  • Help to oc E8500 on EP45-DS3L

Hello guys , im new on this forum and also my experience with OC is very low (not existent to be more precise).....anyway i have read some topics on this forum and i manage to tweak my system to a certain point( stable 450x8 on a E8500) - i would like a 500X8 if its possible but i cant reach it ( i posted first on another topic of an user how could reach 500x8 because i tryed his settings but they didnt work, and following a suggestion of one of your members - Chike- to whom i thank a lot for the advice and the fast reply - i did this new thread )

this is the link to my RAM:

This is what i have ; i know its far from beeing ok but i hope for some advices and tips ( when i started reading this forum 4 days ago i knew nothing about OC )......im not aiming for high frequency but rather for high rated FSB - therefore a 500X8 ( 2000 FSB ) would be more than enough for me ......if its possible !

Re: Help to oc E8500 on EP45-DS3L

Did you load optimized bios settings before making any changes.
Your ram is rated for 1066 speeds with Cas = 6 at 2.10 volts.

Try the basic voltage settings in this post.
Cpu Vcore will probably need to be around 1.35 volts or higher with 500MHz speeds.
MCH Core = 1.24 - 1.28 volts will probably work. When this setting is too high or too low, boot loops or instability will occur.

With your current overclock, several voltages are too high.

Auto scale all timings but CAS.

      @alin
The template leads to think timings are manually set, but from the actuall timings in MemSet it seems they are on auto. Try to be accurate as possible, it's important.
What is the default Vcore for the processor (the one on the left side in BIOS)?

Re: Help to oc E8500 on EP45-DS3L

Hello again , thank you all for replying .......heres what i did:

        - i tryed the basic voltages profJim said : i set the cpu vcore to 1.35 ( btw isnt it too high ? ) and also tryed MCH core from 1.24-1.28 with a RAM setting 6-6-6-23 ( manually i doublechecked !) but it boots for 5 sec than reboots ( however it seems much better than the settings i tryed before but im afraid to raise the cpu vcore....is it ok to go more than 1.35?)

@Chike : im sorry if my templates werent according to memset; i wrote the templates manually from my memory ( ).....next time ill be more precise ! heres my default voltages ( the ones that appear on the left)

        CPU Vcore --------------- 1.23750
        CPU Termination --------- 1.200
        CPU PLL ----------------- 1.550
        CPU Reference ----------- 0.805

        MCH Core ---------------- 1.100
        MCH Reference ----------- 0.760
        ICH I/O ------------------1.550

        DRAM VOLTAGE ------------1.800

Right now the pc is running on 450x8 with vcore on 1.306 and the rest set on auto ( if i set them on default or even higher values like profJim said it boot loops) .....memory is set manually to 5-5-5-23

Re: Help to oc E8500 on EP45-DS3L

Your cpu is rated at 1.3650 volts maximum.
With the typical EP45 0.06 volt cpu vdroop, setting your cpu up to 1.42 volts (if needed) is OK if you have a decent cpu heatsink/fan setup. Your goal is for a stable system to run with the lowest possible voltage settings.

With your value ram, you might need 6-6-6-18 (or 21) settings at 900MHz speeds. Try it with your memory voltage = 1.8 - 2.1 volts.

Just for now, lower your cpu multiplier to 7x so that you're running your cpu at 3.150GHz (7x450). CPU Vcore in the low 1.3000 volt range should be fine.
With this setting, your cpu is running near the stock speed, but your memory will still be running at 900MHz.

Set Static tRead Value (tRD) = 10 (for now) for memory channels A & B.
If you're still having problems, set:
          (G)MCH Frequency Latch ---------------- : [AUTO]
          System Memory Multiplier -------------- : [2.00B]
          and try again.

Most 2x2GB memory setups require MCH Core to be at least 1.20 volts or higher, where 1.22 - 1.28 usually works for most overclocks.
Some 4GB memory kits require MCH Core to be set at 1.05 volts, sometimes a little higher, and rarely lower than 1.05 volts.
MCH Core that is too high or too low often leads to instability or boot loop problems.

          Good luck.

