GA-EX58-UD5 - 2-Channel Ram

so i originally had a og Core i7 920 on a GA-EX58-UD3R on which the ethernet chip failed; well past guarantee tho

i ran it on a added-ethernet card till i could replace the board

got a used GA-EXG8-UD5

which was fine, the -UD5 has twin ethernets-out, untill i thought id get a i7 960

and other Ram .. Corsair Dominators 3x2GB [ok, i shoulda got 3x8GB, maxed it out]

cept it doesnt

neither my original 3x2GB OCZ nor the Corsairs will run Triple-channel with the i7 960

only Dual-Channel

you need to test each white ram slot one at a time using only one ram stick,it will boot into windows if its working

you need to fine which ram slot is faulty or whether its a ram stick,you cant test the blue slots unless all the slots are filled,its either not enough qpi/vtt or the cpu heatsink is too tight or you have bent cpu socket pin/pins

since this occurred with the OCZ Ram still in [id only swapped out CPU] its unlikely to be either ram-slots or indeed the ram itself, nor the Corsairs, i did swap between slots, its only one set-of-slots that doesnt do the doodad, i didnt know that bit about the whiteslots tho, cheers

i could care less if Win boots, ima Linux dev, on the team that makes aptosid, but yes, not-booting was the clue that something was amiss [!]

not enough qpi/vtt = unlikely also, BIOS is pretty much defaults

cpu heatsink too tight is a possibility, but the Noctua hold-downs aint overtight imho

bent cpu socket pin/pins then ...

tbh im loth to touch the bassterd again unless i can fix it

it should run tri channel with that cpu,im only suggesting possible causes as its only running in dual channel,you could try a long cmos clear by leaving out the motherboard battery for 30mins and then try,only way to be 100% sure is to go through each possible cause and check it,

yup, this CPU should have run the older OCZ ram in tri-channel

did that too, the long cmos clear

im treble-checking i aint missed a trick tho in cornering/isolating the cause

im reluctant to disturb CPU again till im SURE its the pins

so

i think this has to be a bent pins issue, i think ive exhausted all the other possibles

failing someone suggesting something i aint eliminated

my actual quandary is this

my system runs fine on the 4x2Gb [thats 2x2GbOCZ+2x2GbCorsair] at default setting in BIOS = 8Gb = noticeably better than 6Gb

i can get 4x4Gb Corsair with XMP for 50GBP = 16Gb, twice what ive got in now

or i can demount CPU, futz with pins, and buy 3x8Gb, MaxRam for this rig but DANGEROUS

id then have 2 sets-of-3 DDR3 1600mhz ram to get rid of, the Corsairs are Dominators [inc fan]

default is to do nothing, but i WANT MORE RAM

and Haswell is delayed again ..

i would look at the cpu pins or settle for 8gb dual channel?
