A little OT, but I'm running Prime95 per your suggestion...the CPU is up at 85 degrees C per EasyTune6 (idle is around 44 degrees). Seems a little too hot, so I stopped the test...I probably need an aftermarket CPU fan. Any suggestions?

See what the temps are like with CoreTemp or Real Temp. The stock cooler should be sufficient for stock settings unless there the case is not propely cooled.

CoreTemp shows pretty much the same thing...around 44 degrees idle, high 80's when Prime95 is running.

I guess the 2600K is OC'd from 3.4 to 3.8. I guess I should probably take that down and see what I get.

Well, this is weird. After bringing the clock down to 3.4 from 3.8, I am now getting artifacts again. Not as many, but still there. I'm going to bump it up to 3.8 and run it for longer to see if it was just a time issue.

BTW Running at 3.4, my temp is only low 70's when running Prime95.

Low 70s still high for Prime95. How do you set voltage for 3.8GHz auto/fixed/normal+DVID?

The voltage settings are all on Auto. It picked the same QPI/VTT (1.05), DVDID is +0v. DRAM voltage is up to 1.6.

Well, I'm back to having Artifacts, even running at 3.8. I guess it was just a fluke that I didn't get them for so long before on 3.8.

Up next: Clean install of Windows.

its advised to stay under 72c if possible on those chips,its not like nehalem where 80c is the limit,as for coolers some of the corsair sealed watercolers perform well like the h70/h80

BTW,did you try with different ram? if using igp it shares pc memory so could be related to that?

Too late...bought the Zalman. I guess if I do some serious OC'ing I'll upgrade it.

wazza: I did end up replacing the ram with DDR3 2100; no change.

So far I've been using my re-nuked PC for about a day now, with Office/Word off and on, and no issues.

It could very well have been some legacy crap in drivers or something.

I'm taking my time with the rebuild, so I haven't yet installed Office 2010 SP1 (though Office 2010 is installed) or IE9, both of which have been linked to artifact issues. I also haven't yet installed the drivers for the Intel HD 3000 or the motherboard itself (in terms of chipset drivers).

I'll probably use it just like this for a week or so just to confirm that the problem doesn't exist, then I'll add the HD3000 drivers, then Office SP1, then IE9, etc. with a few days of usage in between to make sure that I don't re-introduce the problem.

It seems like kind of a cop out to nuke a box to fix it, so I'm kind of hoping through this process I discover what it was.

ive been testing a 2600k chip but with an asus board,no artifacts with igpu or graphic card,i use ie9 but not office

So far so good still; no artifacts since the clean install. I ended up installing the HD drivers from WindowsUpdate, and still no issues.

I'm going to install the chipset drivers and HD drivers from the Gigabyte site and run with that for a while to see what happens.

lets hope youve cracked it,make some restore points before you install the chipset drivers and hd drivers ect,then you might be able to restore,or right click in device manager and restore to previous version ect
