  • E8500/HD5830 OCCT Problems?

I'm back with another system to keep you guys busy! I put the E6750 CPU back in the abit IP35 Pro MB with the 4 GB of Corsair ram and will let it run at a reasonable OC. I went and bought the E8500 for the EP45-UD3P MB like someone suggested and thought I'd be happy. But... I had to have a new Video Card so I purchased the ATI/AMD HD 5830 card and installed the Catalyst 10.3 drivers. I had to install the latest version of ET6 since the one I had did not like the new video card drivers. It also appears the OCCT does not like the new video card since it crashes very quickly with core failures and/or the BSOD. The attached BIOS settings are pretty much the default settings since I wanted to make sure I had a good starting point. I was a little concerned that the Core Temps varied by as much as 7C but I guess that is the nature of the E8500 based on the various internet threads?

The first issue I would like some help with is - am I the only guy that is having problems with OCCT and a HD 5830 video card? I ran IBT for 10 passed with no problems and I let Prime 95 go for 4 hours with no issues.

    Re: E8500/HD5830 OCCT Problems?

Cancel that request. Apparently, OCCT gets caught up in the stuff left behind when you uninstall the Nvida drivers. I ran CCleaner and deleted all the dead entries left over in the registry and OCCT now runs for 60 minutes with no problems. So the only issue pending is the 7 or 8 degree C difference between Core 0 and Core 1 reported by OCCT although the maximum temperature reported for Core 0 by OCCT was only 41C.

      So all good now then?

If so great to hear!! Post back anytime if you need help with anything

You can likely use tRD 6-7, and less MCH Core voltage as well, just FYI in regards to your settings

        Re: E8500/HD5830 OCCT Problems?

Here we go. Is the Core0, Core1 temperature variation normal? The E6750 and the Q9550 Core temperatures were always pretty close. Why can I lower the tRD to 6-7 with the E8500 and I could/did not with the E6750 and the Q9550 OC's? Same memory and motherboard. Also, make it easy on me, if I want to do a modest OC of the E8500 (400 X 9.5 = 3.8) how much more Vcore, if any, should I give it? Do the same rules apply for the VTT as the E6750 and Q9550?

          Re: E8500/HD5830 OCCT Problems?

Yes, core temp variations are normal, sometimes closer together (3-5) and other times further apart (3-12). It all depends on your heatsink mounting, how flat your heatsink and or CPU IHS is, and what the cores are doing since they are not always working on the same things.

You may have had stuck cores on the 6750/9550, or flatter IHS on the CPU's, or a better mount of the heatsink. Many variables can cause this, nothing to much to worry about though.

I say you can lower tRD because you can at that FSB, and it will help your performance a lot!

I would say maybe 1.26-1.38 for 3.8Ghz, all depends on your CPU, and what other voltages such as PLL and Vtt you use.

Vtt only needs to be kept under vcore, and for 8500 try to keep it under 1.38/1.4, you really shouldn't need more than 1.34 or so for 400 FSB if that.

            Re: E8500/HD5830 OCCT Problems?

This thing is pretty amazing. It is running "stable" at 400FSB or 3.8MHz. I did change the tRD from 8 to 7 and at least 3dMark Vantage did not run any faster but I guess that is more biased to the video performance. However, when I try to jump to FSB 422 or 4.0GHz by increasing the Vcore 2 notches and increasing the VTT one notch bad things happen. W7 boots and after a few minutes gives me the BSOD. Change the tRD back to 8? Also, I tried changing the memory multiplier to 2.66D with a tRD of 9 and all of the other settings the same as posted below and OCCT report a Core1 error after only 10 minutes! Any suggestions on why it don't like 2.66D @ FSB 400? I was ready to be happy at 3.8MHz and wanted to run the memory at rated 1066 speed.

              Re: E8500/HD5830 OCCT Problems?

Give me the settings you are trying to use at 422 FSB and I can advise back

tRD most likely will need to be 9 at 422 FSB using D strap multi's, this might be your only problem

                Re: E8500/HD5830 OCCT Problems?

I went back to the go old reliable 2.40B strap and have this thing running at 4.0GHz with the attached settings. I have not put ProfJim's memory timings in yet but everything else seems ok? For some reason when I try the 2.66D setting with a FSB of 400 and a tRD of 9 it don't like it.

Since it got to 4GHz relatively easily (Vcore of <1.35V and a max temperature of 52C) how much more do these things have have without using a voltage that is too high for 24-7 usage?

                  Re: E8500/HD5830 OCCT Problems?

Some memory just does not play well with the D strap, same applies with B strap some do not like it either.

It could also be that you are using too much MCH Voltage, not enough memory voltage or Vtt voltage, and or you are also not setting driving strength profiles. There is much to play with if you want to use 2.66D, if you do let me know because I am fairly sure your Mushkin's will do fine on the D strap

                    Re: E8500/HD5830 OCCT Problems?

                    Lsdmeasap,
This thing is running stable at 4GHz with the 2.40B strap. I'm almost happy for now. I will try to get it to run the memory at 1066+ but I'll save that for another day.

