  • Trying to get stable with a new OS[W7x64Pro]

Hi everyone! I'm not very good at understanding overclocking, or at least I'm trying to learn, but I'm new(b) at this and could use some assistance getting my PC stable.

I'm having an overclocking issue switching to W7x64Pro. I can use my settings in XP32 to achieve 3825MHz-vcore1.343, VTT1.28, CPU Ref set to .76. and pass P95 and IBT all day long. However, when I boot into W7x64 and try to stress with the 3825MHz XP32 settings, I fail Intel Burn Test v2.4 no matter what settings I have the vcore and corresponding VTT's at! It uses the settings from XP @ 3600MHz and is stable, but the 3825MHz settings from XP are not passing test on Windows 7. If I can get windows7 to boot and not BSOD(but IBT does fail) during an Intel Burn Test, P95 will close shortly after starting it.

I've tried going up through the vcores with the FSB set at 425MHz. Skipping one vcore setting a test sequence, starting at vcore 1.32500 and trying every (VTT)termination voltage -.05 of vcore, to -.12 of vcore(example; 1.34575vcore, possible VTT of 1.24[0.1057] to 1.28[0.0657]) It was a lot of testing and I have not found anything over 420MHz to be stable in W7x64Pro. Just can't get the CPU to OC stable at 3825MHz?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

This is when step(run) completion time in IBT started to slow down. !0 Steps a run1

PASS 10 runs IBT @ 58.317 seconds, 25.177 GFlops average run
    417*9
    VID1.25 vcore1.27500 CPUIDvc1.248
    VTT1.22

PASS 10 runs IBT @ 58.864 seconds, 24.828 GFlops average run
    419*9
    VID1.25 vcore1.27500 CPUIDvc1.248
    VTT1.22

Since I noticed that the runs were taking longer to complete, but were checking error free I decided to bump the vcore and nothing else.

PASS 10 runs IBT @ 59.45 seconds, 24.786 GFlops average run
    419*9
    VID1.25 vcore1.28750 CPUIDvc1.264
    VTT1.22

Notice the difference? Now I'll bump up the vc again, no other settings.

PASS 10 runs IBT @ average run 22.14-GFlops in 66.50 sec,
    419*9
    VID1.25 vcore1.29375 CPUIDvc1.264
    VTT1.22

Bumping up the vcore actually raised the average run time and lowered the GFlops?
Does this mean the VTT needs to go up?

STOPPED on 2nd pass with matching results. 15.175 GFlops in 96.98sec
    419*9
    vcore1.29375 CPUIDvc1.264
    VTT1.24

    I'm stumped!?

Re: Trying to get stable with a new OS[W7x64Pro]

If you have changed clock drives manually it means you have began with fail-safe defaults. It is recommended to begin with optimized defaults.

25GFlops looks right so it is probably not vcore.

VTT, vcore and MCH/CPU reference are all related, change of one of them may require to adjust the others.

1.24-1.26 VTT would probably be needed, also set CPU PLL one step up.
MCH/DRAM Ref, DRAM Termination and channels reference may be left auto (untill and if you decide to change them.)
Set DRAM Voltage 2.0-2.1v, and tRD(Static tRead Value) 10, "just in case".
      Try SMM 2.00B.
MCH/CPU references may need adjusments http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/how-...asytune-29746/.
      The short version:
      1. Set VTT 1.2v
2 Set CPU or MCH Reference to it's desired value.
      3 Set/restore VTT to it's desired value.

For the P45 boards MCH Reference below default(0.76 @ 1.2v VTT) help stability. Try 1-3 steps below default.
Make one change at a time.
Please clean the template from comments that are not yours the next time you post it.

Re: Trying to get stable with a new OS[W7x64Pro]

Is that why I had to change the 'clock drives' out of 700? Optimized will load at CPU 800 and PCIe 900! Ok, thanks!
I was going by Gigabyte's website tutorial on 'how to install BIOS'. It said to load "Fail-Safe" after every flash.

        This was last nights run-

Is it possible to hit and keep a constant average of 26GFlops? I'll need to go higher on the FSB to hit that?

I'm thinking of dropping the VTT to 1.26 then testing and checking the averages. Think it will have a stabilizing effect?

