Re: Settings for 3.8GHz overclock: i7-920, Gigabyte EX58-UD5 with latest F12 BIOS

Thankyou so much for the settings as posted by wazza300. So far it runs prime95 for over an hour without a BSOD and temps in the low 60C range. I am running 12GB of RAM so I wonder whether I do need to up the qpi/vtt to 1.4V? The 1.4V range is coloured differently in the settings --- anything I should be cautious about?

Also I have had a painful reboot problem from day one. On restart the PC boots nearly fine with the bios settings but on cold boot I get OC/Voltage warnings and it defaults back to 2.8ghz/1066mhz ram etc. Everytime I must enter the bios and reload the profile. Any idea why this is so?

    Great thread and much appreciated.

Update: too confident about the prime95 test. BSOD crash 0x0000012 about an hour into it - I will up the qpi/vtt :)

Could need more qpi/vtt voltage, what are you using at the mo? Try with 1.35v and keep increasing 1.36/1.38/1.4 ect until its stable, you will need more with 12gb,1.4v is safe but you might not need that much, you will need to test

Just trying qpi/vtt @ 1.4V. Now running Prime95 to see if bombs. Your help is much appreciated. Do you have the cold boot problem (resets to 1066mhz/2.8ghz rubbish)? Mine has done this since new and appears random but TOO regular.

Could be bios or ram itself that's causing cold boots,if its stable at 1.4v test with 1.38v,are you setting dram voltage according to ram?and are you running 7 7 7 24 timings? You could try 8 8 8 24 timings and see if it helps with cold boots

It set the DRAM as per module specs 1.5V | 7-7-7-24. But for some reason it now refuses to boot win 7 and hangs but boots on vanilla 2.66ghz bios settings. I just built a new profile as per your 3.8 sheet but at blk 160 / 3.36ghz etc with LLC enabled and its hammering the Prime95 test for 30 minutes without a crash. Should LLC be enabled (I note you disable it)? Whats it do?

The boot problem has been from day one. I changed out the ram once and no change. Sometimes it boots with correct Bclk but skips a stick of memory (i.e. shows 10Gb instead of 12GB on post) etc

Um: What temps can the CPU cores handle --- safe maxed zone?

Llc stop vdroop cpu voltage from dropping when under load,I don't use it so you don't have to use it esp @3.8ghz,could try qpi link speed at 44x,not enough qpi/vtt voltage can cause you to lose ram. I would keep cpu cores under 80c,79c is the limit imo, could try clearing the cmos by removing the mb battery, make note of all oc/bios settings, then load optimised defaults and re enter oc settings

Could try the latest beta bios on main page,it might help cold boots,I don't suffer from cold boots and find latest official f12 to be most stable bios, but your ram is different to mine so maybe it has fixes in newer beta bios, you can flash back if no joy

Wazza - Curious if you've had any experience with ex58-ud5 compliant Raid Cards. I am thinking about offloading this overhead to hardware card running Raid 10 (x8). Any suggestions of products - I am thinking about >http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816151039<

What's the rams rated voltage? It will be printed on the ram, find dram voltage and set according to ram, either 1.5 or 1.66v,next find spd system multiplier and raise it to give you 1600mhz speed, then for timing find timing in bios then choose manual and select quick and type in the timings in like this but according to your ram
                      8
                      8
                      8
                      24
                      Command rate 1t
Lastly find and set qpi/vtt voltage to around 1.3v

hello guys i m a total noob on overclocking...
but i found this guide witch is for my mo and cpu!,so i said what the heck...and i think it work!!!!
in my system info now says:[email protected] 3,8ghz and in my cpuid clearly states core speed 3800.0 mhz mouxaxaaaxa!!!
so i left my computer on all night and the temp stayed around 55-62 c and im on with stock cooler(i renew the thermal paste yesterday tho) are the temp ok??? why my windows exp index didn't come up in rates ??? and *most important what do i need to do now to check that m system is stable???

                            thanks my guys!

oo and 1 other think my ram speed went from 1066 to 800mhz whats that? its ok i guess ha? i do have 12 gb..soo

52-60c at idle? As soon as you stress the CPU it will get too hot the stock cooler will only let you clock to 3.2ghz,you need a good quality aftermarket cooler to clock higher, idle temps should be 39-40c with a good cooler and should ALWAYS stay under 80c
