    Hello. I have been trying to get a stable overclock for quite a while, and every time I try to increase the OC, I get errors in memtest. Right now, I have a rock solid system, but it is fairly gimped. I am aiming for a 400x8 setup with a 2.00B strap, but every time I try and do this, the system stability gets gradually worse over the course of a week, where the hardware won't even be recognized by POST.

    On an ice cold boot (PSU turned off for 30 seconds or more), I would get no errors in memtest for at least six hours. There are 3-5 errors during the second day. During the third day it would increase to 3-5 errors every pass. On the fourth day, 3-5 every test. Fifth day it goes to every minute. Sixth day, every second. If that's not exponential degradation, I don't know what is. Of course, an ice cold reboot resets this procedure.

    Fortunately, my current setup has not had a memtest error at any time. I would love to find out what I would need to do to get it to 400x8. I know it may be difficult, as the P45 REALLY doesn't like it when there are 8 gigs in the system, but I know it might be a possibility.

    CPU Termination (VTT) up to 1.30 - 1.35 might help when using CPU Vcore = 1.40
    With 8GB of memory:
    set DRAM Voltage to its rated 2.00 volt setting
    MCH Core Voltage = 1.26 or 1.28 might be needed

    Have you performed any other stress tests such as LinX or IBT (Intel BurnTest) for 10 passes?
    Prime95 is an excellent test when run for at least 8 - 12 hours.

    You might need to underclock your memory speed somewhat for stability (e.g. 667 - 750MHz).

      I don't know what P45 likes or not. I recall a user that reported to install 16GB and it worked right away with optimized defaults without a hassle.
      Leavint VTT(CPU Termination) and PLL on auto might unnesessarally overvolt them. Can you post a screen capture of EasyTune->Tuner->Advanced->Voltage tab?
      Have you tried to set 4-4-4-12 timings with your current overclock?

        What is auto actually giving you for tRD? Please check with memset, auto/what you see in the BIOS is not always what is used.

        And with your memory, as I have it myself, you may need to use 2.00D instead at 400 or above FSB, which also means you need to set your own tRD and likely this will need to be 8-9

          Jim: My CPU overclock is very stable. I once let P95 run for two days without error, but I have not run IBT. I can do this tomorrow, though. On the VTT, that seems a little high according to LSD's suggestion to leave it at 1.2 (on the P45 template). Does this setting affect MCH or memory stability, or is it strictly CPU? When I was able to run my CPU at 3.2 (9 * 355) for stress purposes, I needed a 1.45v VCore and a 1.24v VTT for it to be stable. Would that much of a difference cause memory instability?

          LSD: tRFC and tRD (that's performance level, right?) are 52 and 7 respectively. But many values look considerably different than what was reported in the bios. I don't know if this is relevant or not, but I may as well provide the numbers.

          Memset reported latencies on 333x2.40B strap:

          Since Chike suggested to take a look at my voltages, I noticed something peculiar. After I increased VDIMM to 2.0v in the BIOS, ET6 reports Termination, channel a+b reference, and MCH/DRAM reference as 0.9v. I was under the impression that these values were supposed to increase proportionately with VDIMM voltages, and should thus be 1.0v on auto. Is this not the case? And if so, might this be one of the possible sources of my problem?

          Anyway, I'd post screengrabs, but I'm quite busy and unavailable tonight. I may post them tomorrow.

          Please forgive my n00bish and/or hypochondriac-like questions :D.

            Basically ET6 shows the reference values as they would be for 1,2v VTT and not actual VTT.
            The same apply to DRAM/MCH Reference, DRAM Termination, and channel references and default 1.8v DRAM Voltage.

              performance lvl is tRD yeh and the lower the figure ,the higher the perfomance lvl,or the more performance you are trying to get from the memory.
              I dont like ET dumped it awhile back ,but it is usefull to show what the board is applying/trying for with for auto settings.
              The reference figures will increase if you set them manually , prior to increasing the VDIMM.
              The ref voltages (if setting them yourself) have a general recommendation of not more than 50% of VDIMM.
              Sometimes the divider will be a little off.
              A manually set VDIMM , for me at least allways gives a voltage drop in actual use. I set 2.1 ,I get 2.08 etc.

              tRFC of 52 is a figure I get when setting memory performance to "Turbo" ,normal would be 66.You might get away with 48 depending on the other timings.

                Thank you both for helping to clear that up.

                Anyway, I have set VTT to 1.28v (1.30v refused to boot for some reason), and the ram appears to be much more stable when using 400x2.00D. Not as efficient as I would have hoped, but hopefully an improvement. tRD had to be set to 10 for memtest not to complain about roughly 2000 totally random errors (all of which were 000000ff) in test number three alone. But it's been a day and a half, and no memtest errors have been seen.