I have been reading a bunch of forum articles and guides, but still couldn't really wrap my head around how to adjust CpuRef. While experimenting in small steps last night trying to figure out how to get 3825MHz stable, I went up in CpuRef, from .760, to now .830(actual .888 @ VTT1.28), which has seemed to tighten up my IBT times as well as make the PC error free on 10 passes of IBT. Before at CpuRef.760 I could get stable under WindowsXP32, but not under W7x64Pro.

I've read from various sources that you should go up and/or down in CpuRef on the P45 chipset. You think I should go the other way of .760 and drop to .740 to .690? I'll try it! However, should I drop the VTT first, or just go and drop the CpuRef and test?

Set PLL to 1.52? I read that this setting "reduces machine jitter", yet I really don't understand what machine jitter is. Is there a tool for checking that, or is that noticeable by my IBT run times not being consistent? Is it noticeable with the eye or the ear in gaming or making music? I'll see if I can find a wiki on that!

"Set DRAM Voltage 2.0-2.1v, and tRD(Static tRead Value) 10, "just in case".

Sorry man, I never made it apparent that I had reduced the multiplier of the memory, it's now running at 2.00B=850MHz. I'll post all the recent settings.

        Testing logs -

This is when step(run) completion time in IBT started to slow down. !0 Steps a run1

        1)
PASS 10 runs IBT @ 60.4 average seconds run
        417*9
        vcore1.27500 CPUIDvc1.248
        VTT1.22

        2)
PASS 10 runs IBT @ 69.4 seconds average run
        419*9
        vcore1.27500 CPUIDvc1.248
        VTT1.22

Since I noticed that the runs were taking longer to complete, but were checking error free I decided to bump the vcore and nothing else.

        3)
PASS 10 runs IBT @ 59.45 seconds, 24.786 GFlops average run
        419*9
        vcore1.28750 CPUIDvc1.264
        VTT1.22

Notice the difference? Now I'll bump up the vc again, no other settings.

        4)
PASS 10 runs IBT @ average run 22.14-GFlops in 66.50 sec,
        419*9
        vcore1.29375 CPUIDvc1.264
        VTT1.22

Bumping up the vcore actually raised the average run time and lowered the GFlops?
Does this mean the VTT needs to go up?

        5)
STOPPED on 2nd pass with matching results. 15.175 GFlops in 96.98sec

        I'm stumped!?
Started playing around with the CpuRef on the 3600MHz settings, bringing down the vcore to lowest possible while trying to keep stable. Backing down the vtt and raising the CpuRef made my IBT runs faster.
Noticed the IBT timing on "3" is faster than "4" at 419MHz. Lowering vcore and raising CpuRef, testing for higher average speed.

        vcore1.28750 CPUIDvc1.264 VTT1.22 CpuRef up to .785, actual .797

Raising the CpuRef raised the average GFlop & time!

        6)
PASS 10 runs IBT @ average run 25.5121-GFlops in 57.488 sec
        419*9
        vcore1.28750 CPUIDvc1.264
        VTT1.22 CpuRef.785-797 actual

This is much better than "3". Think this is getting somewhere!
what will happen with another raise of the CpuRef?

        7)
        PASS 5 @ 25.6 GFlops in 56.82 sec

        Time to move up!
So all I did for this test was bring up the FSB

        VTT1.22 CpuRef.800-812 actual

What will happen now when the vc is bumped up? Last test of the night!

Just to see if it would work!

        10) Never recorded the average, it passed on 10 so I just moved to 425MHz!
        Pass 5 @

Re: Trying to get stable with a new OS[W7x64Pro]

GFlops depend mainly on CPU frequency, so yes with max CPU ratio of 9 the only way to get higher GFlops is incerase FSB.

Evereything may effect stability, you may be stable with 1.26v VTT but probably need more as you increase FSB.

CPU Reference depand on various things, the CPU vcore VTT and the board, set it to whatever is stable for your system. MCH seems to be more "constant" and usually 2-3 notches below default are stable with GB P45 boards at 400+MHz FSB.

Next PLL value is 1.57 for your board I believe. This voltage may be harmful in the long run, so keep it under 1.6v. According to Intel's data sheet 1.575 is "absolute max" for this voltage, so it seems ok to have it on 1.57v.
This is internal CPU's clock voltage and help stability at higher frequencies.

I was aware you "underclock" the ram, hence "just in case".