Ok, i set the vcore to 1.306 DRAM voltage to 1.9; multiplier is 7 (+0.5) tRD=10 (for both A and B channels) ; boots like a rocket .......any ideas for 500x7 or even 500x8? I left MCH core to auto - i will try those values (are lower than my readings) - i think they will work

Re: Help to oc E8500 on EP45-DS3L

Not to rain on your parade, but successfully booting into windows is only the first step.
Before you go any further, running 10 passes of Intel BurnTest (IBT) and then running Prime95 blend test for 8 - 12 hours (or more, longer is better) is needed to ensure that your system is stable.
Check out the Prime95 Tutorial at Playtool.com.

Right now it looks like your memory is probably OK at 900MHz, so the next logical step would be to increase your cpu multiplier to 8.0x and test for stability again. CPU Vcore might need to be increased slightly for this test.

Once your system is stable at the final overclock, we can work on lowering some of the voltages and optimizing the memory for optimal performance.

What brand/model is your computer case?
How many fans are installed in your case?
What is the normal room temperature in your computer room?

Note: you will want to watch the cpu core temperatures while you are running IBT. Running with threads = 2 and using the the most amount of memory possible will generate the highest temperatures and maximum stress. Core temperatures up to 60 Celsius is normal, up to 70 C is still safe, but is getting to be borderline too high.
              10 loops should complete in 20 - 30 minutes.

Re: Help to oc E8500 on EP45-DS3L

Somehow i knew its gonna be like that; i thought that if i get stable 450x8 (orthos 3 hours) maybe its gonna be the same with 7.5x450? I have read that IBT is very agressive towards the cpu so therefore ill run the tests as you said watching the temperature ( with orthos the highest was 55 celsius) .......if its ok then ill go for 8x450 and a slightly higher vcore ( i like this emoticon lol )

My computer case is a Delux MG453 which has a 120mm fan inside running at full speed all the time ( its a noname but it runs like hell) ; in my room the temp is around 23-24 celsius

Oh well , IBT and prime here i come !!!

I don't like the 1.75v CPU PLL, keep it 1.65v or below if possible.
You should also look into ways of lowering Vtt(CPU Termination).

                    ^^^^ I agree!!
When overclocking, it is recommended that VTT should be at least 0.05 - 0.10 volts lower than Cpu Vcore.
Cpu PLL higher than 1.61 should NOT be used for long term use.

Ok , im back with some results: after running the intel burn test ( it said that i completed it succesfully) i tryed tweaking VTT and PLL ( i set PLL to 1.6 - it doesnt boot) and with vtt ( cpu termination) 1.2 doesnt boot either ( i did the test with these set on auto ) ........the temp wasnt higher than 63....maybe need more tests or tweaks ?

Your IBT core temperature results are in the normal range.
Running IBT with threads = 2 (for your dual core processor) and memory = 2048 will probably raise temperatures another 5 - 7 C.
I wonder what HWmonitor or Speedfan is reporting for your system voltages.

It will be most helpful if your IBT screen-shot also includes the same windows that you used in post #6.

Can you beg, borrow or steal another set of memory and a different psu to test with?

Ok ill do the test again - with the programs required.....still cant tweak voltages ( it surprises me that some can easily achieve 450-550 with low voltages and i , for 450, have to raise the voltages sky high ) but ill run the test ......i cant use another memory stick because the computer case is sealed ( is in warranty , its only 10 months old )...

This overclock that im interested in is for games ;i play some shooters ( fps games) online and i have read that theyre cpu dependent.....also some guys said that what should i be interrested in is to raise that FSB for the games ( they said this way it will send more "data") and that frequency is not so much important .......

Here are some results (450x7 ) the rest of the settings are the same ( cpu termination and CPU PLL and all the rest are on AUTO - cant do nothing without putting them on auto;i tryed recommended voltages for PLL and termination but it wont boot....same with the ram voltage) ; the temp are even lower (this time the highest is 60 while last night was 63 ) ...the test is run with IBT on 2 threads but memory is 1024 (though i said ok when it asked for 2047) because it said i have OS on 32 bit and for 2048 i need OS on 64 bit .......it seems temp are not a problem for my pc but rather high voltage requirements to achieve some modifications......however i wont give up and im opened to any suggestions

Mine is: lower CPU PLL to 1.6v or below, and see where you can get with it, before it's too late (it may be too late already).
