Ive been running my q8400 at 3.92Ghz for 24 hrs or so with prime and OCCT.
I just dialed in my saved bios for q8200 at 3.43Ghz,but everything seems a lot cooler ,still it is wintertime.

Re: Another Q8200, EP45-UD3P Overclock in need of Expert Eyes

@lsdmeasap THANK YOU... I was running stable at 2.97 but it looks like my settings weren't optimal for it based on what you sent.

I tried the high ends of your settings with a 7x450 (3.15) with 2.40B (memory at 1080) overclock but it failed Prime95 immediately.

So I'm trying again with 2.00D for the memory. Nope. Fail.

        Hmmmm.

Any idea which category would need to be pumped up in order to get a better cpu result? I set the Driver Profiles to 1066 too.

@Kick, I found some of your old settings but not sure if they're your 3.43 settings... whatever I used let me boot the computer (no kernel panics) but I couldn't get very far in Prime95... but it's encouraging to know that faster speeds are possible... it just seems weird that I have such extreme/fast failures... you would think that I could squeeze more out of this.

(btw OS memory says it's running at 667 even though I have set the bios to the 1066 profile)

Interesting...the high-end values don't work for regular 7x425 (2.97)... fasscinating... OK... I'm going to make some more conservative moves and see what happens.... but apparently I'm now controlling too much!

The problem must lie in the memory timings, no? That's where the bulk of the configuring is happening.... it's all memory timings and then voltages... so I've got too much power, if anything... so that leaves the memory... this memory looks like it's serious quality stuff, massive heat-spreaders, and you would think it could do anything below 1066 without a problem... but it struggles once it's running above 850... I mean, again, I really don't know what I'm doing or what's to blame but I can see that so much of the art of this must be in the memory timings.

        Well, thanks again! Onward!

Re: Another Q8200, EP45-UD3P Overclock in need of Expert Eyes

giganate, set these, reboot and run prime95. use easytune6 to bump up your fsb as high as you can before it crashes. <--once it does thats your maximum then reboot and set your fsb 15-20 lower than your highest max working fsb. let us know your maximum fsb/cpu/memory before running a long prime95 test. These settings will allow to find your maximum performance. I took a look and these should work.

          Code:

Let us know how you get along testing with the above.

Ya, I only advised based on your 425 settings. If you want 450 advice let me know

Re: Another Q8200, EP45-UD3P Overclock in need of Expert Eyes

Thanks folks...thanks LSD, since it sounds like my setup can go considerably faster than 7x425 (based on Kick and Holland) I'm shooting for anything in the 7x450 to 7x475 range ... I'm assuming that 7x475 would be difficult for me since 7x450 is so elusive.

I will try R_Holland's settings for 7x460 above and I'll probably try pulling two sticks of memory in the next rounds too. Since nothing has worked so far, if you have time to send me some high-end settings lsdmeasap, that would be amazing!

Thanks everybody for having a look and encouraging the obsession ;)

@RHoll, man your settings didn't work for me and nor did variations I did between LSD's ranges and your settings... first I got multiple beeps, then it wouldn't start up at all! Hahahah, not like these are aggressive settings. Computer was pissed at me though ;)

Give me your current 425 settings that work for you now, and I will advise back on 450

Multiple fast beeps mean tRD is set to low, if this is what you meant raise that and try again (Static tRead Value if you are unsure)

Static tRead Value...................7......:10 (better to have low or high?)

better to have tread(performance level) lower. some tread values are impossible to acheive based on fsb and memory speed. use everest to see bandwith changes when trying to change take a look at the memory latency too. nothing wrong with tread 14-16 except sucky bandwith latency

                      MCH Core…………….....1.100V...........: 1.28 << To much, try 1.22-1.26
1.30v is the max that i would consider safe. going above is up to you.
if the mch gets damaged = headache.random bsods. there is no temp sensor on this board

DRAM Voltage ……....1.800V............: 2.2 (memory may be rated up to 2.3)
i would go 2.0v at 5-5-5-15. <---very safe. no higher. would use this for 4x2gb

                      ICH Core…………...……1.100V............: 1.200
too high. can affect sata 0-6 ports. increases heat and can make it worse if you have a hot gfx card right next to the southbridge.

giganate, one problem with fb that i noticed and not with fd/fc/fda if i use 2.1v dram i cant boot with 1.30-1.36v mch. try lowering your ram voltage to 2.0v and try overclocking higher this time. if 8gb doesn't work try trd=12. you should also try setting all voltages and settings manually and not auto.

                      DRAM Termination .…0.900V............: Auto
                      Channel A Reference 0.900V............: Auto
                      Channel B Reference 0.900V............: Auto

problem holding you back is cooling or you didn't manually set all values as stated. in post #19 plz try again with some changes. fsb=420 tread=12 for channel a&b. plz set all values as stated in template --->Trd2rd,Twr2wr,Twr2rd,Trd2wr,tRRD,tWTR,tWR,tRFC,tR TP,CMD <----- its only kind of very important unless=fail

                      (tried 4 and failed)
                      (tried 52, 62, and 72 and failed)
                      (tried 5 and failed)
these shouldn't fail when a lower setting works. no really. makes no sense.

[will I be turning any of these back on when done?]

yes, recommended. if you ever get a bsod while testing its either the OS or your settings are not stable. no need to test your stability with prime95/orthos/linx

Re: Another Q8200, EP45-UD3P Overclock in need of Expert Eyes

Just posting this again, these are the minimums ive been using on the board for a year now with the 8200.
Im using the exact same settings for the Q8400 except it gives 3.92Ghz.
Both work/Q8200 did work with 500mhz fsb stable, but Im of the opinion its the relationship of the memory to the motherboard that is governing settings around480-520.
Nb in the above actual fsb is 490x4 or 500x 4.

Even tho your board is ud3p ,id be reasonably confident that if you had the same memory as mine ,these settings would work for you.
Probably all the way down .
Below 480-470 you can drop voltages dramatically.
nb it took awhile to get static read down to 9 at 2000 actual fsb speed with 2:00D and 8 certainly wasnt happening.

nb turbo for memory tightens up the secondary timings,if your memory works with it on its more convenient than tweaking settings individually.
The temperatures in my sig below were for the Q8200 mid summer,Q8400 seems relatively cooler tho.

Bandwidth ends up around 9.5-10.5 Gb/s depending on what measurements are used ,and I think that is around the limit for the 45 chipset. At stock settings bandwidth its 7+Gb/s, memory timings are tighter of course.
I dont know if say 1300mhz memory can exceed that ,but if it cant and its the chipset bandwidth is the limiting factor, the only performance increase at max fsb will be from cpu speed.
Q8400 is running 15% faster than Q8200 but actual performance gain isnt that in testing, more like 7-10% but im happy enough.

Re: Another Q8200, EP45-UD3P Overclock in need of Expert Eyes

I so appreciate your advice and help....I had to ramp down my efforts and I used the logic of everyone's settings to find safer, happier values for now. This computer has to be put to work for a couple months so I can't tweak it further but now that I have a better understanding of how all this works, I can get have it happy and I can apply the concepts to my Q6600 at home!

thank you thank you thank you!

Your thoughts make a lot of sense of how I should be approaching this... like what should work if I already have some of it working... it's coming clear.

                          Thank you.

Gigante - check out my thread again (Help Overclock Q8200)

                            I finally got 3.4GHz stable with 8GB of 1066 (PC8500) RAM.

If you want me to post my settings let me know.
