HEY ALL ! strange thing... When overclocking my i7 930 to 4.2 ( 191x22 ) , windows does recognize 6gb of ram , BUT ONLY 2.00 GB USABLE. This is with the ram under 1600, 1528 to be exact. My bro's chip dont have this wall however i seem to be running much much cooler. READ BELOW REGARDING THE RAM ISSUE.

As of last nite and lots of coffee, we have 4004 mhz (182x22) DRAM @ 1456mhz (182 x8 ) using 1.3vcore and 1.175 qpi (stock) in BIOS, underload cpu-z is picking up 1.264vcore and a 5-run IBT w/16 threads using "very high" yields me a high temp of 73c or 75c for a 24/7 setting.

The last chip would need alot of voltage and get into the low 90's @ 4 ghz, i am happy with it so far... Just this 1600 mhz ram issue and 4.2ghz issue is bothering me. Again, the last chip would get my stock 1333 ocz ram to 1750 stable using Maxed out QPI and 1.66vdimm. I have tried upping the QPI and vdimm to 1.66 with no luck. Reads 6 gigs/ 2 usable.

Bottom line, if the ram is clocked over or 1600 mhz or the cpu is clocked at 4.2, windows/cpu-z/etc recognize 6gb, but only 2 usable. BIOS IS F11

This is likely your settings are a bit off. Meaning uncore, QPI/Vtt, IOH, Vdimm.

Please post for me your full settings you are trying in a template, link is in my signature.

Nice to see you Mr. LSD, when i get off work i will do. Heres a brief breakdown off the top of my head
      uncore- 16x ( 17x always fails )
      qpilink- 36x
      qpi/vtt- 1.175 upto 1.4
      vdimm- 1.66

I wont stop til i get my RAM over 1600.
My bro's did a similar thing, he had increased his vcore a notch and everything came back to normal .

        Re: i7 930 bug

Hey, i know this is off topic and i could not find the exact thread regarding SSD setup within the BIOS. Under integrated peripheralsm there are two settings which should be changed. One is IDE mode to AHCI and i could not figure out the other thru trial and error. The system would get halfway into windows then give some funky BSOD. Advise? thanks!

          Re: i7 930 bug

you need to install the ahci drivers for it to work usually before you install the os,if you want to use ahci youll have to do a reg tweak you wontsee much difference in performance from ide mode

          reg tweak for win7 only

          1.Exit all Windows-based programs.
2.Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
3.If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
4.Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesM sahci

5.In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
6.In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
7.On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.
After this you’ll have to restart your computer, go to BIOS and enable AHCI. When you log in to Windows again, you’ll notice the installation of drivers for AHCI. Another restart will be required to finish the driver installation.

              Re: i7 930 bug

I have done this before , back in september. My read speeds went from 265 to 235. Not happy. This is with 15gb free and trimmed. I dunno if you remember me LSD, but i was always bugging you months ago about my setup and you were always great to me. Ima do some research and see the exact procedure. I know it involved uing IDE, doing somthing, then switching back . Anybody else care to advise? thanks again for the help all.

                Re: i7 930 bug

Windows 7 should have natively installed AHCI drivers, my Win7 64 ultimate setup did so without any problem with my X58A-UD5 board. I'm not sure of the result if you didn't have AHCI enabled when you installed the OS. If this is a fresh install you may want to just reinstall it with AHCI enabled, Win7 install should see the drive and you should be okay from there, if it doesn't then the earlier post may be your best route to enable it after installation, if reinstalling is not a big deal for you, you should enable AHCI then run the install, you shouldn't need the driver from the CD to do the install necessarily but you may need to set up the drivers on a thumb drive ahead of time.

As far as your memory issue, on my setup I could not get my Corsair RAM to run at 1600 at certain overclocks due to the multiplier and had to run it at 1580. You might want to look at Memtest86 and compare the memory bandwidth that it reports between settings, even underclocked at 1580 the memory throughput was higher than it was at 1600 at a lower QPI, since you are also modifying the memory controller when you overclock your effective memory speed may be greater than you think, the fact that you're setting it to 1600 doesn't tell you the whole story and you may actually be overclocking it.

                  Re: i7 930 bug

Just what the Dr. ordered . Cannot thank you all enough. Read speeds back up to 257 mb/sec and writes are at 90mb/sec . Still working on the RAM issue though, it wouldn't bother me so much if i had not had it running at 1750mhz on my previous chip up from 1333 stock. It will boot over 1600 mhz and show 6gb, but only 2 usable. Anybody ever encounter this?

Nice to see you fixed your read speeds!

Ya I remember helping you a bit. Let me know what memory issues you are having now and I can help, post your full settings while you are at it if you think you need me to advise back.

Before we get started, does this 6GB showing as 2GB happen at stock as well or only when overclocked? Are you SURE you do not have any bent CPU socket pins?

                      Re: i7 930 bug

Only when overclocked. If the Ram is close to 1600mhz it does this. If it is under 1600, but the CPU is clocked over 4.1ghz it will show 6 installed and 2 usable. I am unsure of bent CPU socket pins. Would need to take a really really close look at it. I was thinking of swapping my RAM with my bro's to see what happens... If something is bent, hell it gives me a reason to get a new board lol. Never had this problem with my last i7, and im 100 % sure i had installed the cpu spot on. Any other ideas? I mite even just buy another CPU and board to see whats what.

                        Re: i7 930 bug

Yes, you would need to remove the CPU and look at the pins under a good bright light. Be CAREFUL if you do this, a few people in the past have actually bent pins trying to check!

Sounds like you may be ok there though since it all shows up when not overclocked, but it is worth checking out if you have the time.

Different memory test is a good idea, it very well could be faulty memory.

If different memory does the same, it is either a bent pin/pins, or your settings which I can help with. I can cause this anytime on the fly with incorrect settings, so it can be easily caused by that.

See Eva2000's post here for more info on how settings can cause these issues

                          Re: i7 930 bug

Heres the thing though, my bro's identical setup (besides his board being rev. 1.6 does the same thing only he can clock his memory over 1600mhz. A small vcore bump fixed it.

Ram swap first, then check pins, then go over settings. I highly doubt its the settings but you would very well know better than i would. Let me put a template together and have ya have a look. Thanks LSD once again.