IBT is not enough for stability testing. It does give good indication of required vcore though. Run at least 8-12 hours Prime95 blend at each milestone so you can save a stable BIOS profile for it.

I was aware you "underclock" the ram, hence "just in case". Kewl! So just loosen 'Performance Level' one bump to loose3n the timings so the memory does not interfere with CPU stability testing. That's why my memory timings are as loose as they are. I'll get to those later!

Yeah, I'm just using this to find the CPU stability, as the settings from XP32 did not work for W7x64, so I just started the hole OC over! There is the possibility that I may have to increase my vcore using 'P95:Blend Test'. Kind of the reason why I've gone 3 vcore voltage bumps past the lowest possible vcore stability I found in IBT. At vc 1.318, vtt1.26 Cpuref.834, my average IBT run time was 21.8529 GFlops in 68.45 secs.

Dropping CpuRef to .740 failed IBT on PASS 2. Going back to VTT1.28 @ CpuRef.830= CpuRef.880

            Dropping VTT to 1.26 @ CpuRef.830 = CpuRef.868

            Will report back after test!

I will come back after I have done some test with the CpuRef raised and lowered. I'm thinking that raising the CpuRef will lower the IBT run times. Just a Theory! I'll get back to you with the test results!

Seems that your settings for the first IBT run in post #2 and those from post #4 are the close to optimal as possible, try to work from there.

Raising the vcore only increased the run time and decreased the GFlops. Raise the CpuRef and record what happens.

Re-reading most of this forum and the links it gave me to other sites with guides and information, as well as your help has refreshed me, 'somewhat', on how ocing works.

                The help is appreciated!

                vtt1.28, CpuRef.845 = .893
Had to stop this test, could see it was stable by pass 8, but was only slowing down by the end.
Raising the Cpuref decreased GFlops and raised run time! See what happens when I go to-

                2nd EDIT:

Not slow, but it is slower CpuRef.830

                Code:

"I think" if I wanted to use vc1.33750, than I would have to bump CpuRef up 1 to 3 past what I'm at now. Maybe .845, which slowed down 1.33125, I should try first?

For now, I'm going to let my machine run with P95 open, topping 50.9c, run until I go to bed. Then I'll have it run in Blend when I go to bed!
                No games for another night!

Re: Trying to get stable with a new OS[W7x64Pro]

Let P95 run all night while I was asleep. It has been 7 hours and P95:Blend is still testing. We know it's seven hours stable now. Since I have the day off, I was going to let it run up to 10 hours just to be sure.
These settings have also passed 10, 1408MB runs on IBT.

I'll post my settings and screen shot of the test with needed info. Please give you input!

I understand what the machine jitter must be, playing BF2:PR last night, my game was twitching and stuttering and it was not the Net connection that was causing it, or else it would have been more random lag do to Net spikes... I think you get the picture... I think I get the picture!

The stutter may be a result of memory/bus related settings as well.

                      That's what I figured.

In other news. It's 11am and I've almost hit 12hours on P95:Blend, 56c tops. Will you need a screen print of everything like in my first post, but with the P95 run?

I should have that 4GBs of HyperX by 2pm!

Almost a week now and still no email from the admins to make my account fully authorized! ...sigh...

Just full settings perheps a screen capture of EasyTyne advanced voltage and MemSet main window only.

Things may change with the 4GB of ram. Do you intend to use all 6GB?

I plan on using the other 2GBs for an e5300, with a MB that supports the memory, which I'll have to purchase! Hoping that my friend decides to sell me the 250 he has laying around since he upgraded! If not, it will get my old EVGA 512MB 9600GT.

                          Again, thanks for your help!

So I got that 4GBs in the mail moments ago. Love how it coincided with my day off... Sweet!

Put the modules in together with settings posted above and the PC booted without issue. Seems like it took a little longer to boot though. I'm writing this off the first boot, so the system may have just been configuring to the new memory.

So what are your suggested times memory timings to start working off of for these modules?

We can get those inputted and I'll run P95 tonight.

Was the stutter issue in the game solved?

It is quite interesting you had to change CPU Reference and by that much. Useually it is the MCH Reference that need adjustment, CPU Reference at higher speeds. So maybe it is worth trying a step down MCH Reference if the stutter problem still persists and see if it is solved.
