ok it seems these settings caused the machine to turn on and off twice then reset the settings back to default. Did not even boot up to gigabyte logo with these settings. what should i start changing?

Re: Overclock Q6600 on GA-EP45-UD3P + 8GB DDR2 800MHZ RAM

You misunderstood CDS Foley's post.
The bios template that he posted for you is for you to fill in your bios settings. Ignore the values that are in the bios template.
Did you have a saved bios profile saved in the bios before you tried the values from the bios template?
If yes, reload your old bios settings and copy these saved values into the bios template.
Then you should post your former bios settings so that we know what you were running.
We need detailed information about ALL OF THE HARDWARE in your system.

We can best help you after you create a detailed hardware list in the System Specs portion of your
forum profile http://forums.tweaktown.com/profile.php?do=editprofile at the bottom of the
profile page or in your forum signature http://forums.tweaktown.com/profile....=editsignature.
Be sure to include brand names and model numbers.

If you are using the stock Intel cpu cooler, you will only be able to overclock to 3.00GHz or slightly higher.

You might have to clear your CMOS and then boot into the bios to load Optimized bios defaults.
You might need to boot with only 4GB of memory temporarily.
Be sure that you unplug the psu power cable from the wall outlet or the back of the psu before you add or remove or replace any hardware.

Include a link to your memory model's specs from the manufacturer's web page.

I am leaving in about 15 minutes and I will be out for 4 hours and I'll check back when I get back.

Re: Overclock Q6600 on GA-EP45-UD3P + 8GB DDR2 800MHZ RAM

sorry i should have mentioned that many of those settings in the template i already had in a previous overclock, recommended by a moderator here by the name of lsdmeasap. the settings i have in that template are saved to my bios profiles. i made teh changes cds foley recommended against my original profile. after changing the bios settings, machine rebooted back to defaults on its own.

memory link is here Newegg.com - G.SKILL 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Quad Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5Q-8GBPQ

i am also running an antec 1000w psu Newegg.com - Antec TruePower Quattro TPQ-1000 1000W Continuous Power ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC "compatible with Core i7/Core i5" Power Supply

and an nvidia 8800 gtx.

my cpu cooler is this : Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus RR-B10-212P-G1 "Heatpipe Direct Contact" Long Life Sleeve 120mm CPU Cooler Compatible with Intel 1366/1155/775 and AMD FM1/FM2/AM3+

and im running vista x64. Soon to upgrade to W7 x64.

That is actually why i'm trying to overclock, so I can get some more performance out of my rig before i must shell out the cash for a new computer as I'm in video editing class at my film school. Basically, for those of you that understand the reference, I'm trying to make my computer do the Kaio-Ken and beast it up for a little longer. ;)

Lsdme is the master but he hasn't been in the forum for almost 10 months.
Post the bios template with the values that are currently set in your system.

You can use the forum's Advanced Search feature where you put Q660 EP45-UD3P in the keywords field and then select Search Titles Only.
You can look at some similar threads to get an idea of which settings will need to be changed.

Did you have a saved bios profile saved in the bios before you tried the values from the bios template?
If yes, reload your old bios settings and copy these saved values into the bios template.
Then you should post your former bios settings so that we know what you were running.

If you are using the stock Intel cpu cooler, you will only be able to overclock to 3.00GHz or slightly higher.
Yes I apologize for the confusion that template was only for you to fill out your bios setting, not to apply them.

Oh my... just a quick read of that, I looked to your 800MHz memory. I see it's alread overclocked to what looks like 840MHz which in my opine is probably as good as its going to get.

It is a PITA to have to scroll through your thread to find your hardware listl.

Using PC Specs will let us review hardware information in each of your posts.
Adding the information in your forum signature will not show the information in any of your earlier posts.

Have you done any stress testing with IntelBurn Test (IBT), LinX, or Prime95?
If yes, which tests have you run and for how long?
Were there any errors while running these tests? If yes, provide error detail information.

