Re: Gigabyte X58-UD3R Rev 2 list of problems

So do I need to be concerned about using the single rail? Or is it just something that when it goes wrong it goes wrong more awesomely?

Re: Gigabyte X58-UD3R Rev 2 list of problems

As parsec said, you need to know how to balance the loads with a multi-12 volt rail setup to ensure that you don't accidentally overload one of the rails. The better psu review sites can usually report on which psu cables are connected to each 12 volt rail. My psu must have an individual pci-e 6- or 8-pin cable for each pci-e connector, and not one where two of the video card connectors are part of one cable. Short Circuit protection is a must have feature and the psu review must report whether this feature works or not.

My bottom line: buy a high quality single rail psu but don't connect too many peripherals to any psu cable.
Seasonic (or made by Seasonic) power supplies are best.
SuperFlower makes some excellent power supplies for other name brand vendors.

PSU Review Database - RealHardTechX is an excellent site for quickly finding out who makes each psu model and includes links to many of the better psu review sites that have reviewed certain models.

      **edit**
If you find a high quality, highly rated multi-rail psu, don't be afraid to buy it if its OCP limits for each 12 volt rail are least 20 - 30% higher than the rating on the psu rail chart.

Re: Gigabyte X58-UD3R Rev 2 list of problems

Alright thanks, I will definitely keep that in mind about the peripherals.

Most of the reviews I have read did not really talk too much about the protection, but the ones that did said it worked.

          Well Gentlemen,

I got the new PSU installed and everything appears to be running fine. I am going to run a few more tests this weekend, but everything looks promising.

Thank you for your helpful insight.

Glad to hear that your new power supply is working well so far.
Did you go with the 1KW Seasonic Platinum psu?
Where do we send our individual consulting bills?

BTW rclark never paid his bill because my dog ate his invoice before I could send it.

Re: Gigabyte X58-UD3R Rev 2 list of problems

I got the sea Sonic 1kW. I am going to try all 6 slots of RAM when I get home tomorrow.

You will have to wait to send me any invoices profJim, I still have to do some testing and I had to sell my mailbox to afford the PSU.

                    Thanks for the kind words.
It was a real pleasure working with you with your power supply problem.
My only gripe is that you never showed up for the seven part UPS test to see how much you learned from reading the 14 page UPS article that I linked to in your thread. The funniest part was when you were so happy with your new power supply that you badly misspelled your name in a post.
I'm impressed with how well Corsair treated you when you RMA'd your defective power supply.
I've never heard anything positive about Seasonic's RMA process.

                      Hey Professor,
Hmmm, in regards to that whole exam on UPS, I thought you let me skip through due to my first part of the exam---see below link ( go down to post 8 and 9 )

Man--I don't forget stuff like this--- my head was hurting for weeks trying to learn this---ha !!!!
It was funny where I had spelled my name wrong---I was a bit giddy riding that, "every thing works" ( euphoria ! )
You know, it is funny, a few days after everything settled down and the pc was running great, I thought to myself, " Man, does this mean I won't get to bother and chat with you all ?? " I think I heard a faint violin in the far distance playing something in a E flat minor chord as this thought passed, small tear in left eye.
I think I may try writing now--- ha !!!!
                      take care Professor !!!! --rclark--
