So I just got the X58A-UD3R motherboard. It says in the manual that you can add memory even when you have 3 sticks in triple channel mode in the motherboard.

"When enabling 3 channel mode with 3, 4, or 6 modules, it is recommended that memory of the same capacity, brand, speed, and chips be used. When enabling 3 channel mode with 3 memory modules, be sure to install them in the DDR3_1, DDR3_3, and DDR3_5 sockets. When enabling 3 channel mode with four memory modules, be sure to install them in the DDR3_1, DDR3_2, DDR3_3, and DDR3_5 sockets."

So can I use my current 3 sticks in 3 channel mode and just add a random 4th stick and still have 3 channel? Or lets say I bought 4 sticks of the same RAM, can that actually be used in 3 channel mode? How and would it perform as well as just having 3 sticks?

if it says you can use 3 channel using 4/5/6 modules then i would guess youd still be in 3channel mode, and id say the more ram the better, tho i havnt tried with more than 3 modules

4 sticks would work in dual-channel mode, which the board can do. In benchmarks, you might have a decrease in performance but in real-life will hardly notice.

That being said, I would take more memory over having triple-channel.