There are some inconsistencies in your posted bios settings.
• Is your memory speed 840 or 850MHz?
• PCI Express Frequency = [100] <--- don't use the auto setting
• Advanced Clock Control section are the actual settings = 800, 900, 50 and 150 as shown in your post?
• Standard Timing Control ---> change your settings to 6-6-6-18 for now.
• For 3600MHz cpu speeds, your Cpu Host Frequency will need to be increased later to 450MHz, where 8.0 x 450 = 3600MHz and this will mean that your memory will have to run at 900MHz, where 450 x 2.0 = 900MHz. Running memory at 900MHz will require looser/higher settings than you are currently using.

G.SKILL- [ P Q ] F2-6400CL5Q-8GBPQ (2Gx4) is the link to your memory's specs at the G.Skill web site.

Providing the following screen-shot will let us confirm some of the settings.

Include a screenshot that displays:
Memset using the SPD and ">>" tabs
cpu-z CPU and Mainboard screens (several instances can be run at the same time)
EasyTune6 --> TUNER tab --> ADVANCE tab --> VOLTAGE tab (only the Voltage tab is needed)
CoreTemp screen [for your cpu's VID (Voltage ID)]

Links for these programs are in the Latest Overclocking Programs, System Info, Benchmarking, & Stability Tools thread.

It's best for you to created the cropped screen-shot before you test with updated bios settings and then close EasyTune6 and Memset before you start a new test.

The attached image is a sample of what your screen-shot should look like.
Note: The poster did NOT press the >> Memset button, so the settings do not show the applied memory settings for memory channel B.
Keep the image width less than about 1024 pixels so the each window will be readable.

This is an example of what your posted bios settings should look like, where it is perfectly clear which settings are set to AUTO or if they have a manual setting, and you show the values to the left of the colon exactly as they appear in your bios.

Ignore the values in this sample post, and include accurate information.

Some bios settings might not appear in your bios.
Code:
CPU = Model #
Motherboard = Model, Revision #
BIOS Version =
Ram = Brand, Model#, Part#, And or Link  [B][U]http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=190[/U][/B]

note: replace all ?? with the value displayed in your bios.

With your suggestions, I have input the following settings. the computer powered on, but gave a winboot.exe error prior to windows startup. when i attempted to reboot from cd, the computer reset. instability somehow? what should i change on these settings for a stable 3.6 overclock? I could live with 3.5 if need be. I took a screenshot with all my optimized defaults but could not take one of the new settings since i could not boot.

Re: Overclock Q6600 on GA-EP45-UD3P + 8GB DDR2 800MHZ RAM

There is no sense trying for 3.60GHz until we know that your system is stable at your current 3.40GHz settings.
Prime95? IBT? LinX? Have you run any of these tests with stable 3.40GHz settings.
I recommend that you keep the 6-6-6-18 memory timings until you find your highest stable cpu speed.
You will waste a lot of time if you try to o/c the cpu and memory at the same time with optimal settings.
If Prime95 isn't stable for at least 4 - 8 hours at any cpu speed, your system isn't stable.
LinX or IBT (5 test loops only) are quick and dirty preliminary stress tests will fairly quickly tell you if your system is partially stable. If your system gets errors with IBT or LinX, there is no reason to run Prime95 for several hours.

Check out http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...-settings.html where I go into a lot of detail for stress testing and and bios settings. Right now your 3.40GHz settings don't look right and I need the requested screen-shot to confirm your settings and we need to know if your system is stable before we go higher. Some Q6600 systems have trouble getting stable at 3.40GHz, let alone going higher.

My old fashioned approach is what I've found works best. Lsdme, Kick, and others have their own approaches. I want to teach you and others the tools to be able to overclock. Others may be willing to spoon feed you ballpark settings that might or might not be stable. Right now your system might be near its limits or it might be able to go 3.60GHz or possibly a bit higher.

Right now I feel that you're trying to finish the roof while I'm making sure that the foundation is solid.
There really aren't any good shortcuts. Getting a solid high overclock is like running a long race.
FWIW, from what I've seen, overclocking Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge systems is much easier and simpler than with LGA775 systems.

master yoda, after making the memory timing changes you suggested to 6-6-6-6-18 and my own idea of increasing vcore to 1.4, the system booted. however, when i tried to run OCCT, the stress test program i use, windows crashed immediately. Here are my settings before i ran the test.Click image for larger version
