  • Q6700 + X48-DS4 Overclocking drama

hi guys, ive just been reading this thread and have a similar system myself. i cannot for the life of me get any overclock to stick no matter what i try. only real difference is i have 8gb of ddr2 800mhz ram and 4870 in crossfire.

issue is once i change the host setting to 320 for example and try and change the ram multi to resemble 800mhz, save + exit. it will post right up until the memory test to which it will then shut down and revert back to stock settings. it's really quite frustrating.

any info would be greatly appreciated.

Which thread were you refering to?
What is the board revision and BIOS version? Please provide a link to RAM specs.
Try 333MHz FSB with x8 CPU Ratio, and 2.40B memory multiplier.

hi, thanks for the reply :)

the RAM link is here i have 4x2Gb inserted at present

also the motherboard has F3B bios on it at the moment and the revision is 01 according to CPUZ.

i did briefly play about with a lower multiplier setting but not in any great depth, ive basically left it at 10x and changed everything else. i will try your suggestion

      thanks again :)

Rev 1.3 is the only one found on GB site, so it's probably it.
Also set MCH OverVoltage +0.1 - +0.15v, that may be needed for 8GB RAM, and also to loose the timings for now.

ok, back from trying your suggestion. no luck again. i fear im stuck running this system at stock settings until next upgrade. i cant help but think it's to do with the RAM. ive got the timings set to auto which are stated at being 5-5-5-12 in the bios. if i manually change them to 4-4-4-12 and save it causes a constant series of restarts to which i have to clear CMOS to get it back again. im not sure if this is faulty RAM or not, in the manual it states that some boards may require the timings to be set manually.

ive also tried removing all but 1 stick of the RAM to no avail and running only 4gb in dual channel which also gave me the negative result.

            Re: Q6700 + X48-DS4 Overclocking drama

The memory won't operate at 4-4-4-12 even with stock settings?
Could you post a screen capture of MemSet main(click >>) and SPD(click spd) windows?
You can download MemSet from http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/late...y-tools-30530/

EDIT: check DDR voltage in PC Health, maybe it is a little low and could have some more

sure, here is that screen grab you we're looking for. sorry for the large white section i had to use paint as i haven't installed photoshop as yet. is this what you were refering to?

I use paint myself, you can resize the image selecting image attributes.
Are Advanced Timing Control set manually or those are just the values you see as defaults for auto settings?

                  Re: Q6700 + X48-DS4 Overclocking drama

at the moment that's all set to auto. the only way my PC will even boot into windows is with everything on auto and defaults. it's quite frustrating.

when i first purchased this PC and built it i was able to get a couple of working overclocks, i had it running at 3.2ghz for about 6months but it always felt a little unstable. anyway after that i reset it all back to stock settings and the PC ran almost twice as quick, however since then refuses to accept any alterations. im really only going on about it because when i researched all these parts i had in mind that once i had it for a year or so i'd go the overclocking route. and now its been about 18months and it refuses overclocking. im not sure if in my previous attempts at overclocking i've done damage.

                    tRD autoo too?
It's weird that SPD shows tRFC 42 and actual applied is 52, was Performance Enhance standard or turbo when you made the screen capture?
Lets try to take it step by step, does memory fail with 4-4-4-12 timings at stock settings too?

Performance Enhance was and still is set to "standard"

when im in the bios this:
                      Standard Timing Control
                      CAS Latency Time (tCL)............:4
                      DRAM RAS# to CAS# (tRCD).........:4
                      DRAM RAS# Precharge (tRP).........:4
                      Precharge Delay (tRAS)............:12

was manually set by me. i can resize a picture i took with my digital camera. please not all these settings where in the middle of me playing around in the bios. at present everything is running at default.

Could you check all DIMMs SPD with MemSet and see if tRFC is the same for all of them?
Do these settings work at stock 266MHz FSB?

                          ok, DIMM 1 & 4 show 42.
                          DIMM 2 & 3 show 51

and if your refering to the 4-4-4-12 changes i made in the picture, i'll have to go and check that.

is it possible to get this software to show the SPD for all 4 slots in different windows? sorry ive never used this software before. to get those numbers i was just using the drop down menu.
