  • Warm/Hot temperature issue. Idle at 49C/120F. How to be cool?

    Hi all,

Noob here so bear with me. I recently bought the following:

    -i7 920 D0 cpu
    -X58A-UD3R mobo
    -Patriot Viper Extreme RAM PC3 12800 8-8-8-24 (PVT36G1600LLK) Memory
    -Lian Li PC-B25F Case
-Scythe Mugen 2 cpu cooler (mounting required the fan to be raised by about 10mm due to the Viper memory)
-Forgot thermal paste (didn't see it in the Scythe box either!) so bought cheap Spire sp-700 (should be getting IC Diamond soon)
    -Antec Truepower 750w PSU
    -Sapphire HD5850 vapor-x

Installed everything and initially my temps were 82C! Wiped most of the thermal paste off using an isopropyl wipe to leave a tiny amount on the cpu (can nearly see the text on the cpu).

Temps are now stable at 48-50C when only in BIOS. Have recently put settings on XMP Profile1 and DRAM voltage to 1.66v. So the RAM speed is now 1600Mhz.

Have tried setting the fans to either WMP or voltage. No real change. Voltage option takes the temp up to stable 50C.

Even though the Mugen 2 instructions aren't clear I'm very sure I put the fan the right way round. Nevertheless am about to switch it round just in case the diagram was wrong.
Edit: The fan on this difficult-to-install cooler was indeed the right way round. Well at least I am sure now!

CPU cooler is on nice and tight. I have reinstalled it 5 times to make sure. Then saw I could make the back extra strong as the Lian Li case (not sure if all cases do this) as a naked bit on the rearside of the mobo which I used to tighten the screws that side. They're nice and tight now.

My room temp now (midnight) is 27.3C/81.1F

    Any suggestions?

Please let it be a cool one (groan)

    Thanks, GinZ

there's usually arrows stamped into the side of the fan showing airflow direction and fan rotation so you know whichway to install it,or plug it in and hold it to feel which way the airs flowing then you will know, what are your current settings? stock clocks? voltages all on auto?? manually setting 3 main voltages will drop temps alot and they are cpu,qpi/vtt and dram ill tell you what to set them at if you tell me your at stock clocks, even my boards hot at the moment with uk's current hot weather.....are you using coretemp to take temps from the cores? as easytune will be 3-6c cooler than the actual cores

er...sorry bit new with the terminology.. how do I get my stock clock settings?
I dunno if all my voltages are on auto -think they are - except I changed the DRAM to 1.66v and engaged XMP Profile1 in the advanced memory settings.

I've tried playing with the fans - either by voltage or WMP. Not much change - voltage allows the temp to creep up to 50C.

I'm getting all my temps from BIOS. I did try running the Prime95 with RealTemp. However as it hit the 94C mark after only 30secs I got scared my CPU would fry or something. Don't want my new baby to fry!

If you could tell me how to get the temps/settings you want/need I'll be happy to do anything to eliminate maybe simple error's I've made.

you have easytune installed?? look in easytune/tuner/advanced/voltage one and tell me what the cpu voltage is the power on and target,do the same for qpi/vtt voltage it will looklike this the page

^^^ setup your cpu fan speed like that in easytune aswell,it will be better than on auto
you can use voltages for qpi/vtt and cpu same as in pic if you want but set them in the bios as easytune will lock your pc,set cpu voltage to the normal setting in the cpu voltage list,qpi/vtt around 1.3 to 1.35v,start with 1.3v or near to it

EDIT: stock clocks i ment are you running cpu at stock 2.66ghz speed or are you overclocked? im guessing your at stock though

Re: Warm/Hot temperature issue. Idle at 49C/120F. How to be cool?

          Thanks wazza300.

okay in BIOS I have done the following:
CPU Vcore is now set at Normal
          qpi/vtt is now at 1.3v

p.s. the Turbo was set as default so I think it's running at 2.8Mhz

I will now go into windows and install Easytune6. I was advised to avoid it as I would learn much more by doing it directly in BIOS.

However just as a way to see if I can get my temps down then I'll do it. This way maybe I can find out whether I have a problem with either CPU cooler or grease or the way I've installed them etc

erm...how do I post a picture of the Easytune6 window?

p.s.2 am on the thread via my laptop

just use easytune to set your cpu fan speed and to monitor voltages ect, thats all i use it for,any overclocking can be done in the bios, using win7??? use snipping tool in accessories to grab the picture you want then add here by inserting image or upload it to tinypic and copy n paste the html url here, you needed to take pics of cpu and qpi/vtt voltages when on auto but nevermind im sure they will be lower than what they were when set to auto, and yes turbo can be left on its fine

after the BIOS adjustments the temp has dropped to 47C from 48C

I was told that temps should be in the 30s. Is that right?

I'll take the pics and get back to you...

normally around 35-36c,cores around 36-39c when ambient temps are around 15c,but with the hot weather temps will rise along with ambient temps right now for me my temps are 40c in easytune and 40-44c across the 4 cores which is high, normally its around 35c in easytune and 36-39c in coretemp, using win7? look in control panel/system and security/power options and click on "balanced" power saving profile,it will underclock the cpu automatically when its idle and give full speed when its under load saving more temps when its idle

(fan image won't load - will try in next post)

                  voila - baby's first steps

I will take a look at the balanced power saving option. Thanks.

maybe the files are too big for more than one pic per post - they like you better than I ;-)

Edit: my system is already on the balanced power saving option

see the cpu vcore @ 1.3v?? you can lower that alot try with 1.20000v or around 1.18750v in the bios, you shouldnt need that much for stock cpu clocks, set up fan like i have in my pic, move sliders to adjust fan speed unless you have high rpm fan then lower it if its noisy,i have 1700rpm fan for cpu

Re: Warm/Hot temperature issue. Idle at 49C/120F. How to be cool?

The voltage plus fan adjustment options have no doubt worked. Now my PC is at 43C. Fans are too loud though. Will have to see where my balance lies.

I guess I've learnt that low voltage helps to keep temps down.
What are the benefits of having voltages either low or high?

Do you know how I could change my fan speeds without

Thanks for the cooler PC would still like to aim for mid 30s though. Apparently I have a very good CPU cooler...

However it was very tricky to put on this mobo (GA-X58A-UD3R) and with the Patriot Viper Extreme 6GB RAM I had to raise the fan a bit. I wonder whether the benefit of getting the Scythe Mugen 2 is nullified by the fact the fan isn't at the ideal height.

I currently have the fan parallel to the Powerfan. If I moved the fan around to a side where the RAM wasn't then it could be at the ideal height. The clips would allow me to do this. Is it worth a shot?

Edit: ran Prime 95 test for 2 mins and temps went to 82C before I stopped it. What can I do to ensure the temps remain within reasonable limits?

whats your cpu voltage set at?? does that case have the psu at the bottom?? and a fan in the case at the top? if so you could mount the cpu cooler horizontal so it blows hot air out the top of the case??
