  • WIN 7 PRO OEM reinstall on new SSD/ MOBO

    Hi guys,
Going to be installing the Z68XP-UD3 in my rig with my OEM Win 7 Pro. Since I will be replacing the SSD (boot drive) and will do a complete reinstall, will I run into any issues with activation, or does that only happen (sometimes) when changing hardware without a Windows reinstall?

    Thanks!

Check out What Microsoft won't tell you about Windows 7 licensing | ZDNet (page 2), from 2009.
The OEM versions have limitations when it comes to replacing or upgrading some hardware components, such as cpu and/or motherboard.
If this is the first time that you are installing an OEM version, you shouldn't have any problems.
You might need to call MS tech support to clarify what you can and can't do with an OEM version.

Re: WIN 7 PRO OEM reinstall on new SSD/ MOBO

Well, I'm reinstalling Windows Pro OEM after upgrading the MOBO. The HTPC I'm building is going to use my current P67 board but I bought an OEM copy of Windows Home Premium for that machine.
If I can't get the reinstall validated I will be really pi$$ed, since I paid for it. I don't advocate bootleg OS's but........all I know is I'm not going to pay twice to stay legal.
Alright guys, thanks for the info.

Re: WIN 7 PRO OEM reinstall on new SSD/ MOBO

Let us know how it works out.
My understanding of the OEM windows versions is that it is ONLY for use on one system and that some specific hardware upgrades are not allowed.
I bought the win7 Home Premium family 3-pack for $130, knowing that the Home Premium version has some some limitations compared with the more expensive versions. I was able to legally do a clean install on each of my systems because the 3-pack license is a retail version.
3-pack availability is an on again off again proposition in the USA.

Hopefully you will be able to work with MS tech support to get your new system activated.

Re: WIN 7 PRO OEM reinstall on new SSD/ MOBO

Just built a system using the UD4 mobo and a SSD and while it ran nicely there was some bugs in starting it up ( boot loops and cold boot problems ) but looks like now its all nice ( thanks to help from this forum ) . Have a read so you learn about these before you start so you know about it and what to do.

As for OEM , had it on my other PC, have done a few rebuilds and first time auto activation worked, 2nd time I had to ring them and just told them I was replacing a part that failed......... they didnt ask many questions and gave me a key to type in and all was well. I really cant see you having any problems with MS

Re: WIN 7 PRO OEM reinstall on new SSD/ MOBO

Ya, OEM is one system only, especially tied to the motherboard.

Even enabling or disabling a LAN on the board from the BIOS that you didn't have set that way during the initial install will invalidate the install, so you could try to use that as an excuse for why it thinks you have a new board (Hint hint)

Or as mentioned above, you can normally tell them something fried on you and it was replaced. They are generally pretty nice about it, just keep in mind all they really want to hear is that the windows is installed on one computer ONLY.

And you will have to call in for sure since it's an OEM re-activation, retail disks only make you do that after so many hardware changes or re-activations.

Nice! Did you activate? If not it would be in trial mode for 30 days anyway, not sure how often it nags.

System properties will tell you if it's activated or not, if not click activate and hope you don't need to call. It's not a huge deal calling anyway, and you don't ever have to be on hold more than 2 minutes if that.
