  • Q9400 + P45-UD3P Overclock

    I'm looking for some help getting my overclock higher. I'm fairly new to overclocking and I'm not quite sure where the problem is. Some of my voltages (i.e. VCore) are not necessarily at the values that are required by 3.60 GHz. In other words, I've raised some of them in order to give myself some overhead as I try to get the clock higher. That being said, my current setup is 24+ hours stable in OCCT and Prime95, with temperatures at ~40 C at full load. 45 C in IntelBurnTest. I'm not entirely sure what I can get this system to on air or when I might start to see diminishing returns due to heat, but I'd like to be able to run 4 GHz without any stability issues. If more information is needed, please let me know and I'll be happy to provide it.

    Try these for 3.8Ghz and see how that does

    You may have to settle for 3.6-3.8 due to the 8 CPU multi, 500 FSB takes a bit to keep stable

      Im just posting this for information the q8400 is basically the same as q9400 except for enabled cache size,although the linked intel sheet above does seem a little fuzzy on cache sizes.
      These settings work long term(using 2 different Q8000 cpu's) however the memory and all other components remain the same.
      Only 4G of memory + its voltage is rated at 1.8-1.9v also.
      If you can get your memory to run at or near its max speed ie using a multiplier higher than 2.00 you may be able to get max pc performance overall at some lower fsb ref speed such as 470 .
      Ie the increased bandwidth may compensate for reduced cpu speed and lower fsb.
      Test YOUR memory and see what speed u can get out of it while understressing the cpu/mch,
      Even test the memory to be sure it will reach 1000mhz easily .i dont mean over that ,sometimes meomory works well at its rated speed and v but doesnt "underclock" so well.
      I get a vdrop on memory while pc is running.2.2v becomes 2.18 ,2.08 becomes 2.05 etc.
      I also found there is no real substitute for volts on cpu/mch /memory in the higher fsb range ,but thats just me.
      What is your cpu VID anyway? use core temp or similar to tell u what it is.for my Q8400 it shows 1.2875v my Q8200 was lower 1.25v I believe.
      In my understanding VID is the maximum voltage a particular cpu has been determined to need to operate at its normal rated speed (in our case 2.6Ghz).
      That may be an incorrect definition,but its the way I look at it :)
      Another common thing is people getting to 450 cpu ref ok ,and then hitting some kind of "wall" with 775 cpu's.
      For me thats the point approx (900mhz) where my memory wont work on 4-4-4-12 timings anymore just something to bear in mind.Well lsd's settings if they work well will give u a good platform.Mine may/may not if you want to go higher.
      Consider the chipset limitations too.
      4ghz,with a x8 multiplier on a c2q (using 500 cpu ref,2000 fsb) and memory on a 2.00 multiplier ,1000mhz with decent memory timings seems to approach the chipsets bandwidth limits on air cooling.
      Unless u go crazy on voltages that is.
      Sure u can get it running a bit faster for testing but u wont see many/any c2q owners running long term above 500 cpu ref on these boards,hey the 775 posters are dying out too :).
      Oh btw your full load temps at 3.6ghz are closer to my idle temps at 4.0Ghz but seem about right.

          Thank you both for the responses and you're welcome for the template up front. I've stalked these forums long enough to at least know what I need to bring to the table. :)

          I tried the settings you posted LSD and was able to boot into windows before blue screen memory dump. I started by upping one voltage at a time, until I could use Windows without crashing out. I went straight to 1.43750 VCore with the intention of just getting stable and then bringing it down once I figure out where my CPU is most efficient/stable. I adjusted CPU termination to 1.300 (this got me into a usable Windows desktop) and was able to run OCCT for anywhere between 5-20 minutes before it gave me an error. I did this a few times, each time getting errors on different cores, but my machine never crashed. My question is, what should be my general approach to troubleshooting? I usually adjust my voltages one tick at a time (in this case I ignored that for my VCore). The problem is, I'm not sure what order I should be adjusting these options, as I'm not sure which ones are logically the first ones to adjust when troubleshooting. I understand that you can't waste time writing a novel about what each one does, and I'm certainly not asking you to. Your help thus far is already greatly appreciated. But if you have any general advice or suggestions, I would love to hear them. I take great pride in thoroughly researching most things I do. Knowing what it is that I'm actually doing here would likely help me to answer my own questions so I don't have to keep bothering you guys :)

          Since some of your suggestions above have a voltage range, I'll post what I currently use to boot into Windows @ 3.80 GHz and we can go from there. For reference, I set my voltages at or as near to the lowest suggestions possible on my mobo and always go up from there in order to eliminate the pitfalls of randomly guessing.

