  • EP45-UD3P cannot boot from USB HDD

I have the Bios SATA RAID/AHCI set to AHCI, the SATA Port0-3 Native Mode set to Enabled, First Boot Device set to USB HDD, USB 1.0 Controller set to Enabled, USB 2.0 Controller set to Enabled and USB Storage Function set to Enabled. I have created two different USB Flash drives that are bootable (I think!). One is a Sandisk 2GB model with a Fat32 format and Command.com, IO.sys, and MSDos.sys installed by the HP USB Format Tool. The second USB Flash drive is an OCZ 4GB model with a Fat32 format and inidux.sys plus a bunch of other stuff installed by the Corsair Ultimate Bootable Flash Drive Utility. The Bios goes right by the Flash drive(s) and boots up W7. I tried the F12 routine and selected USB HDD with the same result. Any clue on what I'm missing? I have no problems booting from the DVD Drives.

Instead of using USB-HDD in your boot order, try USB-ZIP.

Re: EP45-UD3P cannot boot from USB HDD

Flash drive apears just like a normal HD, boot with the flash drive connected then with F12 select Hard Drive+ and select HDD 0-0 or similar to boot from flash drive.

Re: EP45-UD3P cannot boot from USB HDD

        Thanks for the quick response.

        ProfJim - USB-ZIP don't hunt.
Chike - It works. I was wondering what the "+" was for in front of the Hardrive on the F12 display now I know.

But...why doesn't the BIOS handle the USB drives just like a Floppy or DVD or HardDrive? Bug, flaw or just my ignorance? Also, if AHCI is not selected in the BIOS it looks like F12 does nothing at boot time. Is that a correct observation.

Re: EP45-UD3P cannot boot from USB HDD

Read the Hard Disk Boot Priority option in the Advanced Bios Features section (page 49 in my rev 1.0 User's Manual), where you can move individual entries up or down in the list.
It will be interesting to see if you can move your flash drive ahead of the regular hard drive, but still have your standard HDD boot if you don't have a flash drive installed.

Re: EP45-UD3P cannot boot from USB HDD

ProfJim - Neat trick if you can do it. I booted the system with a bootable USB flash drive insterted. The BIOS recognized it as a hardrive and let me move it to the top position. I re-booted the system with the USB flash drive still inserted and the system booted from the flash drive. I then removed the flash drive and rebooted and looked at the harddrives available in the BIOS and as expected the USB flash drive was gone and could not be moved to the top of the list. So it looks like F12 is the best way to get a USB flash drive to boot. Still have to wonder what the heck the USB-HDD is supposed to do?

Re: EP45-UD3P cannot boot from USB HDD

Insert your bootable usb drive, move it to the top of the hdd list, then try booting with a non-bootable usb drive installed to see if you can then boot from your regular hard drive, cdrom or floppy.

This is too convoluted to always need a usb drive installed to preserve its place in the boot list. I just use F12 option to manually select which hard drive I want to boot with.

Did you try booting with your flash drive at the top of the list, then boot without a flash drive installed, and finally boot one last time with your flash drive installed to see if the bios would "magically" remember to boot from the flash drive first?
There's always the option of contacting GB tech support to see what they have to say.
              F12 is the way I go. K.I.S.S.

Re: EP45-UD3P cannot boot from USB HDD

F12 it is. One of these days when I feel like entering into a futile exercise I will call Gigabyte Technical Service and see if they can come up with a good reason why USB-HDD does not work as expected. They'll probably tell me it's because ProfJim helped me overclock the system! By the way, the E8500 will enter and exit sleep at any speed - at least up to 4.3GHz. So...the only difference in the two systems is the Quad CPU and the Video Card (Nvida versus ATI).

Be sure to also ask them why USB Keyboard/Mouse is still disabled by default when you call in to ask about USB-HDD :)
