current 4.165GHz testing, voltages that are a little too high are causing errors when running LinX as my preliminary quickie stress test.

When I boot my system, I wait 12 - 15 minutes at the windows desktop for my system to "settle down" where the Task Manager threads and processes show my normal values.

It's running now but I didn't reduce the DRAM voltage... I've been following your advice of waiting 15 minutes to let the system settle down and also leaving it turned off for 15 minutes after testing to cool down - I don't know if this is necessary but it can't hurt...

It's 1.5 hours through Large FTTs atm, if it fails, I'll reduce the DRAM voltage and try a LinX test then re-test with Large FTTs, small FTTs then blend - assuming it passes! (Seems like it's gotten used to failing lol)

                              Gonna' try small FTTs overnight.
