  • Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD5H / Core i7-4770K - No Power

    Hello Community,
I decided to upgrade my rig (1st gen i7 and X58 motherboard) and I purchased a new motherboard and processor this weekend and for the life of me I can't get it to power on at all, not even the tower lights and fans. I have run through all the usual items to try to determine why that is happening and I have hit a wall.

    Setup:
    Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD5H motherboard
    Intel Core i7-4770K processor
Corsair HX 850 - 850W PSU (only one month old and works perfect with old motherboard/cpu)
    Patriot G Series DDR3 1333 memory 4 x 4GB DIMMs (also tried Corsair MSX3 DDR3 1333 memory)
EVGA GeForce GTX 670 2GB graphics card

I'm not sure what to do at this point.
    - When I plug in my old mother board/CPU, it powers up and boots up no problem, so I know the power supply is not dead.
    - The power supply was plugged in and switched on.
    - When I hook up the new motherboard/CPU I get no lights on the motherboard and nothing powers on at all. I tried using the power button on the motherboard and on the tower with no luck.
    - I have verified that there are no bent pins on the socket and attempts to reseat the CPU did not help.
    - The CPU fan is plugged into the CPU_FAN header.
    - The 24 pin and 8 pin power chords are plugged into the motherboard.
    - I have tried with 1 DIMM and all 4 DIMMs with no success.
    - The new motherboard has an onboard graphics processor so I have also tried using just that without installing my GTX 670 card, neither way works.
    - I don't believe there is a short anywhere that I can tell as the old motherboard is the exact same size and it works perfectly.
    - I even returned the motherboard to Micro Center yesterday thinking maybe I had a DOA board out of the box, but the new one does the exact same thing. I would be hard pressed to believe that 2 high end mobos would be DOA like that. This is leading me to believe something else is going on.
    - I removed the CMOS battery and replaced it to try resetting CMOS settings but that did not help.
    - I confirmed on both manufacturer websites that the motherboard and CPU are compatible and see many posts of folks with that exact setup.
    - The motherboard and CPU both say they support 1333 mhz memory so I don't believe that is an issue, especially since that same memory works on my other motherboard.

I'm banging my head on the desk here trying to figure out what else I can do. Trolling the web doesn't seem to be helping. I see many posts with these gigabyte boards and booting issues but they are at least getting power and can get into BIOS, which i'm not even getting that far. Any insight or feedback would be much appreciated!!

Seems like you might have a short....have you removed the motherboard from the case, and tried just laying it on a piece of cardboard/the mobo box, plugging everything in and trying it?
(btw, you don't have to have a fan plugged into the cpu fan header for the board to work)

I have not tried it outside the case, though that sounds like a good way to test for a short. I just ruled that out because it was the same size as the board it was replacing and when I threw the old back in it worked with no issue. I will give that a shot tonight and see if it works.

I mentioned the CPU fan being plugged in because I have read that some motherboards will not allow the system to power up if the fan is not plugged in as a mechanism to protect the CPU from overheating. I thought it would save someone from mentioning that as a possibility ;)

Sure. But if you're air cooling probably should plug it in anyway, + it's an obvious sign that its working/not working.

If the board is just stone dead, and with 2 boards in a row doing the same thing it's a little bit strange......you said your other board works so obviously your psu is OK.

Another thing....double check that everything is plugged in correctly to front panel header (switch/reset/etc)

well I took the board out and laid it on the box and hooked up power cables and nothing. I have checked the front panel connectors and they are correct but even the onboard power button on the board does nothing. still no lights on the board or fans/lights on my case.

I'd take this one back too and tell them to show you they can make it fire up. MIght be a customer return??

Very strange that the power button on the board won't light up....makes me think for some crazy reason the psu wiring even though you said it works with another board.......IDK.

Isn't this board designed to fire up using the onboard "Quick' buttons, without the need of any wiring connected to the System Panel Header?

If so, I'd try that too.

                  Re: Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD5H / Core i7-4770K - No Power

Disconnect the front panel's power on/off switch and the reset switch wires.
Disconnect the front panel usb 3.0 wire that connects to the motherboard.
A problem with any of these wires might be the cause of your problem.

Make sure that the power supply's on/off rocker switch is working and in the on position.

I have an EP45-UD3P that refuses to power up even with a minimal hardware setup and the motherboard is outside of the case.
With the 8-pin and 24-pin cables connected to the motherboard, everything lights up on the board when I carefully jumper the light green "power good" (aka power on) wire with a black ground wire on the 24-pin connector.

Are either of the memory kits listed in the Gigabyte, Corsair or Patriot support lists for your motherboard?
Did you try booting with only one memory module installed in each of the four memory slots?

See http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...tml#post441685, post 29 for more information.
Obviously I had to jumper these two wires from the top of the connecter when it was plugged into the motherboard.

Yes, it will (should) fire up without anything connected to the FP header.

No matter which RAM he's got the board should power up.....But he's not even getting the onboard power switch to light up. Just flipping the psu on should light up the onboard power switch.

I'm still thinking wiring or marginal psu. Maybe he'll return some day and tell us, lol.

I guess I was implying that what I was seeing here was the constant in his posts above(and with 2 boards no less!) was his wiring up/to the FP panel. Thinking great time to have one of those wires become open or shorted, when you're swapping a MB to give you a headache.

I know....the front panel seems a likely candidate. I know he said his old board works, but that doesn't mean a wire isn't getting swapped somewhere.
                        Two different boards......ouch!

beg/steal/borrow another psu to test with (one that's haswell rated)

even if it works fine on your old board there's no guarantee it will work fine on the new z87 board, esp with the new c7 low power state, some power supplies simply cant provide the low power at idle