          Oh, and lastly, thank you for clarifying the VID vs. VCore. That is exactly the kind of advice I mentioned above. Everest and CoreTemp state my VID as 1.2375V. That being said, I have just a few general questions:

          1) How does a FSB over 500 relate to the multiplier? Am I limited by a voltage somewhere due to an 8x multiplier?

          2) Now when you mentioned that Intel max is 1.45V actual, does that mean after VDroop?

          3) And what kind of temps should I be shooting for in terms of keeping a decent balance between performance and longevity? I'm not looking to bench my system, I just want to achieve an overclock that maximizes my performance while remaining safe.

            1)Its not so much a V limit at around 500cpu ref(2000 fsb) its the 2000fsb itself.
            The 3 items C2Q cpu<>MCH<>Memory, communicating at 2000mhz needs more V than 1333mhz but you get diminishing returns anyway above 470-480 cpu ref.Each fsb speed increase will probably need much more V than the last.

            Is it a cpu multiplier limit.Yes in a sense it is .My q8200 (x7)only went to 3.5ghz max.My q8400(x8) is on 4ghz.The 9550 and 9650 people used to get around 4.1-4.2+ Ghz max.

            2)according to the spec sheet: it would be 1.45 after vdroop but I personally wouldnt go entering more than 1.45V in bios.
            That was the sort of V i only tried when going for a 2080 fsb test or similar.

            3)Temps well check my sig ,yours at 490-500 cpu ref (stable) should be around that ,perhaps 75C under prime testing, with the room temp at 25c.
            Higher Vcore will up the cpu temp tho.

            On settings:
            For my 490 cpu ref ( linked above): I can get away with 1.30 mch stable if i boost up the cpu v and memory v to 1.39 and 2.12 respectively
            For 500 cpu ref I can get away with 1.38 mch if i boost cpu and memory v to 1.41 and 2.24 respectively.

            The only thing about running such a high cpu v initially is that it may "mask"other settings slightly .cpu shouldnt need 1.44 at that fsb.
            but then again mch is nice and low.

            I find/found OCCT very usefull for fast setup testing,and also its built in graphs for core failures/voltage spikes give instant visual information.
            If you are overclocking your graphics card ,I would turn the oc off while testing.

            What are your gx card and psu?

            Then again those settings^ arent stable under testing.
            Getting a core failure doesnt neccessarily mean its a cpu poblem.
            If you are concerned about memory voltage I would try easing :
            Static tRead Value --------------- 11 --------- : [9]
            out to
            Static tRead Value --------------- 11 --------- : [10]

            Other than that you may have to increase memory voltage around now maybe 1.94/1.96

            How does your memory perform under memtest or dload this

            for a latency/bandwidth check.


            nb : dont try my memory voltages unless you feel you need them ,My memory wont boot at or above 1066mhz without v large voltage, on any multiplier.
            Im assuming your bios dram voltages are marked .2.1v and above(purple..kinda naughty). 2.3v and above(red ,bad for long term use unless your memory is tested at hi voltages.)

              I don't use OCCT, so I can't really comment on how to troubleshoot with it, sorry.

              I meant 500 FSB is pushing it very high for the board itself and the NB, if you had a higher CPU multi you would not need such a high FSB, that is all I meant.

              As for the 1.45 Max per Intel, that means anytime idle or load, after that physical damage "can occur"

              You want load temps to stay under 70-75C ideally

                This is my SS just 5loops passed Intel burn test standard level with Q9400 3,8GHz, for benchmarking only but no stable yet for daily, which is vcore is too high.
