How do I know when to update the BIOS for my GA-G31M-S2L? I went into Qflash and it showed MXIC 25L4005. I an currently having an issue with starting up/booting the computer and I was wondering if this could help.

    Re: Bios

Anytime you want you can update your BIOS, please read this guide so you do it safely http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/bios...h-guide-27576/

Here is your boards BIOS download page (F10F latest)
    GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - BIOS - GA-G31M-S2L

To check what BIOS you are using now you can check with CPU-z on the mainboard tab, or look in the BIOS. On the MAIN Page of the BIOS press F9 to see system info which will show BIOS version

If you think you may need help with your settings, let me know. If so please grab a template from my signature and give me your full specs and current settings

            Re: Bios

F5D is old Beta, I do suggest before we go anywhere with this that you please update to the latest F10 BIOS mentioned above. Please be sure to read the guide before you go ahead.

Then once you are updated and running optimized defaults let us know and we can advise.

              Re: Bios

I have questions about flashing BIOS. Considering I am not hardware literate and least of all having any experience flashing a BIOS. So I would like to know since this my first time do I need to clear the CMOS? How do I set the RAM voltage or know if I need to? How do I get DMI disabled? I have created a bootable USB drive with the files required. These are all the questions I can think of for now.

I am getting a stalled screen that says C:\>FLASHSPI.EXE G31MS2L.10f.

                Re: Bios

You can, or not. It will not matter really as long as you load and apply optimized defaults after you flash, then reboot back to the BIOS before making any changes.

You should always set your ram voltage, so the specified amount on your ram specs or sticker. You may be able to use less later with testing but set the spec'd amount first

DMI Disabled is a setting in Qflash. To enter Qflash you must press F8 on the MAIN page of the BIOS or press the END Key during Bootup

If you made a proper USB stick and it is bootable you should only get a blank prompt when booting to DOS. Looks like you also included the autoexec.bat file and or flashspi which are not needed on your USB Stick. You only need the BIOS file itself, F10f for example, and of course the files that are placed there upon creation of the bootable USB stick. You may or may not be able to see those though, depending on your system folder settings. If you followed the creation guide properly then you are fine, just delete the autoexec.bat file and you should then be able to flash from Qflash.

To make it easier on yourself, you can just choose Qflash from the MAIN page of the BIOS by pressing F8 and then browse to your USB Stick and find the BIOS file you want to flash

                  Re: Bios

I was able to update the BIOS to F10f but computer is still not booting up. BTW the link to making a bootable USB flash drive states to include FLASHSPI to the drive which is why I was having problems in Qflash.

                    Re: Bios

Not booting, what do you mean? It would have to boot in order for you to update the BIOS, so if you don't mind please explain further the issues you are now having.

FlashSPI is included only for flashing from the USB stick via DOS, it is not needed in Qflash. I guess I need to make more clear the USB bootable section has nothing to do with the Qflash section. I will edit in something to that effect now.

                      Re: Bios

In other words I am getting the following message at the end "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". Again I am not the most computer savvy person around, my apologies.

                        Re: Bios

Then you need to go into the Advanced BIOS page and then into Hard Disk Boot Priority and move your hard drive by name to the top of the list

                          Re: Bios

Problem fixed. At the time I was unaware of the firmware problem in seagate barracuda 7200.11 HDDs. The problem was resolved by unbricking the HDD and I was able to finally able to boot from it's OS.
