  • P55A UD3 - 16GB RAM Errors

    • I ran Memtest 86+ with the following:
      • 4DIMMS - get errors
      • Individually in slots 1 or 3 for between 1-7 hours - no errors
      • - curiously one module gave errors in slot 3, but when I ran it in slot 1 or slot 3 again it gave no errors (maybe this module is the problem and I just need to run it for longer?
      • Everytime I run all 16GB at once, the errors seem to appear when it is testing between 16000GB and 16384MB, I don't know if that is an indication of what's wrong?

For all those tests I was running the Motherboard with Optimized defaults in the BIOS. Previously on my 4GB RAM I had the computer using XMP and also had the speedstep and other CPU energy saving features on (no turbo boost) and that was solid. I have tried changing many different BIOS settings and nothing seems to make the 16GB stable.

The computer seems to run solid for like 3-6 days before crashing again. Clearing the CMOS allows me to turn it on successfully when I can't get it to POST sometimes.

I read that using all 4 slots means I need to increase the DRAM voltage above 1.5V. The Motherboard already runs it at 1.58V, so I tried 1.6 and 1.62V. I also tried increasing the QPI/VTT from the default 1.1V to 1.21V. None of these changes can make me get no errors with 16GB in Memtest. Currently I have manually set all the timings to match the 9-9-9-24 required by the RAM and have the following other settings:

    QPI/VTT Voltage..........1.100v.....[1.21V]
    DRAM Voltage..............1.500v.....[1.62V]

    CPU Clock Ratio 17x
    >>>>> Standard Clock Control <<<<<

    BCLK Frequency ..........................[160]
    Extreme Memory Profile (X.M.P.)..........[Disabled]
    System Memory Multiplier (SPD)...........[10]
    Memory Frequency (MHz)................1600 (non editable)
    PCI Express Frequency (MHz)..............[Auto]

    Advanced Memory Settings:

    Extreme Memory Profile (X.M.P.)..........[Disabled]
    System Memory Multiplier (SPD)...........[Auto]
    Memory Frequency (MHz)................1600 (non editable)
    Performance Enhance (SPD)............. [Standard]

What do you think I should do? I would rather not go back to my 4GB RAM, but I can't really live with an unstable system. Should I try and run that potentially faulty RAM stick for longer in Memtest and then if I get errors again, should I just return that stick? What other tests can I do, or is Memtest the best one? Do I need to increase the DRAM or QPI/VTT voltages more?

I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks!

you could need more qpi/vtt,im using 1.32v with just 8gb on a h55 board, try 1.32v and see if errors persist

I set the qpi/vtt to 1.31V (it only had odd numbers) and ran Memtest. It started giving errors again within 5 minutes. Any other ideas? I think I might try the one module which failed by itself again and see what that brings up.

          Re: P55A UD3 - 16GB RAM Errors

I've had that one module running in Memtest in slot 1 for 3 hours now. It has had 4 successful passes and almost finished a 5th. So it looks like that module is actually fine.
Any other ideas? I'm a bit stuck at this stage.

you still could need more dram/qpi/vtt with 16gb its alot for those cpu's/boards

maybe 1.35-1.38v qpi and 1.65v dram?

Ok cool I'll try upping the voltage on them. After the PC froze again last night I decided for now to put back in the old reliable RAM because I have an important report I need to write for next week and I can't be having crashes while I write. I'll try those voltages again next week and let you know.

              Thanks again!
