  • GA-Z77X-UP5 TH - does not start to BIOS, No display, nothing...

    Hi all,

I really hope that someone here can help me.

I purchased a complete new kit yesterday to build a monster machine for video editing, so everything is new and freshly unboxed.

The relevant kit to know about, and which is built at the moment, is:
    Motherboard: Gigabyte Z77X-UP5TH
    CPU: Intel i7-3770K
    Memory: Kingston KHX16C10B1K2 8GB (x4 to make 32GB)
    Cooler: Corsair H60
    PSU: Corsair CX750

I've been building machines for 20 years so I certainly know what I'm doing and can confirm that everything is mounted correctly.

    The problem is as follows:
When I boot the machine, all the relevant fans start up, and the LED on the motherboard starts to display its codes.
After a few seconds, it displays "Cb" (or perhaps "C6"), and then loops round again.

I don't get anything on the display (have tried DSUB, HDMI and DVI), and USB keyboard and mouse do not get to the point of having power sent to them - or at least not enough for the num-lock, caps-lock and scroll-lock lights to flash up.

The sequence of codes on the LED display I can identify (after filming and playing back slowly) are: 15, 36, 32, 4F, 60,62, 78, 72, 98, 9A, 96, Cb.

I have tried dismounting and remounting everything, verified that the power cables are in properly, tried the CMOS reset both ways (button and shorting out the pins, and the CMOS switch method), and have even replaced the battery.

What could be the reason for this? I have been searching on-line for over 8 hours in various sites, but to no avail. Have raised a ticket with Gigabyte, but they have not even read it yet...

No mater what I try, I have not yet seen the BIOS setings or had anything come up on-screen.

Please, if someone can give some help, that will be great - because its a 3 hour round-trip to the store where I bought this motherboard from, and only want to take it back if it really is needed.

    Thank you!

what is cb error code in your motherboard manual? test with only one ram stick installed,it could be due to 32gb of memory, you need to access the bios to manually set up the ram voltages ect for 32gb

Re: GA-Z77X-UP5 TH - does not start to BIOS, No display, nothing...

"C6" is listed as "reserved" in the manual.

But, after a lot of perseverance, I think that the problem is the PSU...

I found a few articles of people mentioning about incompatible PSUs, and I think this Corsair CX750 might be one of them.

I plugged in an 380W from my server and the machine booted wonderfully... (Never seen this new style BIOS with mouse controllable UI... very smart...)

So at least I know the motherboard, CPU and memory are all working 100%.

I then plugged in this new PSU to my server, just to verify - and that works 100%.

Plugging the PSU back into the new machine - loop, loop, loop - does not get to the BIOS.

So... What power supplies are compatible / known to work with this machine? I need at least 750W, as I have a GTX 660Ti to plug in, the 32GB RAM, one SSD and probably 2 1TB HDDs.

(One site I found talking about power supplies: First "Ultra Durable 5" Mainboards with Two Thunderbolt Ports: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP4 TH and GA-Z77X-UP5 TH Review. Page 12 - X-bit labs)

      Thanks!!!

Re: GA-Z77X-UP5 TH - does not start to BIOS, No display, nothing...

Newegg USA does not ship to other countries.
I assume that this applies to their Canadian operation.
I don't know if this also applies to their China operation.

You can use the forum's Advanced Search option where you type in: GA-Z77X-UP5 TH as the keyword search term where you can Search Entire Posts or Search Titles Only to see which psu models others are using with their UP5 motherboards.

Seasonic makes power supplies for other psu vendors, but you will need to read psu reviews to see which models are made by Seasonic. Currently all XFX power supplies are made by Seasonic. Some psu models from Antec, Corsair, and others are made by Seasonic. You can also check with online reviews of your motherboard model to see which psu models they used during their review.

The best psu review sites are JonnyGuru, HardOCP, HardwareSecrets, PCPER, TechPowerUp and BenchmarkReviews.

You might be able to use TX or AX psu models from Corsair. Their CX models are their economy line.
Seasonic is my number 1 choice for power supplies.

I'm running SeaSonic Platinum 1000 psu in two different machines, Z77 UD5H & Z77 UP4 TH and no problems. I'm not really sure what could make a psu incompatible? Never had that problem but I guess anything is possible. You can usually get the 1000 on Amazon.

Does it stay powered? (Like the light on the power led is still on, there's a debug LED Code, etc) Have you tried a different PSU? Have you tried with no other PCI-e/PCI (yes it has a PCI) or HDDs attached?

My first time to boot my UP5 TH was also facing a blank screen using hdmi off the integrated vc. Turns out the first time boot will directly lead you into the BIOS and there's a menu there asking if you want to enter the UEFI or load bios optimized defaults. I had to reinsert the hdmi cable to get to see this screen.

I have exactly the same problem. I am using the HDMI output and when I switch on I briefly get a glimpse of the BIOS screen or it could be some sort of splash screen I suppose. The led cycles through the same codes ending on Ab. I have checked everything on the machine and everything seems ok. I'm kind of glad that someone else has the same problem, if only we could sort it out. I have a CoolMaster Pro M2 850W power supply and can't believe that is at fault.

I do feel confidtant with myself putting this together, took a class for it in school. Still though i have never built my own PC and there is the possibility that i am making a simple mistake.

                            The problem is as follows:
When i boot up my machine everything sounds like its working fine, case fans are spinning heatsink is working fine, lights on the mother board are on and the Debug LED is changing numbers while the computer turns on. Only problem is that i dont get anything for a display on my monitor. Not a lit blank screen or anything, it just looks like its unplugged.

the Debug LED displays a long sequence of codes that i filmed and recorded as follows: 19, 15, 36, 4F, 60, 61, 99, 71, 9A, 96, 62, 99, 9C, ... without any hesitation between these two steps there is a beep ((post beep?)) that comes from the mic i have pluged in) ... 64, 88, 99, A8, A9,...then comes something that i think is "Ad" or what looks like a lowercase D. Cant find anything in the manual that helps with it.

Please, if someone can give some help, that will be great

Some of the comments say that it may be the power supply, currently i only have one power supply so any recomendations on how to check this out.
