Gigabyte EP45-UD3P SATA ports

Hi all,

Am looking at a GFX card upgrade and need to make room around the 1st PCI-E x16 slot. Unfortunately, have used 5 of the 6 SATA ports so looking at getting some HBA card to move my SATA drives over. I plan to leave some drives connected to the ICH10R.

So my question is: Is it possible to have your boot drive on a SATA port other than port 0, such as ports 1, 3 or 5?

Why do you need to move your boot drive to another port? I have the EP45-UD3P and my GTX260 does not block any ports. All 6 of the Intel ports are accesible. The card comes very close to bocking the top row of ports but just barely leaves enough room. Pretty sure Gigabyte designed it this way just to be sure the ports would not be covered up. There are also 2 other SATA ports on that board that are controlled by the Gigabyte RAID controller so you have 8 ports total, not just 6. As for your question, yes you can have your boot drive on any of the ports as long as you specify it in BIOS, but usually the BIOS can figure this out on its own.

I don't know how this myth evolved but there is no restriction on which port would be the boot drive.
I have 2 boot drives and I switche between them as I wish.

Put an Asus GTX570 DirectCU II on there and let me know if you still have 6 accessible SATA ports from the ICH10R.

There are also 2 other SATA ports on that board that are controlled by the Gigabyte RAID controller so you have 8 ports total, not just 6.

I try to avoid those ports, as the HDDs are mounted as SCSI units in Windows, rather than being identified by their proper names and type. Plus, I use those ports for eSATA.
