  • GA-EP45-UD3P don't work with 4x2GB OCZ2P8004GK

At the start of the year, I built my current comp but after many unsuccessful tries, I never made my 4 banks of 2GB OCZ2P8004GK work together, so I settle for only 4GB. But now, I'm in need to upgrade to 8GB so that's why I'm coming to ask for your help.

I did memtest and all banks passed; changed twice the motherboard with same results so I believe it may be a setting problem so here are my specs:

    Code:

    Re: GA-EP45-UD3P don't work with 4x2GB OCZ2P8004GK

1.Its been awhile since I had my Q8200 but the Q8400 is very similar.

2.Load and save optimised defaults in bios, then reboot and enter the bios.

    3. Ill just change any settings ,I think may help without a cpu overclock.

    4. set your pci clock drive to 900mv and your cpu clock drive to 800mv

5.then working from the bottom of the bios upward

(a)The DRAM voltage for your memory is supposed to be 2.1v at 800mhz yes?.Enter that in manually and hit F10 and save and boot.
If that doesnt work for you go back into bios again:
(b)leave the memory V at 2.1V .Go to MCH voltage you could start off with 1.16 V try that, if no good go back in and try 1.18.then 1.20-1.24V
leave memory at 2.1v and mch at 1.24V or whatever mch voltage you needed.
(c)you should now be able to manually enter memory timings of 5-5-5-15.
I think your memory is supposed to run 5-4-4-15 at 800mhz but just try 5-5-5-15 first.

You might have to change static read settings or tweak other things if those settings dont work but try those first.

Could you post a screen capture of MemSet main and SPD(click spd) windows?
Also please check BIOS PC Health for actual applied DRAM Voltage.
Are you with 8GB now or just 4GB?

        Re: GA-EP45-UD3P don't work with 4x2GB OCZ2P8004GK

First of all, thanks kick and Chike for your replies. Now, I did many tests and tried many configuration, one by one, suggested by kick. No matter what I do, I can't make the four (or even three) banks work together.

I did try every tiny change kick suggested to the basic configuration, started with only 2 banks (dimm # 1 & 2) and every time I changed the settings, both loaded without troubles. But when i tried to add dimm 3 and 4 it didn't flash and run into a loop.

For every setting, i also tried to start it with only dimm #3 & #4, no go; #1 & #3, no go; #2 & #4, no go. #1 & # 4, no go; #2 & #3, no go. Is it possible that dimm #3 & #4 are dead? As I told you this is the second mobo, because when it happened the first time I requested a RMA and got this one.

As suggested, I'm attaching memtest and pc health screenshots. Is there a way to test dimm #3 & #4 health, like trying only one bank on each? or any application that can do that? And yes Chicke, I'm only running 4GB at the moment.

        Thanks again for your time.

Yes, please try with just one module at slots 3 then slot 4. Could be a channel problm, motherboard or other.
Run several loops of memtest86+ for each of them.
Also try to clear CMOS before you start, load optimized defaults and se set performance enhance to standard (no other changes in MIT)

Well, I didn't want to come to this conclusion but yeah... I try one module on slot 3 and then 4 with same results: it didn't flash. Just in case did the same with slots 1 and 2 and it started normally. Unless you come with a trick under the arm, I believe these slots are dead.

So, what to do next? My return window with Amazon expired on Feb 19th, 2010leaving me with two options: buy 2 x 4G modules or replace mobo but maybe with one that will take everything I currently have. Any suggestions?

And once again, thanks for your time.

              By "flash" you mean boot?
If the motherboard is in fault you better rplace it. If Amazon won't replace it GIGABYTE will.

Yes Chike, by flash i meant boot; it dont' even get monitor signal so yeah I just read on Gigabyte site that there mobos have a 3 year warranty. I guess I will start a RMA request but still wondering: is it possible to get two damaged mobos in a row? The only answer to that is that both were from the same batch and hopefully a replacement will be from another.

Did the other motherboard you RMAd had the same problem with slots 3 & 4?
Are you sure it has been replaced? Write the serial number to be sure.

Yeah, Amazon sent me the replacement while I still had the first one.

                      Re: GA-EP45-UD3P don't work with 4x2GB OCZ2P8004GK

There are a couple more things you can try to be absolutely sure..
                      first a few questions tho
I think you said every stick you have works, you tried them all on their own in slot 1. and tested
+ have you also tried every pair combination in slots 1 and 3.

                      Just to be sure .
memory slots 1 and 2 being occupied with 3 and 4 empty, are no real use to you with ddr2 memory
Slot 1 is the memory slot closest to the cpu and slot 4 is the memory slot furthest from the cpu.
With 2 sticks of memory in they should have been in slots 1 and 3 all this time.

Perhaps you mean slots 1 and 2 are actually slots 1 and 3(the same colour).
By now your matched pair sticks of memory are probably all mixed up,unless you marked each pair when they came out of the packets?

Anyway.let us know what 2 slots the memory has been in .. exactly.

Assuming there is no confusion for now.. put one stick in slot 1 (the one closest to the cpu)for now.

                      Post up on optimised defaults

Posting is getting to the bios screen
Booting up the pc is getting into the operating system successfully.

With the stick in slot 1 load and save optimised defaults.

Then try each of the other 3 sticks in turn in slot 3 ie good stick of 2gb memory in slot 1 then next slot is left empty then another stick in slot 3.
Keep going till you get a post.
edit:if you dont get a post with the first stick you try in slot 3 ,you will have to take it out and repost and load and save optimised defaults again before trying the next stick.
If you dont get a post with any of the other 3 sticks:
leave the single stick in slot one ,go into the bios and add a memory voltage of 2.1v and save the change, not auto or 1.9 .. make sure the pc health screenshot like the one you posted shows at least 2.05v for the ram .
then try all 3 sticks in slot 3 again.
edit 2:by now you should have an optimed defaults except for memory voltage at 2.1 V profile saved in bios. (F11 and F12 keys) so you should be able to just load that in after each optimised default save

If that doesnt work you may have to repeat the procedure with now not only the memory voltage raised to what it should be for the ram speed but also some increase on the mch voltage as outlined above,,for all extra sticks.

If you do know which pair came together in the packets it would speed testing up a lot.
Also if Im confused on your slot testing you could clear that up too.

                      see how it goes.
I hope you can see where Im coming from..My mbrd ,2years ago did not recognise my memory speed ,voltage and configuration straight off.I had to adjust things. It did however allow me to boot on crappy settings and I was able to adjust them later.
You,well we have a dual controller for memory one controller on slots 1 and 3 and one controller on slots 2 and 4. so slot 1 should be filled first or slot 2 if there is some problem with slot ,but the least likely scenario is both slots 3 and 4 being defective twice.
A more likely scenario is either 2 sticks pf ram arent matched for ddr2 operation .or ,well anyway try your best to get memory working in slots 1+3.

Hey kick, you may have a valid point here; the way the slots are placed are:

                        [CPU] [SLOT 1] [SLOT 2] [SLOT 3] [SLOT 4]

and all this time my computer had being working with 2 sticks in slots 1 & 2. So, I will do the additional tests you mentioned tomorrow morning. Hopefully I will find the paired sticks and make it work! Thanks again for your input.
