  • Booting from USB with ga-x58a-ud3r

I have a USB stick with a bootable windows 7 installer on it. When I put it into my laptop, it's detected fine and the installer starts.

I've tried to get this to work with my new ga-x58a-ud3r but I'm stuck.

I've enabled legacy USB storage - I've set the boot sequence to be:
    USB HDD
    Hard Disk
    Disabled

If I then hit F12 when booting, I get a menu. I select 'Hard Drive' from the list and it lists my drive. I select the drive, and the system boots as far as:

    Verifying DMI pool data ................

Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

Yes, the USB stick is bootable, the partition is active - and it works fine on my Laptop.

I tried formatting it as FAT32 but that didn't make a difference.

I also tried disabling floppy support in the CMOS settings (it was never in the boot order) but that didn't help either.

      Any other ideas?

Re: Booting from USB with ga-x58a-ud3r

It just may not be compatible, some are not, especially larger ones.

You could test this by flashing the BIOS with the USB stick, or attempting/acting like you're going. If you can see the USB stick and BIOS files in there with Qflash then it should be compatible.

Just use F12 to pick the USB to boot from as you have been doing, don't set the 1, 2, 3 boot order to have USB in it, make it HDD, HDD, or CD, HDD, ect

Re: Booting from USB with ga-x58a-ud3r

I never did get it to work. I bought a DVD drive and installed Windows from that.

I suspect the motherboard couldn't boot that particular model of drive. I've tried 6 other machines and they work fine with it.

If somebody from gigabyte wants to try to debug the issue, it's a Sandisk Cruzer 16gb.

wow I have a sandisk cruzer 8GB and it's also stuck on Verifying DMI pool. I tried swapping ram, unplugging HDs, trying 2/4/6 GB, thought that the mobo was faulty. I am going to try with a different USB or a DVD.

Thanks for the info, I'll go try it now.

Doesn't help you, but FYI, a Mushkin 16 Gb boots just fine.
