  • GA-Z77X-UD5H bios boot failure only overnight

    system is stable can run for days + gaming + whatnot;
    new quality PSU as fixing attempt;
    tried tons of settings in bios: oc off, more ram voltage, etc. etc.
    tried switching off psu overnight;
    rebooting never fails, booting after only a couple hours never fails either;
    only after about 6 hours+ i get those bios resets first time starting - i hate it;

    any ideas?

    Re: GA-Z77X-UD5H bios boot failure only overnight

    Welcome to the club. I've been plagued with this problem since first using this board. Mine doesn't happen every time I cold start. It seems to come and go. I may not see it for a week and then it will happen every day for a few days. I continue to try different things, it goes away, I think I cured it and it cmes back. PITA.
    I've tried every BIOS version including betas, since F4 which came on the board. I thought it was a USB issue and spent countless hours messing with that. I've also spent many hours on the internet looking for ideas and trying anything that was suggested. Nothing fixes it.
    Sorry I'm not helping you, but thought you would like to know you're not alone. Perhaps someone will post something here that will help us both.

      tried with latest final unmodded bios?

      found issues with all beta's regarding saving and applying bios settings,could be linked to that,no issues at all with final bios's

        I tried the latest F14 final, same thing. I've had no applying or saving problems with the beta's. My only issue with this board has been this cold boot issue.

          Re: GA-Z77X-UD5H bios boot failure only overnight

          cold boot issues are usually memory or cpu imc setting/voltage related

          maybe try one or two clicks more dram v and cpu/vtt voltage

          could also be down to running a sb chip on z77 board,i can leave this pc unplugged or days and boot it up straight away

          EDIT: looking at the ops amount of ram I would look at ram settings tbh

            Re: GA-Z77X-UD5H bios boot failure only overnight

            It could be voltage, but I'm almost certain I have have increased both dram v and cpu v in my past attempts trying to remedy this. I'll give it a go the next time it fails to properly boot.
            It's interesting that the OP and I have nearly the identical problem, but the only common factor is the motherboard itself. Our specs are very different. It could be that both of our motherboards have the same defect. I'd RMA this board if it wasn't such a PITA and the fact that it does run very good once it boots.

              Re: GA-Z77X-UD5H bios boot failure only overnight

              Thanks for the replies guys, i'll follow the RAM angle next time, current test topic is running off the iGPU.

              Having fully outfitted ram was the reason i went down the road of beta and modded bioses in the first place.. and random crashes after sleep (which seem to be fixed by shutting down aida64 first).
              I need the ram for VMs, so stepping down to 16gb is not really a pleasing thought.

              I've also tried unmodded F16 without success.

              Testing in 6hr+ intervals is so... efficient..

                Re: GA-Z77X-UD5H bios boot failure only overnight

                max safe cpu/vtt voltage is 1.2v so you can test anywhere from stock 1.05v upwards

                dram voltage can be 1.5v-1.65v

                  Re: GA-Z77X-UD5H bios boot failure only overnight

                  I wish I could offer some help other than suggest further RAM tweaking. Both my Z77x UD5H boards run very smoothly for quite a while-although my wife's is starting to get that annoying "surge on USB" message popping up again.
                  As for repairs.....both my Z77x UD5H boards have been to Gigabyte for repairs, although unrelated to your problems. Turnaround time delivered back to me was 11-14 days once Gigabyte had the boards so it's something to keep in mind.

                  I hope you guys get it straightened out, as I think that when running right, the UD5H series are great boards.

                    What about the deal with IMC having to be within 0.005v of VTT? Found this information in several ivybridge oc guides.
                    By default they're like 0.060 apart.

                    boondocks: may i ask what kind of repairs.. i mean you don't really repair motherboards, do you?

                      No, of course not, I said both boards had been to Gigabyte for repairs.
                      One board had bent cpu socket pins when I bought it, and the other board developed a problem with the first (x16) Pcie slot where it wouldn't recognize a Gen 3 AMD card.

                        My board booted up fine this morning. I shut it down and went out for about 4 hours, on return it went through the cold boot routine. Turn on; black screen, shutdown, restart POST screen then blank BIOS screen, shutdown, restart; black screen, shutdown, restart normally. I went into BIOS an bumped up a couple of notches the dram v, vtt and vcore. We'll see if that helps tomorrow.

                          Kinda afraid that spelling it out summons the evil spirits of bootfailure.. So far i had 4 successful mornings after raising VTT by 0.010 and IMC by 0.050 (i chose those values intuitively, not ready yet to find the lowest working). Before i had those settings on 'normal' instead of 'auto' since this boards stacks a lot of extra voltage when you leave it on auto. Also i still have turned off ErP, again i'm turning it on when it's been working for longer - without erp the off power draw is a very outdated 5.5W (here in europe that's not very acceptable).

                          edit: now lowering IMC again. +0.050 is not necessary. stepping down atm: currently at +0.025 and running fine
                          (my LLC settings are "balanced" on cpu and "normal" on all the rest)

                              Think it's time to thank you wazza300!
                              So far i'm on 6:0 successful mornings, looks like upping vtt/imc solves the boot trouble with 32GB ram.
                              Erp was back on too this morning.

                              Edit: Nearing 2 weeks now (although it seems irrelevant: with ErP enabled) without cold boot resets.. think i can consider this problem solved.
