  • E8500 + UD3P - Undervolted, but OC'd?

Alright, I've been browsing these forums for the past week, and the wealth of information here is great, so hopefully someone can help me with this question..

i have a GA-EP45-UD3P, E8500 (E0 Stepping), 4 GB Patrion Extreme, 1066 Memory. I have Load Line Calibration Enable BTW...

I've been trying to OC and having fairly decent success. I can hit 3.8 Ghz (9.5 X 400) very easily. Anything over 400 FSB though and I start to get a BOOTIMG corrupted message when starting Windows. I've tried up to 1.25 core voltage for this and everything else is default, except the MCH which is 1.05 (I could not get 4 GB to work unless I changed this...how odd). Anywyay, I can live with 3.8 as it's a healthy OC.

My question...I've been toying with lowering the core voltage to see how low I can get, thinking maybe I can get my temps down even more...Right now I'm down to 1.75v and I can pass 20 IBT runs and a good 12+ hours of Prime95 with no issue. How low do I go? Is there any real advantage to continuing to try and lower the core voltage? I thought after I lowered it from 1.25 to 1.225 that the temps had gone down lower, but now I'm not seeing that. My load temps during IBT seem to top out around the mid 50's and high 40's for Prime 95. I'm wondering if I should just settle or continue trying to undervolt (Is this really undervolting? My VID is 1.215) it until I hit stability issues...?

    Any thoughts?

Also...I thought the temp sensor stuck issue was fixed in the E0's? I've never seen my idle temps change from 37 C per core...Very odd...

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: E8500 + UD3P - Undervolted, but OC'd?

With LLC enabled you don't realy undervolt. When setting VID for the CPU vdrop and vdroop were taken into account, meaning the CPU at stock speed should run with no problems with down to 0.1v less than VID.

The idea behind OC IMO is to get better performance not lower temps. If lower voltage/temps don't give the expected gain in performance what's the point to OC? So that's something to test besides stability.

For advise about OC settings we'll need your full BIOS settings. Use the template in this post or the one after to post them.

Also follow this post, The information described in 1-4 will also be very helpfull.

      Re: E8500 + UD3P - Undervolted, but OC'd?

Using less Vcore is what is stopping you from going to 450 FSB or above, that is not enough.

As for your MCH, did you try 1.2-1.24 first? Just checking as this is the norm, some boards do need less than stock though, not sure why. And I am not sure if this hinders overclocks on those boards either

Let me know what speed you want to try and give me your full settings and I will advise back.

I do suggest you use the latest BIOS as well if you are not already. DO NOT USE @BIOS to update it!!

        Re: E8500 + UD3P - Undervolted, but OC'd?

Thank you for the replies folks.

I do have the latest BIOS (At least I think I do). It's a Rev 1.1 board, and it has the F9 BIOS. The only other one I see is the Beta 10f.

I actually did try bumping up the MCH to 1.2 and even 1.3, and each time it failed MemTest386. Then after doing some research on these forums, I tried the 1.05 for the MCH and it worked. I was a bit surprised, but it's been rock solid every since through MemTest, Prime, IBT, etc...

I've also tried up to 1.25v for hitting higher speeds, but yeah, I never went over 1.25v. For some reason I'm just hesitant to do it. I'm probably paranoid about nothing here. I do wonder though if the lowered MCH is causing an issue since so many say they can get this chip to 4 ghz on stock. If it is, I'm wondering if I'm out of luck since higher MCH causes issues.

Will post the settings when I get home from work. Thanks a lot for all the help folks.

I suggest you use the latest beta

Thanks for your MCH comment, I just wondered as some boards need different amounts which is unusual and I wanted to be sure yours was one of those and you did not just see that mentioned some where and use it without knowing it may not be optimal. Sounds like yours is one that needs it that way.

Just because you see xxx's CPU do 4Ghz with only 1.2V does not mean yours will at all, they are all different. You may need anywhere from 1.3-1.4+ to do 4Ghz with your CPU, so don't let the voltages hold you back as that is all very safe as long as you have a decent cooler

Ok, got home today and tried cranking the core voltage up to 1.3v and the FSB to 422...in hopes of hitting 4ghz, but I still get this on booting Windows:

              Re: E8500 + UD3P - Undervolted, but OC'd?

Sorry I forot to add the linl in my previous post.
Please provide the information as described in 1-4 in this post.

Auto DRAM Voltage may not be enough, set it manually according to rasm specs.

Ser CPU Ratio 9, untill the FSB is proven stable then try to increase it.
              Try CPU Termination 1.22-1.24v.

Since you have the "low MCH Core" maybe you would care to explorer other ways to resolve it, perhaps by chagging MCH Reference or MCH/DRAM Reference, beginning with stock settings.

Run a few passes of memtest86+ before loading windows. It doesn't guarantee windows will not crash, just safety measure, bad memory settings may lead to corrupted files/file system.

                Re: E8500 + UD3P - Undervolted, but OC'd?

Your CPU may need more Vcore than that then, don't be scared of it. Try 1.35-1.4

Does it boot to windows with less of an overclock? When it does fail, does it triple reboot first or just boot to windows with that fail message? Just wondering if when it fails, then defaults are loaded instead maybe changing your disk boot order or something

Manually set BOTH tRD (Static tRead Values) to 9, and please also set your ram voltage manually to spec amount

                  Re: E8500 + UD3P - Undervolted, but OC'd?

Bit of an old thread now to bring back, but I wanted to thank you guys for the help. I had not had the time to respond here with all my settings, and just recently was able to start toying with things again.

After some tweaking, I was able to get my system stable at 422 X 9.5 (4.0 ghz), at 1.2125 VCore, 1.2 MCH and 1.9 DDR V...Apparently the big issue I had was this board did not seem to like my 1066 memory. I had to pull it back to DDR 800 and put the timings at 4-4-4-12. After I did that I was able to get everything stable. Ran Prime 95 for 27 hours straight, Memtest for 14 hours and OCCT for 4 hours. Idle temps are 37 C and load temps seem to hang around 48-50....My goal was 4 ghz and I was almost ready to settle with 3.8...

I do have one question though...What's better 9.5 X 422 or 8.0 X 500? Any advantage or disadvantage to either?

                  Thanks!
