    EX58-UD5 - The disappearing IDE drive

    Can anyone help? I've just upgraded to F10 from F8 in the hope that it would solve this.
    I have 6 hard drives and a DVD writer in my system. 5 of the drives are SATA and one is IDE.
    I only use the ICH connectors (blue) as I use the GSATA ports purely for external SATA drives.
    Recently, my one IDE drive has been going offline from time to time and I'd have to re-boot to get it to show up again. Now it just doesn't show at all. First I thought that it was failing so I replaced it with another (both WD caviar) and it's doing the same. Obviously this is plugged in to the single IDE connector on the board and uses the correct cable and jumpers set correctly on each drive.
    My BIOS shows 10 IDE slots (0 through 5) which I'm assuming are the 10 SATA ports.
    The first 6 show all my 5 WD SATA drives and the DVD writer and the last 4 show 'NONE' (I presume these are the 4 GSATA slots which are currently unoccupied)
    So where should the IDE master and slave show up in the BIOS? As far as I can tell (power supply and heat permitting) you could have 12 drives plugged in using all 10 SATA and 2 IDE. But the BIOS only reports 10 slots?

    Anyone for some help please?

    have you tried with a different ide cable?? it should be set to ide/sata in the bios,i use a lite-on ide drive and have no problems..the bios only sees the 10sata ports,you have two ide block connectors on the motherboard,one near the 24pin power socket and another at the bottom,have you tried plugging in each slot?

      Is your IDE drive displayed during the initial boot screen?
      Check the windows Device Manager and see if there any problems with the IDE disk.

      Did you load Optimized Bios Default settings after you flashed your bios?

        You must have a different board. Mine has 1 IDE connector. The other similar one is for a floppy (a what??) which I don't use.
        I haven't tried a different cable but I put both the drive and cable in my old machine and they work perfectly.
        it should be set to ide/sata in the bios - what should? I don't use raid so everything is configured for IDE mode, but there is no BIOS setting for the IDE controller, only the SATA ports.

        Is your IDE drive displayed during the initial boot screen?
        Check the windows Device Manager and see if there any problems with the IDE disk.
        The drive doesn't show up in post. It may have done when it was working.
        Device manager (Win 7 64) reports that all devices are working correctly.

        Did you load Optimized Bios Default settings after you flashed your bios?
        Yes, before resetting for my overclock @ 3.61 Ghz.

        It's a mystery.....it's a mystery....

          yes your right theres only one ide socket,try taking a close look at it to see if any pins are bent or broken

            The socket is fine. I think there's a far more technical reason for this failure as the drive was working ok and then started disappearing. It would re-appear on re-boot but then, as I said, it doesn't show at all now. If this was a bent pin or faulty cable then it just wouldn't work.
            Somehow, it's just not getting detected.
            I tried increasing the 'pause for HD detection' setting right up to 15 seconds but still no joy.

              I have had problems with the power connector on the hard drive itself, on WD drives. It gets a loose connection after moderate handling and sometimes it works and shows up and sometimes it does not depending on the tension on the power connector. Try gently pressing the power connector together while booting
              --> l l <--

              the two lls are the drive at the power connector and the arrows are your fingers. get it ??
              Another test would be to feel the drive at post to see if it spins up and stays spinning.

                try updating the intel chipset drivers also,from gigabytes website
