  • UEFI on Gigabyte Motherboards?

    Hello,

    Which gigabyte motherboards support UEFI?

I keep hearing that Gigabyte supports UEFI on their motherboards, but I cannot find any information on Gigabyte's website. Are all of the BIOS on gigabytes boards just UEFI in disguise or is there a way to flash UEFI onto their motherboards? Do they have enough CMOS to even hold UEFI?

My gigabyte board now is the GA-X58A-UD3R (rev. 2.0).

    Thanks

Yes, no EFI or UEFI in any current desktop boards, or future plans for such that I'm aware of.

My next MB will be UEFI.

The PC industry is really lagging behind here. Mac computers have used UEFI since 2007.

Booting Windows 7 from a 3TB hard drive requires UEFI!

And 1-2TB hard drives require slower backwards compatibility modes in order to boot. These drives run faster when they use the mode with a larger block size. Win7 supports the larger block size, but BIOS won't boot it. So the only way to run the drive in the faster mode is as a secondary, non-bootable drive.

I would like to buy a new motherboard, but this situation is ridiculous! I don't care about fancy UEFI graphics, I just want a motherboard that will use current hard drives in their fastest mode, and will allow booting from hard drives 3TB or larger.

My next MB will be UEFI. How long do I have to wait?

And I hear they may implement EFI onto the P67 at a later date, the hardware is already capable.

That shows normal BIOS, what were you referring to?

Maybe I missed what you meant?

                      Re: UEFI on Gigabyte Motherboards?

The item's help text has interesting words:
                      To choose whether to
                      boot CD via EFI
                      interface such as
                      64bit Window 7
                      installation CD.

                      EFI is essential to
                      support >2.2TB HDD.

                      If there is no >2.2TB
                      HDD installed, You
                      may choose Non-EFI
                      CD boot.
Granted, when have the manuals corresponded to actual products?

                        Ahh, ok, thanks!

I think they will be moving to EFI sometime for these boards, at least that's what I've heard buzzing around, just not sure when it will be implemented.

Where do you see images at, or did you mean just due to the above?

Actually, my my first thought about that BIOS screen says: Lets just add the "Can boot from 3 TB EFI bits" and keep the familiar BIOS setup.

However, that would only make sense, if it were cheaper/easier to do than UEFI proper. Anyway, lets hope the buzz gets real sooner than later, but lets not forget to breathe in the meantime.
