  • BIOS Settings: GA-990FXA-UD3, AMD PHENOM II X6 1075T 3.0GHZ, & F3-12800CL8D-8GBXM RAM

    Hello:

I have just put together a new system with the subject parts (motherboard, CPU, and RAM) and I am trying to set everything first to just their specified settings (CPU - 3.0 GHz with Turbo 3.5GHz; RAM - 1600GHz with 8-8-8-24-2N). Unfortunately, I assumed the BIOS would take care of that but it hasn't. The BIOS speaks of "Set Memory Clock" and then uses X4.00, X5.33, X6.66, & X8.00 but I can't make heads nor tails of what this means.

Any help will be most appreciated!

    Thank you in advance.

The memory clock is half the double data rate, which in your case is 1600, so the clock should be 800.
The memory clock is the result of FSB(200MHz) times memory-multiplier, so you need x8.00.

    Set memory-multipler x8.00, timings 8-8-8-24, DRAM Voltage 1.5-1.575v.
For high speed memory and/or large capacity it is almost certain you will need to increase CPU NB VID Control. Increase it gradually if needed, but don't exceed 1.35v.
Make a memtest86+ bootable USB flash-drive, and run a few passes before running windows.
In windows run a Prime95 blend torture for 6-8 hours to make sure the system is stable.

This memory is designed for Intel P67/Z68 chipsets, lets hopeit works for you.
For a significant increase in memory performance you will have to set higher FSB(overclock).

      Hello, Chike:

First I want to thank you for all of the information - it was exactly what I needed to know!

Then, regarding the memory, I had asked your question of G.Skill because all of their adverts listed the memory as being "Designed For 2nd Generation Intel

Nice to see you are doing OK without changing voltages. Check the BIOS HW Monitor, it may be already over volting the memory.
I till recommend running Prime95 blend torture for 6+ hours You can customize the blend to run each test 8-10 minutes only to run more tests.

Don't put high expectations in video encoding improvement, you will see a minor improvement at best. Memory has not much impact on performance, especially in well optimized software.

If you wish to overclock you may get much better results. It's a little risky, but if you do it right and don't push anything to extreme it usually pay up.