                    ProfJim,
I am using almost the exact same settings you got me to on the Q9550 and the E6750 systems. The only differences are: the E8500 is running on the latest BIOS FE and the Q9550 is still on the FD version, the CPU Reference, MCH Reference, MCH/DRAM Reference DRAM Termination are all set to AUTO on the E8500 (formerly the E6750 system) and not on the Q9550, and the E8500 system is using the ATI 5830 video card. I am about to update the BIOS on the Q9550 system to FE. Is there any reason I can't go to AUTO on the above settings on both systems? JUST AN ASIDE, THE E8500 SYSTEM RUNNING AT 4GHz WILL ENTER AND EXIT SLEEP MODE WITH NO PROBLEMS! I don't know if the FE BIOS will "fix" the Q9550 system or if it is the ATI video card or just a quirk with the Q9550 but I will know in a day or two.

I answered my own questions - upgrading to the FE BIOS did not help with the wake from sleep problem - so I guess it is the ATI 5830 card that works better than the Nvida GTS 250 card or the Q9550 has a quirk that does not allow it to wake up after 3.7 GHz. Also, ProfJim we ended up on the Q9550 system with .825V for the Reference Voltages driven by the CPU Termination Voltage so that is a notch or two higher than the AUTO setting. Since it is/was stable under the FD BIOS I should leave well enough alone?

At the risk of getting in trouble I'll ask the same question again - is there any way to check/view the Reference Voltages that are being set by the BIOS when they are left on AUTO? It looks like I have to go on faith if I leave them set to AUTO which is OK on the E8500 system since it is stable at 4 GHz and it looks like that is the recommended way to go.

                          Re: E8500/HD5830 OCCT Problems?

If your system passes IBT/LinX (10 passes) and Prime95 or OCCT extended stability tests (12 - 24 hours) with AUTO reference volt settings, there is no need to manually tweak the reference volt settings. When you upgrade or downgrade your bios version, there is no guarantee that the previous stable bios settings will still be stable with a newer or older bios version. I recommend that you repeat your stability tests with the newer FE bios.

To further complicate things, if you moved all your hardware to another, identical motherboard and bios, your previous stable bios settings might not be completely stable on the newer motherboard.

Most E8xxx systems require MCH Ref to be set one of more steps lower when overclocking with ~ 4.0GHz or higher speeds, using Lsdme's reference volt tweaking procedure.

I've seen many S3 sleep issues with systems in the forum. I've had no problems with enabling hibernate mode with both of both of my GB systems. For some reason, using S3 with my systems left my video card fan running at 100% with when S3 sleep mode kicked in. To avoid any possible problems with my older systems, I only use the "turn off monitor" power saving option.

Your earlier problems with your new video card were probably due to software leftovers after you uninstalled your previous video drivers and software. The following information is from the Driver-Sweeper download page at guru3d.com:

Guru3D - Driver Sweeper (Setup) download from Guru3D.com

                          Software Description
Guru3D - Driver Sweeper is a fast tool to remove driver leftovers from your system. It's very important to remove your drivers on a proper way, because driver leftovers can cause problems like stability and startup problems. You can use it if you want to update/remove drivers from your system.

                          Standard version Driver Cleaner
                          How to use ?
Guru3D - Driver Sweeper is very easy to use. You only have to select the drivers you want to clean.
The best way to clean drivers is to first uninstall the drivers using the official uninstallers, reboot in Safe Mode and run Guru3D - Driver Sweeper. However, rebooting and not going into Safe Mode also works, but can cause some files not to be cleaned.

What can it be used for ?
The current supported drivers are NVIDIA (Display and Chipset), ATI (Display), Creative (Sound), Ageia (PhysX), MMouse and Realtek (Sound).

All the settings are saved in an ini file. Nothing is created in the registry, so it's possible to use it as a portable program. Log files can be saved to the harddisk and viewed as well. You can find the logs under the Tools menu.

                            Re: E8500/HD5830 OCCT Problems?

                            ProfJim,
Good to hear from you. I went nuts and built a system for the E8500 since I had an excuse to give one of my wife's friends one of our computers!

I did run the Guru3D Driver Sweeper early on and that solved most of the problems. I just went one step too far and deleted the PhysX stuff which 3DMark Vantage needs. I thought it was part of the Nvida driver install.

Yes, I'll have to step back and run the stability tests on the Q9550 system since I updated the BIOS to FE. The new BIOS did not solve the Sleep Wake-up problem but the Hibernate function continues to work just fine.

The E8500 system runs everything I throw at it - OCCT, IBT(10 Passes) and Prime95 for 12+ hours so it probably has more GHz to go at least untill I get to the top of the Mushkin 2.40B strap. The E8500 system will Sleep and Wake-up without a problem. One more request, could you point me to Lsdme's reference volt tweaking procedure. It sure would be nice if there was a program like ET6 that would show what the reference voltages were actually running after being set by the BIOS. I got on this reference kick since we spent some time playing with the reference voltages trying to get 4+GHz out of the Q9550 and yet the E8500 and just runs 4GHz on AUTO but i'm sure I'll get in trouble with it too if it is there to had!

Easytune will show you current ref values, but it's easy to tell you what they are if you leave them in auto.

They will be exactly what you see in the BIOS set for Auto, based off the voltages they reference.
