    Re: EP45-UD3R E8500 overclocking

Just hit a milestone, system is Prime 95 Blend stable (12 hours - 4.00GHz 8x500).

    EDIT:

One thing is worrying me though, was only hitting 21.9 GFlops...Any ideas? Surely I don't need more VCORE.

    EDIT2:

El problemo - Wanted to test default clock speed for comparison, pic shows there is a problem.

Why are my stock GFLOPS so low? Running stock template with 90% settings on auto.

      Re: EP45-UD3R E8500 overclocking

It's why I run IBT before Prime95 blend, no point to test stability why performance are way off.
Stock GFlops may be 1 GFlops more can you post a screen capture of EasyTune voltages and MemSet main window?

EDIT: I have only 2GB of memory, for more accurate comparison, can you make 5 runs with 1534MB?

        Re: EP45-UD3R E8500 overclocking

One thing before that, I ran IBT again, but this time with LLC enabled to keep my VCORE from varying, the results are shocking. I'm sort of stumped, you'd think without the VCORE dip that the GFLOPS would be higher...

For benchmarking, always wait untill the computer is completely idle, windows has finished starting it's services and there is less as possible applications running.

              Re: EP45-UD3R E8500 overclocking

All looks like it should be so The thing I'd suspect is memory.
              For 20.8GFlops at 3.16GHz I used DDR-800 4-4-4-12 tRFC 42(default for my ram) tRD 5. E8xxx processors usualy give 4-5% better results.
Try lowering tRFC to 58 first and see if there's any change.
              Then try tRD 5.
Fir testing purposes you can doo it with MemSet, change the field and click apply, no need to reboot, BIOS settings will not be changed. The computer may freeze if tRD is too low, but I think 5 should work for you.

                Re: EP45-UD3R E8500 overclocking

I'm fairly sure tRD 5 @ my memory speed and timings would crash my pc, but per your request I did another IBT with the specs you listed.

                  This is what I'd expect.
Usually, or so I thought, using more memory yield a slightly better resilts.
I don't know what to think.

                    Re: EP45-UD3R E8500 overclocking

My main question is: System is blend stable for 12 hours, but the gflops seems low, and time to reach results seems to be high. Will only VCORE improve the results, or is it possible another setting could be affecting it, like MCH core voltage?

                      Re: EP45-UD3R E8500 overclocking

For a given performance strength of the machine, test time will get longer as more memory is used, this is normal.
There is enough vcore at least for stock settings, GFlops results supports it.
Could be MCH Core, try to increase it graduatly.
I would try taking the memory from slots 2 & 4 out and run max stress level, then put them back and take memory from slots 1 & 3 out and try the same, see if there's any difference.

Made 2 main changes, MCH Core to 1.38V, also upped MCH Ref, it's now only about 1 notch below CPU Ref.

And for comparison, Arctic-k20's same IBT.

EDIT: Tried Performance Level 9 using memset, but it froze my machine.

EDIT2: Ran IBT again with above settings, only thing changed was Performance Enhance in BIOS set to Turbo.

Appears to be about .4 GFLOPS increase.

Did you try setting tRD = 9 in the bios? This might work when using the 2.00D memory multiplier.
With 8GB of memory, tRD = 9 might not be stable with 500MHz FSB.
Additional tweaks with MCH Ref and CPU Ref might be needed.

Obviousely in the first run tRD is disabled and the second it's 10, avoid the turbo, set it manually.
