p55A High Pitch Whine

I have a Gigabyte P55A-UD3 with an i875k processor in it. When I overclock and load up the CPU with something like Intel Burn Test it seems like the voltage regulators (I believe that is what they are) squeal/hiss/whine/some high pitch noise.

Now I have diabled the C states and EiST, etc but it does not help. I set the voltage directly and that does not help. It also squeals under the high load. I have been able to tell it is the 3 to the left of the CPU socket the top 3 are just fine.

Do I have a bad board that I need to RMA or is this something I can fix?

what make of psu are you using? it probably that although gigabyte boards do squeal,even mine does it although my psu is a cheap one

Its a high end power supply not a cheap one.

Also I am talking very high pitch and loud... I am watercooling with quiet fans and it is louder then everything in my system... I can hear it from 2 rooms away easily!

do you have a spare psu to try with? its either your psu or graphics card or combination of both,if it still does it with other psu's then probably a faulty board but its very common with gigabyte although it shouldnt be that loud

if you did want to try another psu i would go for the corsair hx models as i havnt seen anyone post about squealing with those units,again i cant be 100% sure that it would fix it as it could be your gpu aswell emitting emi(electromagnetic interference) and again it could be the mb coils but they are solid capacitors

I have another seasonic s12 and a crappier ocz one I can try... As for graphics card I am using the same as you a sapphire vapor-x 5770.

I will try to with the diff psu later but how would the PSU make the noise if it is emanating from the motherboard? Also I got this PSU because it is basically fan-less at lower loads so it makes no noise and its got some of the best reviews for tight tolerance on its voltage and ripples.

Also it is definitely loud..

well i have c1e disabled and i still hear slight whine when in crysis game menu from my gpu and in ie only very slight and when im using headphones,nothing when using speakers,apart from that i cant hear anything,try with each psu and see if it makes any difference,if the psu isnt propperly shielded then emi will effect the mb/gpu and so on causing it to make this noise

anything with an electric motor usually causes it,even your watercooling pump,the electric unit in the psu can interfere with components
it wont cause any harm just produce an irritating squeal

Well I will try different PSU and report my results once I get back home tonight...

Still odd since I have never had any issues with other motherboards before... Seems more a MB issue then anything else.

it is,gigabyte boards suffer from it more than others,but changing the psu can stop it,if not then rma or switch to another brand mb

Sigh I was hoping that the PSU might make a difference... I tried the OCZ power supply and absolutely no change... If I don't overlock then the whine is barely noticeable but still there only on full load. Then as I increase bclk and multiplier it gets louder and louder!

So I guess it must be the board?

its strange that its doing it when overclocked and higher voltages,normally its the other way around and low voltages/underclocked when it squeals,if you want to rma the mb then its up to you,they might test it and find no problem and charge you idk

What else can I change out/test?

And yeah I know usually it happens the other way around which is why I was a little confused and why none of the fixes for that help.

did you try with that other psu you had the other seasonic one?? tried to route all psu and audio wires behind the mb tray?

I tried with the other PSU... no audio cables connected it was basically just hd plugged in mb and video card and thats it.

First way was wires routed behind and with 2nd psu they are just plugged in and hanging outside the case...

I might just buy another motherboard (same model) and see if it does the same...

its up to you,i just dont want gigabyte to test it and say theres nothing wrong with it when there is which is likely,or go asus instead? you could have a defective mb/coils though

Sigh the frustration!

I got another P55A-UD3 from the store thinking it was just mine.. nope that one whines as well.. its not as loud but still loud!

Hopefully I can return this one without a restocking fee.

Also the annoying thing is if I don't overclock I have no issues at all its only when I overclock that I get the noises... but I didn't invest all this money in water cooling to not overclock!

I guess I have to sell the MB on ebay at a loss and maybe pick up an asus... I will try to RMA first and see if they can do anything I guess.
