gbtupd.exe and runupd.exe

Hello All,

I received the last of my computer components yesterday, put the thing together, surprise, surprise, it works.

I have a Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H motherboard. When I start my computer two programs run. gbtupd.exe and runupd.exe. I believe they are coming from Gigabyte software, some king of update stuff. Do I need them? As long as my computer works, I'm not that interested in every update. Also I try to keep as few things running on my computer as possible, and not have a bunch of stuff start up automatically.

Are they run from that stuff when you type msconfig in the command line and click on the 'Start' tab? Can I uncheck something in there and get rid of one or both of those programs without causing a problem?

should be able to stop them without issue,some software programs let you disable start up programs ect,or check things like easytune or any gigabyte software you have installed and un-tick update at start up ect

Thanks for the heads up. I looked at the Gigabyte programs in the Programs Menu. Gigabyte has a program called UpdManager. In that, I checked 'Turn off automatic updates'. Maybe that will do it.

cCleaner is an excellent freeware program that will let you easily disable/enable or delete startup programs.
Disabled programs remain in the startup list and won't run while disabled. You can later enable any disabled programs.

Turning off automatic updates in UpdManager has stopped gbtupd.exe from running, but it hasn't stopped runupd.

I know where the program is: C:\Program Files (x86) . . . somewhere. I could disable it, but I would like to know what it does.

I think I will start a new thread with that question.

Thanks again ProfJim, that cleaner program sounds handy if I need it. Although it is another thing to run in the background, it may be a good way to keep track of what has been disabled.

I do make an attempt to keep unnecessary things from running. If you let a little thing go here and there, eventually you have a lot of unnecessary things running and a slow computer.

cCleaner runs in the foreground, only when you want to use any of its many features. It never runs in the background.
If you disable a startup entry, it should remain disabled in the cCleaner startup list until you re-enable or disable an entry.
Try it, you'll like it!

Runs in the foreground only when you need it, that does sound good. I'll download it later today and take a look.

runupdate.exe might be a part of gigabyte update,try disabling it and if nothing happens then leave it disabled

^^ I agree, chances are both of the GB programs are related to the update system.
Several years ago, I ran across a program the lists all file dependencies between executable files and/or DLLs on your system.
Sorry I can't remember the name of the program.

Thanks Folks,

I downloaded CCleaner and used it to disable C:\ProgramFiles (x86)\Gigabyte\GBTUpd\PreRun.exe in the msconfig start menu. That stopped runupd.exe from running. I believe runupd is trying to update some of the software that came on the Gigabyte disc. I'm not concerned with that, but will try to remember to let runupd do its thing sometime, and see if it actually updates something. All it says now is "You have the latest version."

I haven't looked closely at the CCleaner program yet, but it looks handy. Also looks like you have to be careful using some parts of it.
