  • X58A-UD3R - won't hold memory speed with new PSU?

I swapped out my Thermaltake CR-550B 550W PSU for a Coolermaster Silent Pro M 700W because I wanted to have a bit more 'breathing room'. After I installed it, the system now has small DPC spikes every 2 seconds where it didn't before, and after a reboot, the BIOS would come up and say "You had an overvoltage condition and we're resetting the BIOS". It drops the memory form 1600Mhz to 1066Mhz and then runs fine. If I set it back to the settings I had before on the Thermaltake PSU, it would do the same thing again. I pulled out the Coolermaster and put the Thermaltake back, reset the settings back, and now it runs stable at 1600Mhz yet again.

I did notice the Power for +5V was at 4.58'ish or so in the BIOS.

Anyone seen something like this before? Sounds like it needs to go back.

Re: X58A-UD3R - won't hold memory speed with new PSU?

I went into the BIOS, changed the settings back, then saved them so it came back up at 1600Mhz instead of 1066. But I did not explicitedly go in there load optimized, save, reboot, reset with OC, save and reboot, no. Each time I did save at 1600, it 'crowbar' the system during a reboot of the OS, and it would reset itself back to 1066. It also take forever to boot and click several times until it rebooted finally. If it was set at 1066 with the new PSU, it would successfully reboot multiple times. It just won't hold 1600Mhz. But with the old PSU back in the unit, it will reboot multiple times successfully with 1600Mhz.

I also noticed, in the OS, I would get the DPC latency sipked every other polling period when set at 1600Mhz on the new PSU. If it was at 1066, I had no DPC spikes on the new PSU. With the old PSU, even with the 1600Mhz settings, I have no DPC spikes.

cheack the wattage for each line/cable on both psu's,the one thats failing probably has a lower 12v rail wattage than the other one,it will tell you the ratings for each socket/plug on the side of the psu

Surprisingly, it's the opposite; failing PSU has 1 12V rail at 50A, while 'working' one has 2 +12v rails at 18A apiece.
