I have 2 SSDs-Samsung 840-250GB and OCZ Vertex 3-250GB SSDs. Both have Trim support. Turbo Mode is disabled in BIOS.
I use them for Mac OSX 10.8.2 Mountain Lion This is a Hackintosh-OSX on a PC. Same results with LION.
The OCZ SSD is directly connected to one of the 2 GSATA ports on my GA-P55a-UD3-F11 Rev 2
The Samsung 840 SSD is connected to Highpoint Rocket 620 PCIe 2.0 SATA III 6Gb/s controller card.
The OCZ's disk throughput is about 2.5 times that of the Samsung SSD. I used Blackmagic to test. I confirmed the test using the drive test feature of Drive Genius.
The GSATA port connection is 2.5 times faster than a connection through either controller card.
Given the poor throughput usually associated with the GSATA ports on this motherboard, I think this throughput is opposite what's expected.
I have also gathered throughput data with another [other than Highpoint] PCIe controller card- SY-PEX 40039-Asmedia 1061 SATA Host Controller
Both PCIe controller cards are SATA 3 6Gbps.
I have swapped the 2 SSDs between the GSATA connection and the 2 controller PCIe card connections.
The throughput results are similar. The SSD connected to the GSATA port is 2.5 times faster than when connected to a PCIe card.
I mentioned the Turbo Mode status after reading how Gigabyte supports PCIe using CPU connection in 1 case and chipset in another. Could that be part of problem?
It's a problem with connecting to the motherboard using either of these cards.
ANY IDEAS OF THE CAUSE & SOLUTIONS ?
There are postings on the internet that show this strange finding does not happen with other motherboards-
Folks get good throughput with both these cards.[Most of that data is from Windows 7].
The controller cards were in the PCIex4 slot of the motherboard.
The only other card in the PCIe or PCI slots is a MSI R5770 video card in x16 [I tried swapping the 5770 video card with the controller cards -did not fix problem.
I have contacted the SSD vendors and the controller card vendors they have not been helpful.
