Re: X58A-UD3R - Bent Cpu Pins?

I moved your post to its own thread in the Gigabyte forum.

You should see the Post New Thread button near the upper right portion of the Gigabyte forum web page.
Can you post a high resolution photo of the cpu socket?
You need to provide even illumination and do not use the camera's flash.

Sometimes the pin height might be too low and you would need to inspect the socket from all sides where your eyes or the camera are very close to the surface of the motherboard as if you were looking across the socket from a side view.

Attached is an example of a cpu socket with 3 bent pins.

Re: X58A-UD3R - Bent Cpu Pins?

thanks to profJim for moveing my post to its right location, Hi wazza, long time since my last problem, yes the socket on my x58a ud3r seams to have just 1 pin bent on the second row in and about 5 pins down, sorry cant seam to get a good clear picture of it, the pin cought my eye last time I was cleaning the cpu for new tim, I niticed tht it just didn't look right I have an eye glass 10x and it took a while and looking at it from all directions it seams to look a little bent to one side, for example if you were to get a pair of tweezers and grab 1 pin and just tern it a little clock wise, not only that but never really knew how intel socket pins looked entil now, they kinda look like a "HOOK" and I think the hook part might be like a little squashed out of its right shape, the pin is not bent in half like a lot iv seen on youtube and therefore can break so I am hopeing this can be fixed, any ideas would be great, today I have been in town and bought just about every kind and shape of tweezers I could find, the problem as far as I can tell is if I enable XMP in bios the system just will not boot into any O/S I say any as I did have windows 8 pro but after having some problems I decsided to try going back to win 7 so im thinking the pin isn't making the correct contact with the cpu and the memory controller is being affected

forgot to say, the system is working up and running with windows 7 ultimate 64bit and runs well though it will run intel burn no problem while at stock if I try anything like a game or and 3d benchmarks it will simply either turn the system right off or crash

Re: X58A-UD3R - Bent Cpu Pins?

if its just one pin you can straighten it,it doesn't matter about the hook/tip being out of shape aslong as the pin itself is roughly in the right place as in aligned with the surrounding pins

the best tool for the job is a fine sewing needle imo, that and a magnifying glass, carefully pull the pin back into shape once its straight then leave it as constant fiddling will fatigue the pin and it will snap off, then your screwed

you can also gently lift up the pin so it makes good contact when the cpu is placed ontop

ok im back after a lot of re boots, im back to an old problem again now with the x58 not recognizing all the ram and cant remember how I fixed that last time, anyway iv bent the pin back into place now its the same height and in line with the others around it, I did notice another slightly bent pin and sorted that 1 too but im afraid now with the missing ram I cant even test to see if the pin problem is solved lmfao "bloody computers"

Re: X58A-UD3R - Bent Cpu Pins?

                  How much ram is "missing"?
I hate to say it, but bent cpu socket pins can cause a loss of memory.
Wazza can provide additional information based on his X58 experience.

Do a web search using: x58a missing memory and see if any of the links provide some useful information.

Re: X58A-UD3R - Bent Cpu Pins?

While Prof Jim is correct about the CPU socket pins causing memory problems, the X58 platform is infamous for its missing memory issue. I've seen that myself on my ASUS X58 board. You should find all kinds of forum posts and even guides about it, it was one of the most common problems with X58 boards.

In my case, adjusting the "IOH" voltage fixed the missing memory. No idea what it is called on your board, but it is not the "ICH" voltage. The settings ranged from 1.10V to 1.70V, and more is not necessarily better, reducing mine a bit worked for me.

That is not the only fix for this issue, but one of the common ones.

look in the bios in system info page and see how much ram is listed, then look in windows control panel/system and security/system and see how much ram is show there

it can be bent pins/overtightened cpu cooler/not enough qpi/vtt voltage or a blown capacitor,as ive had a board repaired in the past for the same issue and it was a blown cap

im guessing at voltage/bent pin ot too tight a cpu cooler

hi guys thanks for the replies, yep seen hundreds of things around Google about the x58 loosing ram lol I had t before and yep it was to do with bios settings if I remember its something to do with x58 liking manual ram settings rather than XMP

well today I was just about ready to swap my x58a ud3r for my spare p55 ud6, yes a huge downgrade but thought to hell with it I'll have another go and lift the 2 pins that were ben a little higher and hay presto I now have 12gb back, WAZZA I hope you remember back along last year you helped me a lot and finally got a good stable o/c with using the DVID on here well today I found that F8b bios and a saved profile I had for it that was called wazza 4.0 all good" lol and that's been on here all day running prime95, I will keep testing as I haven't had time today really for anything on here with grand kids staying over tonight lol should be fun but tomorrow I'll do some serious testing and post back results..

thanks to everyone helping and for all the advice

well done on fixing the pins

it pays to leave the cpu clamped down and not mess with it unless splitting the board for selling ect,i never touch mine, even on a rare repasting I leave it clamped into the board, that way you wont disturb anything

keep tweaking with the oc and post back if you need anymore help
