  • HDD boot priority keeps changing

Hey all...been a while since I visited. Hope you're all doing well.

I have a GA-EP45-DS3L motherboard. I have an SSD with Win 7, plus 3 other HDDs installed. I have ACHI enabled. All was working well until a couple weeks ago when this annoying problem started.

Basically, the Hard Disk Boot Priority gets reset every time I shut down. The order seems to change randomly. I go into the BIOS and set my SSD as #1 on the priority list, save settings, and OS loads up no problem (nice and fast, I might add )

The next day, I start the PC and it won't boot because the priority is muddled and one of the storage HDDs is #1 now. So have to go back in and reset.

I thought it might be my CMOS battery, but my Overclock settings and everything else aren't affected. If it were the battery, you'd think everything would be reset.

My next step will probably be to crack open the case and check all the cables, maybe put the SSD on Sata 0? Not sure that'll do anything, but I'm hoping one of you has a suggestion.

    Thanks in advance!

What have you done differently in the past couple of weeks? Per se, BiOS update? anything like that, even tho, that shouldn't change your settings I don't think...hmmm... need some more info. If it's your battery (which I have NEVER had one go bad...weird?) But I think you are right it will reset all of the setting if that is the problem.

        Tizzie,
I haven't done a BIOS update. Still on version f9. Not sure if there's an update available.

boot priority or do you mean boot order? set your ssd as first boot device and dont set the other mechanical hd's just select none,or do you have other os's on those too?

I found a f10 v. Not sure if that is the newest or not, maybe run a check on the site?

could be hogwash, but chek it for yourself against the manufaturer website...

              Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L (rev. 1.0) Bios F10

@warren, that may do the trick also. Force it to have no choice...lol

Re: HDD boot priority keeps changing

I'm talking Hard Disk Boot Priority, not Boot Order. Originally I had Boot Order set to:

                1. USD HDD
                2. CD/DVD ROM
                3. Hard Disk

                Now it's set to:

                1. Hard Disk
                2. None
                3. None

Re: HDD boot priority keeps changing

Found one of my drives was getting a SMART failure warning. It appears to be the culprit as after I removed it, the HDD boot priority stuck.