                I'll post back in a few days if things start to destabilize.

                  Are you using the latest BIOS?
                  tRD 10 is way high, 8 should be possible, 9 definatly should work.
                  It's possible you have a faulty module or memory slot. I would try them as pairs at their rated timings and voltage.

                    Hmmm... I don't know what to make of that. My VDIMM is now at 2.04v (reported as 2.01v in PC Health Stats and HWMonitor), with loosened timings. tRD at 8 was giving me infinite reboot syndrome, so I found it no surprise that 9 was unstable. This is, of course, only a problem when all modules are in use. I've already tried isolating it to a module, transfer mode, or slot. No problems exist when I'm using 4GB, no matter what kind of configuration I use.


                    Some I/O performance does seem to be lacking with 400x2.00D though, like a 2.5 - 3 second delay between the Windows 7 boot sound and the login notification sound, much like how it was with the 333x2.40B configuration. When I used 350x2.00B, it was nearly instantaneous, even though the memory was operating at a lower frequency. I thought it was all due to CPU:DRAM synchronicity. But oh well. Que sera, sera.

                    Anyway, I am using the F12 BIOS; the F13e bios that is provided in the sticky doesn't specify 1.0 or 1.1, and the betabios path in the URL kinda indicates it might not be ready yet. I don't know how or if QFlash has gotten any better since the prime of SKT939, but back then, if you updated your firmware to a new revision, you were not going back to an older one without a fresh EEPROM from the factory. So unless this isn't a problem anymore, I'd prefer not to go to F13e.

                      tRD 9 should work, once you have the correct voltages, 10 shouldn't be needed at all.

                      There is no difference in BIOS between 1.0 and 1.1 on this board, you can use the latest one listed. And yes, you can flash to any BIOS you want, and then backwards to any one as well as long as your CPU is still supported by the older ones.

                        A few updates:

                        I was able to get 399x2.00B nearly stable with 4-4-4-12 timings with tRD 8. The voltages are nowhere near the values recommended to me. This is what it looks like:

                        CPU VTT: 1.20v
                        MCH Voltage: 1.16v
                        VDIMM: 1.90v
                        VDIMM Termination: 1.045 (55% of VDIMM)

                        After two days of memtest, I have a total of five errors. That's much better than the previous 400x2.00D setting with 5-5-5-15 timings with a tRD of 9 (several thousand errors after two days).

                        My VDIMM could be dropped to as low as 1.86v, but I chose to set it to 1.9v in order to give it a nice, healthy buffer. 2.0v, which is what it is rated at, caused increased degradation.

                        I increased VDIMM termination just because of the fact that a higher termination decreases voltage noise (if I understand that part correctly), but I didn't go any higher because it was recommended that it be set no higher than 50% VDIMM. I don't know how much further I can push it before it becomes unsafe.

                        When MCH voltage was set to 1.1v, I had zero memory errors, but I would get BSODs in Prime95 blend, probably because memtest doesn't stress anything more than the controller. Not a lot of CPU, PCIe, or other northbridge related stress. Setting to 1.16 fixed this.


                        So, with that mentioned, is any new light shed on this situation? The closer to standard voltages, the better it operates. I don't know if it's a PSU or MOSFET problem, a heat issue (which I seriously doubt), or if it's just the fickle nature of the P45. Either way, it appears I am getting closer to appropriate voltages.

                        Where would I go from here? Which settings should I try changing next? I haven't touched the reference voltages, as I have no idea how they work.

                          Have you tested with:
                          • Intel BurnTest or LinX: 10 loops maximum using the maximum amount of memory
                          • Prime95: Blend, small FFT and large FFT tests (8 - 12 hours or more for each test)
                          Watch your cpu core temperatures while running IBT or LinX.
                          Are you using the latest version of Memtest86+?

                            As I said previously, I can run any prime95 test practically forever without error, at least until my memory stability degrades (which seems to happen on a fairly consistent rate). The highest temps I've ever seen was 44c for system, and core 0 tJ (always the hottest) was 74c.

                            However, I just ran IBT, and my CPU was not too happy about it. In the middle of pass 4, it failed. Core 0 tJ went from 68c to 82c in the matter of two seconds, followed immediately by a power down. Suffice to say, I never want to do that again.


                            As for the template, here is the modified version of what was posted in the OP to reflect my current setup (399x2.00B) instead of (333x2.40B). Compare and contrast :).

                              I would use VDim Ref Auto, and set your ram to the rated amount, then test things as you have been.

                              I would also set Driving Strength Profiles, to your ram speed or one above if it will boot.

                              Do not trust any setting value you see in the BIOS, check voltages with Easytune and memory timings with Memset
