  • GA-EP45-UD3P, E8600 overclock problems

I am having issues booting into Windows 7 x64 with anything higher than 405fsb. I'm stuck at that level no matter what voltage, multiplier, and memory settings I'm using. The bios will post well above that level and it will pass memtest86+ all the way up to 475 using the bios settings below.

Even at 410 I'll see a Windows start up screen and it will immediately go to start up repair. At 405 it boots just fine and it can pass a 24 hour Prime95 stress test.

What's odd is that I was able to get it to boot at 433 even with lower voltages and tighter memory settings. I'm not sure what happened between that time and now. The bios below shows the highest settings I've used to get past the Windows start up screen. The second set of numbers in parenthesis are the old settings that were able to boot at 433.

Are MCH Reference and CPU Reference the actual values set in BIOS?

Yes they are, Chike. The second set of values that says (auto) was for the 433 x10 setting.

I reset some of the voltages that you mentioned above back to auto and now I'm able to boot at 450 x10. I'll post my new bios settings and the screenshot after a few quick tests.

Still IMO a few of the voltages are way over where they should or can be. It would be best to set them low as possible.

I agree and I'm working on that right now. I had them up there when I was trying to get Windows to boot and only to see if that was problem.

                Re: GA-EP45-UD3P, E8600 overclock problems

I didn't have any luck with a higher fsb and lower multi so I went with 433 x10. I'd like to squeeze a bit more out of it, but I think the amount of memory is causing problems. Also, I have to add on my RAID 1 array, 4x1TB WD black drives, an NVS 440, and a 7950GT when my system is stable.

I left my memory timings and tRFC very loose so memory wouldn't cause any issues. CPU and FSB volts are still high.

                  Re: GA-EP45-UD3P, E8600 overclock problems

You will probably have to tweak MCH Reference and/or Cpu Reference volt settings at 4.0GHz or higher settings.
Do you have Load Line Calibration (LLC) enabled.
tRFC = 78 should be loose enough.
Using 2.00B and Static tRead Value (tRD) = 9 is loose enough.

Chike is taking good care of you so I'll be a sideline observer.

                    Re: GA-EP45-UD3P, E8600 overclock problems

There is a new FE BIOS that comes with the recommendetions of at least one happy user.

I myself recommend using XMP/EPP profile if you have them, and leave all advanced controls on auto.

MCH Core and possibly VTT are a bit too high. Both may be lowered by adjusting MCH and/or CPU Reference.

                    The short version:
                    1. Set VTT(CPU Termination) to default 1.2v
                    2. Set MCH or CPU Reference to it's desired value.
                    3. Set VTT to it's original/desired value

Both MCH and CPU Reference default value is 0.76 at 1.2v VTT.
For the P45(MCH) it is usually lower than the default that will make it stable.
Start with MCH Reference and see if you can lower MCH Core to 1.32v or less.

The ram is rated 2.2v (maybe more, check the sticker or box) you may need a little more than 2.1v with 8GB.

                      Re: GA-EP45-UD3P, E8600 overclock problems

I brought down my tRFC and static settings and it's still stable @2.2v.

I got MCH down to 1.32 with CPU ref @.76 and MCH @.72. Now if I want to move my VTT lower will I have to readjust my MCH ref since VTT voltage has an effect on it?

Update: I brought down VTT to 1.32 and MCH to 1.32 with references at .73 and .72 and it seems to be stable.
But, I enabled RAID in the bios and I can't get Windows to boot. I haven't put the extra drives in yet, I simply turned on the option in the bios.
I went back and turned RAID off and I started to add drives one by one. I'm getting the same boot failure when I get up to 3 total drives with RAID turned off.

Have you ran Prime95 or IBT? What are core temps during stress?

Can you post your full settings, preheps a screen capture of EasyTune advanced voltage tab and MemSet main window too?

Sorry I am not familiar with RAID, can't help with that.

I had the same problem with RAID0.If you don't have your HDD's installed and Raid set in BIOS before you install OS you'll have to do a clean install. Anyway thats what worked for me.
My other RIG is a EP45-UD3P rev 1.6 FE / E8600 - 4.27GHz (450x9.5) LLC:Enabled / Vcore:1.36875 / Vtt:1.36 / CPU PLL:1.57 / CPU Ref.:Auto / MCH Core:1.26 / MCH Ref.:Auto / DRAM Voltage:2.1 - yours may be different. You might work on reference voltages to get Vcore and Vtt lower. I'm not trying to step on anybody's TOES here - LSD was helping me with these settings - But he left forum before I could get 24/7 stable. I'll just sit back and watch from here on out.

These core temps are after 5 hours of Prime95 with 23c ambient. It's stable with these settings, but I get an error in Prime95 after a few hours if my extra HDs are installed.
I had to raise my ICH I/O and ICH core up to get it to boot with the 4x1TB WD drives. Still no luck with the raid setting. I run a RAID 1 array so I'll have to install my OS again anyway.

I'm still working on getting vcore, VTT, and MCH lower. The settings below are as low as it will go with the current CPU and MCH reference numbers.
