  • Ga-ex58-extreme + 12gb ram?

Anyone have any luck getting this board and an i7-920 to work at RAM rated specs with 12GBs?

Got 6 sticks of Corsair Dominator 1600.

Haven't been able to get them to run at 1600, have to downclock them to 1200 but have also tightened the timings to 7-7-7-21 1T.

My CPU is overclocked as well which I know can affect RAM stability.

Basically, I'm curious if this new F10 BIOS with it's "Enhanced Memory capability" might help me run all 6 sticks at 1600.

Also, can anyone tell me what the safe max voltages for ICH and IOH are? I've heard bumping those up can help but no idea how high I can go without frying something or shortening it's lifespan.

Lastly, the RAM is rated to run with 1.65v but Gigabyte BIOS only allows me to go with 1.64 or 1.66 and I've been using 1.64 to be safe.

1.66 in bios will set it to 1.64 in windows it shouldnt go any higher than that or it will damage your ram,is it 2 6gb kits or one 12gb kit?youll have more success with a matched 12gb kit, what qpi voltage are you using? and have you set system performance enhance to standard?also what cpu clocks are you at?and voltages

2 6GB kits. I didn't realize there'd be issues until long after I had purchased the 2 kits.

CPU is 3.8GHz @ 1.35v w/ 19x multiplier and 200 bclk (C0 stepping). I haven't really been able to have much success getting it to 4GHz (but haven't pushed it to 1.4v either).

      QPI: 1.335v
      CPU PLL: 1.8v
      PCIE: 1.5v
      IOH: is 1.1v
      ICH I/O: 1.5v
      ICH Core: 1.1v

      Load Line Calibration is ENABLED.

Performance mode is set to STANDARD.

Turbo and all other settings like C1 and EIST are DISABLED.

Only Hyperthreading and Virtualization are ENABLED.

I think I have XMP on but I also have it on expert settings and did the timings manually but don't know enough to configure anything once you go into Advanced DRAM Features.

you should be able to run with turbo enabled, its because you have 2 6gb kits its harder to tweak them unlike a factory binned 12gb kit, have you tried raising qpi voltage a little?
maybe 1.38000? youll need more with 12gb

Haven't really tried that because I read that Intel's stated safe range for QPI was 1.35.

I've tried bumping the IOH and ICH voltages up all by .1v and CPU PLL up to 1.88v.

Do you think 1.38v for QPI would still be considered safe (I keep my computer running pretty much 24/7)? If so, I guess I could give it a try.

yes a forum mod lsdmeasap said its safe to use 1.3-1.5 qpi,tho personally i wouldnt go any higher than 1.4v.youll need more with 12gb i only need 1.3 with my setup slightly more if you have a c0 chip or higher speed ram...you could try and get everything stable with just 6gb,then once stable add the other 6gb and raise qpi v till stable??? youll also need to loosen ram timing as it wont run @7-7-7-21 id try 8-8-8-28 to start with and try tighten later

              Re: Ga-ex58-extreme + 12gb ram?

Alright, I'll give that a try. RAM is rated to run stock at 8-8-8-24 2T so I'll give it a go with QPI 1.38v.

It's stable as is with only 6GB.

If QPI 1.38v doesn't work, do you think upping the IOH & ICH voltages would make any difference?

Really appreciate you taking the time to help me out. While it probably won't be a big performance difference, it's been bugging me for awhile that I can't run my RAM at it's rated speeds.

I got a lot of work to do for my classes so I'll have to find time to try these. I'll definitely let you know here too if I can get it running.

              Thanks.

im not too sure about ioh and ich normally you have to raise those with graphics card,if its unstable try looser timings there rated at 8-8-8-24@6gb tho not @12 gb so you might need to loosen abit more to run 12gb @1600mhz

Tried it at 8-8-8-24 2T (rated specs) @ 1600 with [email protected] (next highest is 1.395v).

Also had DRAM voltage at 1.66v, CPU PLL 1.88v, IOH 1.2v, ICH I/O 1.6v, ICH Core 1.2v.

Still a no go, guess I'm stuck with my stuff at 7-7-7-21 1T 1200.

I also have a CO chip @ 3.8 with 12gb of Gskill, runs fine @1200, but a total no go @ 1600, even with relaxed timings. Does your rig boot @ all when you rasie QPI volts?? Mine will fail to boot if it isnt set on auto....

                      Re: Ga-ex58-extreme + 12gb ram?

Yup, mine boots, I can't remember what default is, but I keep my QPI @ 1.335v (never really tried dropping it to see if it remains stable though).

The next highest is 1.355v which is highlighted in pink in my BIOS so I've been avoiding going higher than 1.335v until warren300 recommended I try.

Was hoping the F10 BIOS would let me run my stuff at 1600 but I guess it's more of an Intel Memory Controller design issue than a motherboard/BIOS issue.

youll need alot more qpi voltage with 12 gb as the onboard memry controller will need more juice to handle 12gb of ram,and a c0 chip tends to need abit more juice than a d0

Yeah, seems like it, doubt it's worth risking pumping that much QPI voltage just to get the small boost in performance goin from 1200 to 1600.
