Problem with UD5H & new gpu

So I just got a new HD7950 for my backup rig, which is running a Z77 UD5H. (Ignore the signature as I haven't made all the changes yet)

Put a 6850 in top slot, works fine. In fact I've been running x2 Crossfire.

Put the 7950 in top slot, nada.

Put the 7950 in the x8 slot and it works!

This has me puzzled.

Ideas?

If your HD7950 has a bios switch, try the other setting.
From what I've seen in the ASRock forum, an updated motherboard bios might be needed.
Have you tested with either of your other HD7950 video cards?

The bios is up to date, and the latest drivers installed. Didn't think about the bios switch but don't think that would make a difference.....but I'll give it a try in a bit.

No luck. Works fine in the second x8 slot but absolutely no video in top slot. I don't get it since I can pop one of the 6850's in there an it works fine. :shrug:
Ah well I'll be swapping my other board in with the delidded cpu pretty soon anyway and I know it works. I just hope there's no problem with the gpu running in x16 3.0 slot? I'll pop it in the other board when it gets here and test.

You find any of that interesting ? Are you missing components also ?
Can you "downgrade" pci3 to 2 in Bioos until you put crossfire as thats 8 +8 I assume.

That my card might be missing components? Well it's interesting, but not likely. It's a PowerColor AX7950 3GBD5-2DHV4 bought directly from Newegg. It has a reference design so not likely to be missing anything.

I had F15r and no luck, went back to F14 and same. I don't think it's anything in BIOS, but of course I don't know for sure.
Really don't understand why the card would not work at all in x16 slot, yet I can stick in an older one and it works.
I have 2 other 7950's I could test with but they both have water blocks on them. I'll try to get one hooked up today if I can. (big storm coming up the Gulf today-got to batten down the hatches)

OK I have new 7950 working in top slot, BUT there must also be a card in the second slot!
In the meantime I loaded the latest beta bios.

Even resetting cmos, the only way to get video out of the (hdmi) 7950 while in the top slot is to have another card (in this case a 6850) in the second slot.

Ideas?

Don't use the HDMI output?
Look carefully through the mobo bios for a setting that might clear up this mess?

Pretty much my whole pc area is set up for HDMI, I don't even have a dvi to hdmi cable I think.
I know the bios inside and out when it comes to video settings so I don't know what else to do there.
The good news is that this particular board is going to be moved to another machine along with a pair of 6850's so that solves the problem by avoiding it.

I'm not going to stress about it, but still it ticks me off that I can't figure this out. I think it's something to do with the board hardware/firmware not switching.

Careful! This method not recommended nor sanctioned for novice slackers!

Do I want to solve it? Sure. I don't know what else I can do at this time. The board will be replaced with my other UD5H that has the delidded cpu soon. Now if the top slot doesn't work on THAT board then I will be seriously pissed....but it's been working fine with a pair of 7950's so hopefully it will be OK with a single one.

Now that u popped it off , did you have all capacitors near the connector ? Seems to affect the cheap ones with reference cooling.


If you use the second slot , then the first one is in 8x. Is there BiOS fix for that card?
