  • Is it possible to go beyond ET6 4.16MHz on X58A-UD7 with i7-975 extreme chip?

    Hi,

    System:
    X58A-UD7
    i7-975 Extreme Bloomfield
    Corsair Dominator GT 6GB PC3-16000C8 2000MHz
    Corsair HX1000W

I just put together a new system and I am new to overclocking. I was hoping to get some pointers to what I can start to go beyond EasyTune6 4.16Mhz boost setting. I currently have F4 in the bios. Here are my BIOS settings...any help greatly appricated. I have water cooling on CPU, and awaiting for the full board water cooling block from EK.
    Any pointers/help greatly appricated.

set ram voltage to 1.66 never leave it on auto, same for cpu and qpi voltage try 1.30000 cpu v and 1.380000 qpi v,set all ram speed and timings manually, uncore freq will be 2x ram multi then add one to it so if ram multi is 10 uncore will be 21.

Re: Is it possible to go beyond ET6 4.16MHz on X58A-UD7 with i7-975 extreme chip?

Thanks Warren for your help, i really need it. I am so new at this OC stuff, by the time i figure it out my system will so old. I spent all day Saturday and most of today ( nearly 15 hours so far ) and I still cant do the basic overclocking

Just curious, why never leave ram voltage in Auto?

I tried your suggested settings and my system booted up and I logged in, but as soon as i logged in it crashed, tried rebooting 3 times just to check and still it crash. I put my RAM ( CMG6GX3M3A2000C8 ) at 8-8-8-24. Yet when in Auto its set to 9-9-9-24. Can someone explain to me what these settings are and is it better to have them lower or higher numbers. Also I see some people referring to 1T? whats this?
Also when DDR3 is overclocked to 2100 , how in the BIOS is achieved is it by changing the 8-8-8-24 settings?

There are so many settings to change I cannot even get the basic overclocking sorted. Yes i can use the ET6 by simply hitting the boost option and get 4.16MHz but thats as far as I can go.

I presume everyone overclocks their system by changing the settings in the BIOS and never use ET6 for changing settings. See I think half my problem is i use ET6 to get me to 4.16Mhz then I play in the Bios to see if i can go futher and i cant. So i use ET6 to set it back to default settings then try your suggestions Warren. But i still cant get it overclocked.

Sorry for the silly questions but if anyone has i7-975 extreme desktop CPU and x58a-ud7 with Corsair GT RAM ( CMG6GX3M3A2000C8 ) and has their system overclocked I would really appricated their help or even better their bios settings.

Maybe someone can point me to a good Dummy's ( in my case a super dummy ) guide to overclocking, would really appricate it... too tired now up till 3.30am this morning working on this and still no better

      thanks
      T.

you need to set timings manually change it from auto and type in the numbers in the boxes 8-8-8-24-command rate 1T is faster than 2T,and uato will always overvolt your components so set it manually and usually alot lower than what auto sets them at.try with 1.35 to 1.36 cpu v and same for qpi voltage

Thanks again Warren u have been a great help man.

another question in your first post you mentioned that the uncore frequency will be 2x ram multi, is ram multi also known as 'System Memory Multiplier' ( SPD ) in the Bios?

          cheers

yh its what raises and lowers your ram speed, uncore is twice what ram multi is then you add one or two to it......whatever is more stable

              Hi Warren,
thanks again, i owe u so many thanks, now a pint is in order :)
              Here is what i did in the bios;
              changed;
Uncore & QPI: just changed uncore to x25 gave me a freq of 3333Mhz
              RAM multi ( SPD ) = 12
Also put all my 3 RAM channels to 8-8-8-24-1
              CPU Vcore = 1.3
              QPI / Vtt = 1.335V
IOH Core = Auto ( not sure what to do with this one , what is this??? )
DRAM Voltage = 1.660V ( its in color pink...whereas other lower voltages are not pink??? )

              Are these correct?

              I didnt change the CPU Clock Ration , this is still at x25 3.33Ghz ( 133x25 )
BCLK = 133 I didnt change this left this at default...never touch this one.
QPI Link Speed = 6.4GHz ( this is auto , never changed this one. )

After i changed the above settings I ran CPU Stress Test v0.17b which ran
fine ( no crashes ) and my CPU Core speed went to 3464.1 Mhz. Have I
made progress? i guess so by making the changes and my system didnt
crash which is great more than i got after nearly 15 hours the weekend. But my speed didnt really increase, so i must of forgotton something? any ideas?

              cheers
              J.

what cpu speed are you at now? 3.4ghz? dont use cpu 1.35v for that speed, you should clock to 4.2/4.3 with 1.35cpuv........for 3.8ghz i only use 1.18750 cpu v,set bclk now to give you 4ghz or 4.2ghz and leave voltages as they are....or for 3.4ghz set cpu v to normal setting(1.18750v) in voltages

                    Hi Warren,

my speed is at 3.4Ghz. my CPU is at 1.3V. Should i be changing anything else? Attached is screen shots of my bios now.

Just reading your last post, i should be now uping my BCLK to 166, which if i am correct should give me 166 x 25 = 4150 in speed. Can i push the BCLK past 166 with the current voltages?

                    Is this correct?

                    Hi ProjJim,
thanks for the links i will look through them , from the links i seen the youtube of NCIX ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?<wbr>v=iwbzQblRQ7I ) about overclocking, the youtube video said if you have an extreme desktop i7 chip ( which is what i have i7-975 extreme desktop ) its alot easier to over clock and that basically you leave all settings as is ( does this mean auto? ) and just focus on CPU multipler and CPU voltage adjustment, the rest i.e. RAM QPI uncore etc all within Intel spec. What does he mean by all within intel spec? is this auto settings or specfic voltages that intel recommend, if it is recommend settings from intel where do i get the recommended specs, i tried googing intel website for recommending voltage settings but couldnt find anything.
                    thanks
                    T.

Just tried uping my BCLK to 166 and the computer could not get pass BIOS, it would not but correctly. I guess i missed something :(

maybe i should try 150 as BCLK instead of 166?

                      cheers

                        Hi guys,

Based on the youtube link above i decided to try that, basically just focus on CPU voltage and the CPU multipler. So basically i did as the video suggested and by having CPU voltage at 1.3 and the CPU multipler up to 27 i was able to get to 3.8Ghz.

I did not want to go any futher until i ran it by you guys. Is it risky just upping the CPU multipler and my CPU volt at 1.3? Has anyone heard any risks/problems with OC this way?
Attached is when i just have CPU volt at 1.3 and CPU multipler at 27.

                        thanks
