  • Doing my first build ever, Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H won't start up on the test boot.

When I turn on my PSU, the orange light on the motherboard Power button turns on, once I press that button, the fans on the psu, gpu and cooler will twitch slightly and then everything stops, but the light on the mobo stays on. Also, if I press the power up button again, nothing happens, for the fans to twitch again, I'd have to turn off the psu then turn it back on and press the power button on the motherboard again.
    This is my build
    • Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H
    • Intel i5 3570k
    • Cooler Master Hyper 212 plus
    • EVGA Geforce gtx 670 FTW 2gb
    • 650W Supernova EVGA PSU
    • Corsair vengeance 2x8gb DDR-3 1600

I really don't know what to do and I'm worried I may have short circuited something. It's my first ever build and I'm positive I've done everything correctly but I hope for my sake that I haven't, because at least I could re-do everything instead of having a short-circuited system. I have The 24 pin MB cable connected, and the CPU1 cable to the ATX_12V_2X4 slot on the motherboard.
What I then did was I removed everything and only left the cable between the motherboard and the PSU, the 24 pin MB cable, I switched it on and the psu fan spun for a full 1.5 seconds. Much better than small twitch when everything else was connected.
    Can anyone help?

I've uploaded a video so you guys can see what's going on, maybe that'll help narrow down the problem.

does it do the same thing without the graphic card installed and using the motherboards graphics/hdmi/dvi/vga ports?

Yes, I've just tried doing that, unfortunately, same thing occurs, do you think this may be a problem?

well it doesn't look very healthy, should be flush with the board

if I were you I wouldn't go any further,id just show them that pic and request an rma/replacement,then take it from there

I know its a pain, but atleast youll get a working board back

I've already requested one, I'm going to ship it once I try another PSU tomorrow and narrow down the problem. but even it's not flush, it's still getting some power to the motherboard.

even if you get it working fine I wouldn't be able to sleep at night with it like that, those plastic blocks can melt pretty easily and catch fire,it might be perfectly fine but I wouldn't want to chance it

it lookslike a manufacturing defect to me,but by all means try with another psu, another thing to try is leave it switched on for a few minutes and see if it kicks into life

It is set flushwith board they are all like that. Wouldn't worry about it.
I have checked my motherboard and that is the same. If you look at the pictureclosely it is set flush. If you remove the serial number (which you shouldn'tremove it) you will see the gap underneath anyway.

Thanks for all the help guys, I went to my cousins place and used his power supply, everything worked fine, bios screen showed up, fans started spinning. Tried it with the graphics card on and 2 sticks of ram, everything worked.

So, conclusion: Power supply was bad, I had the EVGA Supernova 650W 80 Gold Plus, I'll be buying a new power supply and update you guys once again if it works.

that's good, sorry for the scare mongering about the 24pin socket, but seems to be the norm if others are like it,i cant see mine properly with it installed in my case

and yeah they are very choosy when it comes to power supplies,no issues with xfx psu's here

I'm going with a cooler master Silent pro M2 850w, mainly because I got someone giving it to me for a good price, and it's brand new whereas the EVGA power supply was not. Hopefully it'll work. I haven't seen any bad reviews on it and I've heard good stuff about the 1st generation Silent Pro M, so I'm assuming the newer version of it will do just as fine, if not better.

The only reason you won't be able to see the power supply plastic cover, is because sometimes they put the serial number sticker to far down and not in the centre.
If you see above the picture you will see there is no sticker, and you can see the actual gaps on the power supply connector, which is perfectly normal.

Well good luck on your first time build, you chose a good motherboard. I actually have two UD5H boards (until Haswell anyway) and I really like them.

If you choose to flash the bios I would go with either F14 final, or F15r beta. I would skip the F15q beta on Gigabyte's site.
Of course Stasio keeps links here for the latest beta bios, chipset drivers, etc making TT a one stop shop for any of the board's software.

Thanks! Someone recommended it to me as gigabytes customer service is excellent, and sorry but, what exactly is "Flashing" the bios, what does it do and why would I want to do it?

The boards BIOS might be periodically updated to provide for example, bug fixes, functionality or for compatibility issues.
As for what the BIOS is I suggest you google it or hit Wikipedia.
