    SATA2 raid setup: Setup existing drive

    I just want to move my existing Win7 drive to SATA2 mirror array. I bought another drive exact size etc.

    The documentation mostly describes setting up the SATA2 for new install, but i just want to create my array with current HD...

    Do i just load the SATA2 drivers to the existing HD? then run the SATA2 setup???

    No I believe you will need a 3rd hard drive and copy all your data to the third hard drive then set thos into a RAID. You will need to use Gigabyte's RAID bios. Check your motherboard manual on how to set your RAID up. Then run a fresh install of your OS and then you can copy the data from your 3rd hard drive to the new RAID OS

      Does the "SATA2" refer to second generation of SATA standard, or to chip named by Gigabyte's marketing department?

      Generally, neither fakeRAIDs nor HW-RAIDs do support creation of one-legged mirrors. Some might support migration from one RAID-type to another though. On the contrary, Linux software RAID can create one-legged mirror. But even there one has to migrate offline the data from the JBOD to RAID1 (and then add the JBOD as second leg of the RAID1). Does not help a Win7 user.

      The third drive is recommended anyway. Attempting anything without proper backup can easily summon Murphy.

      I would rather use ICH than GSATA for fakeRAID0, if the board does have ICH.
