  • Maximum Fan Amps/Watts?

Does anybody know if it is safe to put 6 Sythe Gentle Typhoons on one Fan header on G1.Sniper 5, apparently rated 0.083A each, so 0.498A for 6 at 12v each so roughly 3W max. Cannot find anything in the manual :)

Gigabyte will tell you not to put more than one fan per header, but usually Gigabyte fan headers are rated at 1A.

I wouldn't be afraid to put 6 AP-15's wired correctly on a single header. Remember to pick up the rpm signal from only one fan in the group.

GT AP-15's do take 0.36A at start up, if you are ok with short 2 A bursts on a 1 A header then go ahead.

Yes, start up current is something to think about.
I haven't seen that kind of draw with my AP-15's but it's possible.

That number comes from Nidec Servo specifications, it would be interesting to know how long that start up burst is

Good info to know. That being the case, I definitely would NOT run 6 AP-15's on one fan header.

Currently I use 2x Aquaero 5 Pro's for fan & pump control and up to 8x AP-15's per channel. The Aquaero's are only rated at 1.65A per channel but I've never blown a channel from overload yet.
But with the motherboard headers I would be more careful.

              Re: Maximum Fan Amps/Watts?

Yeah it certainly worries me, but I have heard that Gigabyte boards support up to 3A per header Max, so 2A bursts for start up should be okay. But I think I might put a support ticket in to find out for definite with this board, wish they could just put the specs for the fan headers on the website or manual.

The Problem I have is that my Corsair Link is well rubbish :P I am fed up with it and the Gigabyte Easy Tune software is much much better and easier to use for the fans I am currently using, I want to run the fans on my radiators using the CPU temperature but they are 3 pin so they will not run off the CPU header, only the CPU OPT header and not the System Fans headers because they use the System Temperature not the CPU Temperature to adjust the speed :(

I have 5 Fans on my Radiator and 1 Case fan, all the Scythe Gentle Typhoon AP-15 and one little 40mm fan which can happily run at Max 3200RPM and is still silent (I replaced the one that came with the board as it was constantly stopping). I want it to be silent when not doing much other than watching movies and ramp up when gaming, the Gigabyte software works perfectly for the one AP-15 Case Fan, the Corsair Cooling Link Node fails miserably which ever profile or customised fan curve I use :P

                Re: Maximum Fan Amps/Watts?

Yes, ask Gigabyte for your board specifically. The most recent board I asked Gigabyte about was the Z77X UD5H (I've asked them about other boards in the past) and once again they told me 1A, so that is usually what I go by.
But in light of what mm67 said about the start up draw of AP-15's I would hesitate to put more than 4 fans per header unless I knew for sure the header could handle it.

I have sent them a ticket, will see what they say :)

Pity one cannot change a System Fan to be a CPU OPT fan in software or with a switch on the board, would be no need to worry then :)

Meh, the quote I got was -

                    Dear Sir,

The max current is 1A for each fan header.
I guess it is not worth risking.

I figured they would tell you 1A. That's what they told me for Z68 & Z77, I haven't bothered to ask them about Z87 but suspected it was the same.
But I use an Aquaero 5 for fan control, in fact I haven't used any motherboard fan headers in quite a while.

The new Aquaero 6 is coming out in October, it will be able to handle 20 fans per channel, supposedly, 3 pin or pwm.
