  • GA-MA790FX-DQ6 Phenom II X6 (Thuban) support

I'm very disappointed to see N/A, meaning Not Supported here, at the CPU Support List for this board. But it is not clear what it actually means:

    1. No, the X6 won't work in this board, but the support is planned and the BIOS update will be available soon.
    2. Yes, the X6 will work in this board, but official support is not planned.
    3. No, the X6 won't work in this board and the support is not planned.

As a concerned owner of this rather expensive board I would like to get clear and precise official statement from GIGABYTE on this issue.

Please ask here, and let us know what they tell you:
      GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Technical Service Zone

Normally though this means they have tested and found it is currently not possible and likely will not be in the future BIOSes either. Not always the case, but generally this is what N/A means.

See here though, similar board I think and they got a x6 working

Hello. Is there any news on this? Something sure? Will there be a new BIOS update for this board?

I dont see any MB with an AMD SB600 Southbridge chipset supporting a 6X PhenomII cpu.

Otherwise you will not see CPU's wich is under testing in this list.

On the last link there is MSI K9A2 CF, which is 790X/SB600, I believe.

That makes me wonder if the decision NOT to support the X6 on 790FX/SB600 boards is deliberate

No, not at all. GA-MA790XT-UD4P Is AM3/790X/SB750, while GA-MA790FX-DQ6 is AM2+/790FX/SB600.

A lot of AM2+/AM3 boards with SB7xx do support six core CPUs, but only one (that I'm aware of) AM2+ with SB600 supposedly does, namely, MSI K9A2 CF.

Yes, I guess they decide not to update the BIOS because the board is kind of old and it cannot be found anywhere for sale (=> they won't win anything). Too bad that this days everything is pure marketing.

Besides, the support department gives improper answer regarding the subject, I have already sent 3 inquiries and every time they avoided to give a clear answer, just wait and see. Wait for what, I only asked a confirmation for those N/A listed over there, an yes or a no... I guess they don't even read the questions. Just my point of view...

Interesting, as stated in this thread , ASUS seems to have added thuban support for M3A32-MVP DELUXE board, which is very similar to GA-MA790FX-DQ6 (AM2+/790FX/SB600).

                      Waiting for GIGABYTE's turn.

They already made the "big" move, when they put the Thubans as N/A. Like you said, and I also believe, their decision was deliberate. If there is gonna be any BIOS update for the board, it will pass many months until it is made... but it's not gonna happen.

PS: I just took an 965 BE C3 today. For now, I'll stick to this one, until Bulldozer is gonna come out. -1 to Gigabyte for this.

                          GIGABYTE's turn: F7G

                          GIGABYTE TECHNOLOGY Socket AM2+ - AMD 790FX - GA-MA790FX-DQ6 (rev. 1.0)
                          (download it at GA-MA790FX-DQ6 (rev. 1.0) - GIGABYTE )

So thuban is FULLY SUPPORTED now. (still marked as beta though)

All praise gigabyte engineers, all blame gigabyte techsupport for (very) poor P/R and misinformation

I'll be looking for a CPU upgrade soon... :)

Thanks for posting, zzb. I used not to check their website anymore, since final answer was that ugly N/A in the list... Still, great update though, even it's far too late. I guess this new BIOS update should deal with 1075T and 970BE too. Somebody knows for sure?

Yes the Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 with the F8I Beta Bios does
support the Hex core Phenom II's. I am running the 965 BE phenom II
right now on the F8I bios no problems. Plan to upgrade to a hex core
Phenom II after they go End-Of-Life and drop in price.
