  • GA-X79-UD5 UEFI-GPT boot

I have recently upgraded my system to a Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5.

I was able to boot to the hard drive from my previous system without reinstall (GA-EP45-UD3P, Windows 7 x64)
and update all the drivers with no issue.

Since the board has a UEFI BIOS and can boot into a GPT hard disk (mine is currently MBR),
I decided to perform a clean install of Windows 7 x64 using UEFI-GPT on a blank hard drive, again with no
    problems.

I was also able to restore a backup of Windows 7 x64, that had been created from my MBR system (using Acronis
TI 2011), on a second GPT partition of that new disk and dual-boot with no issues what-so-ever.

I then connected a number of data disks that have MBR partitions
    .
Windows 7, on the GPT disk, had no problems seeing and accessing these disks as expected.

The boot order in the BIOS is DVD drive then Windows Boot Manager

Now for the issue I ran into.

I connected an MBR disk that has an independant multi-boot of Windows 7 x64 and VISTA x64 on it (one of the
partitons is just storage and I wanted to see that data).

I made sure that the boot order in the BIOS pointed to Windows Boot Manager (GPT) that is required of
UEFI-GPT. I also made sure that the GPT disk was the first in the hard drive boot priority, although I
believe this is not really necessary for GPT.

When I booted the computer, I only got a black screen with a flashing cursor in the upper left of the screen.
This continued even after I removed the added MBR drive.

I was required to performed a start-up repair using the Windows 7 x64 DVD, booted in UEFI mode, to get
    everything back to normal.

I have tried to add the MBR disk after changing the boot order in as many ways as I could see, with the same
    results.

If I hot-plug the MBR (Windows 7 x64 and VISTA x64) drive after normal boot, Windows 7 can see and access it,
    with no issues.

It appears, when the system boots, something gets corrupted with the GPT boot if the MBR boot disk is in the
    system.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

Why do you want boot into a GPT hard disk? Whats the advantage? Sounds to me like you need more vcore or dvid voltage if you getting a black screen with a flashing cursor in the upper left of the screen.

          Thanks for the replys.

I am connected to the Intel SATA port 0.

Using UEFI-GPT is more robust than MBR and is why UEFI is part of the new boards.
The board boots and runs normally except for the conditions I stated.

Did you check the boot order in the BIOS menu?
