    GA-P55A-UD4P
    Intel X25M-80 Boot Drive
    2x Western Digital WD1001FALS Caviar Black 1TB

BIOS is set for AHCI mode

My 1TB D:\ and E:\ drives keep disappearing after waking up the system. Not everytime but quite often (maybe 15-25% of the time). All three drives show up as ejectable in the removable devices list.

I would appreciate any tips or ideas, thanks

The only solution is to reboot, they do not show up in the disk manager even after rescanning for disks.

are you using the latest bios? maybe use latest beta bios, look on main page for latest one make sure you select the right one for your board, then read on how to flash using q-flash heres the latest beta bios for your board it will probably have the sleep resume fix in it

Re: 2nd/3rd Hard Drives Disappear After Sleep

My original settings were to go to sleep after 30min and power down the hard drives after 15min.

I'm currently using F8, the latest release. I'll try a beta if I don't get any other suggestions. Is there any way to specify they are not removeable?

I've set the disks in the power configuration to not power down because I was having trouble getting them to spin back up after they powered down and some apps that needed to read/write data on those drives would hang.

i cant think of anything else other than latest beta bios,i know it saves the sleep status to your ram then resumes from it,the ud5 had a long issue resuming from sleep which didnt get solved untill a new bios came out so thats my best advice + betas will have latest fixes months before a final bios is released

Ok, thanks, I flashed to the one you linked and I'll give it a try for a while. I left most of the BIOS settings at default this time, just set the SATA ports to AHCI.

Re: 2nd/3rd Hard Drives Disappear After Sleep

After rebooting I have C:\ and E:\ only. That's never happened before always had C/D/E and would lose D/E after sleeping.

However, the drive was there, just had to assign it a drive letter.

                Hmm, odd to hear.

What ports do you have all your drives connected to, color and # please?

Re: 2nd/3rd Hard Drives Disappear After Sleep

I can't give an exact answer but I avoided the auxilliary type ports SATA3, etc. I was trying for 0-ssd, 1-dvd, 2-1TB, 3-1TB but I mixed them up so I think the ssd was 2.

Then I tried disabling everything I didn't need (SATA3, USB3, floppy, serial/parallel, 2nd ethernet). The only one I didn't disable was the gigabyte sata which I wanted to because it tries to detect devices there at every boot up. I also re-arranged the order of the hard drives for boot up since the ssd was not first.

Anyway, after flashing to the beta bios, I didn't redo all of the above changes, just set to ahci mode and a couple other changes (usb as 3rd boot device and mouse power on). So maybe that changed the device numbering and that is why Windows lost its drive letter.

                        OK, keep us posted.

Just so you know, my advice to you is this. Put your OS hard drive on SATAII_0 and your CD/DVD Drive on SATAII_5, with your other storage drives anywhere in the middle.

the fix, install intel AHCI drivers. the MS ahci drivers have this apparent bug in them that causes certain hard drives (especially large ones, 1tb+) to be disconnected upon waking from sleep.

Because you have the intel x-25m ssd, i suggest the Rapid Storage Technology 9.6
                          http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sear...ntel%C2%AE+RST)

                          mentioned from tweaktown ssd article:
TweakTown ’s Solid State Drive Optimization Guide Introduction :: TweakTown

Update (03/29/2010): Intel has recently released a new driver that allows Windows 7’s TRIM instructions to be passed through the Southbridge. The new driver is labeled "Rapid Storage Technology 9.6" and it can be found here. These drivers are also able to pass TRIM commands to RAID 0 and RAID 1 arrays.
My early testing with the new RST 9.6 driver shows that the drive is much faster than the Microsoft Windows 7 AHCI driver whilst also being just as stable. Testing has also shown a significant performance increase in many real world tests with a significant boost in the 4K range.
So you might as well upgrade anyways as now it supports TRIM, even in RAID 0 and RAID 1 arrays.

I just got in a WD 2tb and had the same problem with the msachi driver, updated to the driver above and it seems fine now.

It happened again so the bios did not fix the issue. I will change the ports. I guess I could also go back to IDE mode. Apparently AHCI mode is not necessarily the best thing.

Ranova, thanks for the tip about the MS AHCI driver, that sounds promising but I'm a bit leary of Intel's drivers after the problems they had a few years back with their accelerator/matrix drivers. I'll probably try that this weekend.

I would not use IDE mode, especially that you have an intel SSD. It wont pass TRIM commands with IDE mode, it requires AHCI or for you to manaully do the cleanup...

After a week of using the Intel driver and sleeping my desktop every night, my 2tb WD has not disappeared. When I was using the MSAHCI driver, it would disappear 100% of the time after waking up from sleep. So it is a working solution, and seems to have zero downsides (SSD speeds are still great using AS SSD Benchmark) - even Tweaktown's SSD article seemed to recommend it.
