  • Wolfdale Overclocking with the GA-EP45-UD3P

    Hi there fellas,

taking the suggestion from Chike, I decided to create this topic hoping someone will help me out overclocking my E8400 Wolfdale. After searching and reading a little bit, I've came to this bios setup I'm posting you guys right now. My current goal right now is holding a fully stable 4GHz overclock.

Memories: Mushkin Enhaced Blackline 2x2gb PC8500 (996599) @ 5-5-5-15 @ 2.1v <--- high performance memory generally is rated to run at higher voltage than standard memory. The pink color is okay.

CPU Vcore --------------- 1.225V ---- : [1.425V] <--- this is too high, under 1.35V and lower will work okay. Check with CPU-Z program for a voltage reading.

My understanding is that you have not achived a stable OC so far so maybe start with 400MHz FSB and try to work it up.
Uf you have not began by loading optimized defaults do so and then re-apply your settings, including RAID configurations and disk order, and any others you have made.
1.35v should be plenty, VTT(CPU Termination) 1.24-1.28, and both CPU and MCH Reference on auto, Driving Strength 1066 for both channels, and see if you pass any of the primes.
FFT size may indicate where the problem is so remember which failed in case it does.
Monitor core temperatures with RealTemp or CoreTemp, it's what we normaly use when reporting temperatures.

EDIT: Orthos fails post the FFT size that caused it also.

Thanks for the tips. I've changed the CPU Vcore for 1.30-1.35V and still couldn't get anything stable at all. However I am reading that topic, looks indeed promising.

5 minutes orthos don't mean much but it is a start.
I don't believe the memory will do 1200, anyway I suggest you will live memory tweaking untill we get the CPU stable at your desired OC.
Try using 2.40B multiplier instead 2.66D, this useually works up to 450MHz FSB for DDR-1080 settings.
If this works you may try increasing FSB to 425MHz.
Run small and large FFT for 1-2 hours each then blend for 6+ hours.
Post your setting wether it fails or succeed, and we will see how to move on.

            Hey there Chike,

so, the best I got this far was 425 FSB.

Right now I'm stuck on 430 FSB. The voltages are still the same I've used with both 400 and 425 FSB.

            Any recomendations?

            Here's Orthos' error numbers:
@31 seconds, small FFTs: was 0.5, expected 0.4
            @55 seconds, blended: was 0.5, expected 0.4

Re: Wolfdale Overclocking with the GA-EP45-UD3P

You may need more vcore, try to enable LLC(Load Line Calibration) and see if it help.
                  Next try 1.30-1.32v VTT.
If both are not enough, set VTT back to 1.28v and try to tweak MCH and CPU references, see http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/how-...asytune-29746/
                  The short version:
                  1. Set VTT to 1.2v
                  2. Set MCH or CPU reference to the desired value.
                  3. Set VTT to it's original/desired value.

Default MCH and CPU reference for your board is 0.760v @ 1.2v VTT.
Start with MCH reference. Try lowering it 1-3 steps below default using the method above, if it doesn't make things better try 1-3 steps above default.
Then CPU reference, begin with 1-5 steps above, then below if not stable.
One or both of the references may require tweaking.
If not stable, try the above with 1.3v and 1.32v VTT.

On a side note: memory timings are quite loose but leave them be foe now untill you resolve stability. Standard timing 5-5-5-15 should be possible.

Re: Wolfdale Overclocking with the GA-EP45-UD3P

                      Hey there Chike,

I've just enable LLC and it ran Orthos (430 FSB) for about 1 hour in all three modes.

Now I'm heading to 440 FSB and got the exact error output I was having before (was 0.5, expected 0.4). So I started tweaking the references as you've recomended and here's the output I've got from Orthos:

                      CPU Termination: [1.280V]
                      CPU Reference: [Auto]
                      MCH Reference: [0.810V]
@10s; small FFTs: "was 0.46875, expected less than 0.4"
@05s; small FFTs: "was 0.5, expected less than 0.4"
@07s; large FFTs: "was 0.49609375, expected less than 0.4"
@31s; large FFTs: "was 0.5, expected less than 0.4"

                      CPU Termination: [1.280V]
                      CPU Reference: [0.810V]
                      MCH Reference: [Auto]
@24s; small FFTs: "was 0.5, expected less than 0.4"
@07s; small FFTs: "was 0.5, expected less than 0.4"
@21s; large FFTs: "was 0.5, expected less than 0.4"
@10s; large FFTs: the system crashed (BSOD)

                      Thanks a lot man.

                        Hi there man,

well I've tryed that exact setting and couldn't get the PC powered on. I've changed the ram multi to 2.40B and it did powered on, however it rebooted during Windows boots. Again, I've changed to 2.00B and it didn't post.

                        Thanks in advance.

                          What vcore were you trying?

I gave a lot of ranges there, so you saying you tried does not help me to help you get going. I need to know what all settings you tried exactly.

Ahh, what was the BSOD code? It looks like this 0x00000101 for example, and should be in the middle left side of the screen on BSOD.

Only the last three numbers matter to me, if you can catch what those are that would be great before I advise back on what might help.
