  • SATA HD speeds slower after dvd drive install

Today I installed a SATA DVD drive. My last was IDE. Well prior to the install of this SATA DVD drive, when I would bench my Seagate Barracude. I get a solid 103 MB/s speed all day long.

    Now..

Im getting 95 to 98 MB/s. This is using HDtune. The only thing I changed/swapped was plugging in another SATA cord for my new DVD drive.

    Should I use a specific SATA port>?

Just curious if this is normal. Thank you kindly.

    PC is in my sig.

you should use port 4/5 for sata dvd drives, try that and see if it affects the speeds

Re: SATA HD speeds slower after dvd drive install

HD is in SATA port 1. DVD is in SATA port 4.

I also noticed in the bios. SATA port 0-3 ( enable or disable ) which toggles Native and Legacy. It was disabled. So I enabled it.

Ran a few runs in HDtune. Back up to 102.8 Avg MB/s transfer with my HD. :) and 200+ MB/s burst.

      Thanks ~

Re: SATA HD speeds slower after dvd drive install

One last question. When I now turn my pc on, I actually hear my DVD drive "initiate" like a servo sound for a split second. This normal?

I don't remember my old IDE drive ever making any sounds unless a CD was in it.

            Just thought this was odd.

            Thanks

Yeap, just depends on the brand and how quiet it is, but generally most of them you can hear if your system is quiet enough.
