  • Memory In Slot 2 Or 4 Causes Rebooting Loop

    Hi,

I have recently purchased a GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 (rev 1.3). Also, I have bought a 2x4GB DDR3 1600 memory to go along with my build. The problem I have is when I put in both of my ram sticks in slot 1 & 2 or 3 & 4, I get a rebooting loop problem and never reach POST. I can put in a single stick of ram (either one) in slot 1 or 3 and the PC boots up fine. I have installed my OS this way.

I appreciate any suggestions on narrowing down the problem. Thanks.

    I tried to:
    - clear CMOS using the jumpers
    - upgraded BIOS to F9
    - disable XMP and enable XMP
    - revert back to backup BIOS

    System:
    GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 (rev 1.3)
    i5 2500k
    2 WD Black 1TB
    Corsair 650w
    GSkill 2x4GB DDR3 1600 v1.5 (8GBXL) and Mushkin 2x4GB DDR3 1600 v1.5

can you boot with all 16gb of ram installed? using all four ram slots?tested the other sticks in slot 1 and 3 just to make sure they are working?

      <s>To run dual-channel mode you need to install the memory in slots 1 & 3 or 2 & 4</s>
I see the numbering of the slots is different in this board.
Try a single module in slots 2 and 4. If they are both ok start increasing vtt one step at a time. There shouldn't be a need for a lot, make 1.2v upper limit.

Ugh... bad timing. The GSkills were my friend's. He just picked them back up.

All I have left are my Mushkins. I never intended to run 16GB so I never even thought of filling up all slots.

From past experience and by reading the manual, it says for dual-channel with two modules, you are to install one stick in 1 and 2 or 3 and 4. What are the consequences if I install them side-by-side?

If installed side-by-side, they do indeed work and list as 8GB.

Edit: I see you updated. A single module in slot 2 or 4, reboots my system in a loop.

Re: Memory In Slot 2 Or 4 Causes Rebooting Loop

does it say correct installation for 4gb sticks? or double sided ram, normally for dual channel its first ram socket from cpu leave blank then add one stick, next one blank then add second stick

if your using 8gb(four 2gb sticks) or 16gb (four 4gb sticks) then you use all slots,it was much easier when the ram slots were colour coded white and blue, but theyve changed it to all black

I read the manual maybe once too many times already :)

            [CPU]
            -DDR3_4-
            -DDR3_2-
            -DDR3_3-
            -DDR3_1-

For my case, the correct installation for two modules (according to the manual) are:
            1) 1 and 2
            OR
            2) 3 and 4

I do not understand why the numbering is like this but that's another conversation.

I have tried both configs and my system reboots.

I have continued my search and I have come across this disturbing post. GA-Z68X UD4 BH3 will Only Run RAM in Certain slots, Won't POST if in Others

I have ordered my Gigabyte motherboard from NCIX (Canada). I am not bending any pins back, forth, or any which way...

Re: Memory In Slot 2 Or 4 Causes Rebooting Loop

what they mean by bent pins if any cpu socket pins are bent it will affect the memory amongst other things due to the memory controller being built into the cpu,how you know no pins are bent have you checked carefully?

thats right for dual channel, slots 3 and 4 ,if your using more than two sticks of ram then you use the other slots up

test one stick at a time in slot 3,then repeat the test in slot 4,you need to find out which slot out of 3 and 4 isnt working and whether you have a dead or faulty ram module so test one stick at a time in each slot at a time

Re: Memory In Slot 2 Or 4 Causes Rebooting Loop

BTW, thanks to all that took time to reply.

OK, I tested out each slot again with each 4GB stick.

                [CPU]
                *-DDR3_4-*
                *-DDR3_2-*

                -DDR3_3-
                -DDR3_1-

Slots DDR3_4 and DDR3_2 causes a reboot loop. Are there any other tests that I can do?

Re: Memory In Slot 2 Or 4 Causes Rebooting Loop

A single stick should have worked, if it does in the other slots.
Could be a defect in the board or bent pins in the CPU socket.

I think I will head back to the store to do an exchange at best. Hopefully, I wont be lucky twice.

                    Thank you everyone.
